Tell us about your game today...
First topic message reminder :
As a junior in the early 80s, I shot a nett 56 (a +4 or 5 round I think) and a 58 in the same Summer. I didn't cheat, but I did get cut a lot that year.McLaren wrote:Ben
I am not doubting jas and believe him that the guy handed in a score for 51 points. I am just astonished by 51 points, as I said this is a score that I have never seen before. This is more about acknowledging the rarity of this event.
We are talking rarer than a hole in one, this guy has shot a nett score that only a handful people will ever have shot.
It just seems like others on here are not as blown away by a 20 handicapper shooting +5 as I am.

Bought a Mizuno Fli Hi 4i to replace my 4i as I wasn't getting much more out of it than my 5i. What a difference, carry increase by about 10-15 yards and launch is so much higher.
Cannot recommend highly enough.

Played my first round on Saturday for a month or two - been working on my driving, and while its far from 260 yards and straight everytime...I managed a good strike and getting it in play every time, which is a major upgrade on the usual 2/3 lost off the tee.
Unfortunately, my iron play was horrendous...think I was standing with the ball too far foward, and then got in my own head. Got a bit better as the round progressed but need to work on finding a comfortable swing with the irons to complement my driving one.

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Just realised I never got round to posting about my Hunstanton trip. First of all just what a course. One of those “old school” places with a traditional and understated clubhouse. On the board just inside the entrance is “Hunstanton welcomes….(and the list of visitors for that day). Pro shop was decent and friendly and ample practice facilities as well.
To the round… the early mist/fog had just about lifted to driver distance by the time I teed off so ideal really, not much wind. The layout is broadly out and back, heading North east out and coming back roughly southwest, obviously on each 9 there are a couple of holes that buck that trend. There’s a central higher dune ridge that runs out with the front 9 broadly to the east of it and the inward 9 to the west. 6&7 mount it, and coming home 12,13&14 cross it with 14 being a completely blind par 3 ( a la the 5th at Prestwick)
I actually started out quite well hitting the middle of the fairway on each of the first 3 holes and GIR’d the first 4. Lapse of concentration on 5 got me into trouble then 6, what a hole, a short par 4 in some ways reminiscent of the First on the Kings at Gleneagles, strikingly elevated green with a wicked back to front slope. That’s where the similarity ends though because this green is much smaller and much more penal if you miss it (yes I missed it long right needing a hideously difficult chip and did well to 3putt) A member in the clubhouse afterwards said it was not uncommon to see 9s & 10s recorded in medals on that hole. 7 is a great par 3 nestled near the top of the dune line. Managed to steady the ship after that and really enjoyed the back 9. The 12-14 stretch was enjoyable, 15 is a nice par 5 (I guess an easy birdie hole for those that can fly the bunkers on the fairway kink. 16 famous for the 3 holes in one in a row is the last bit of respite before the left to right cambered brute that is 17 another awesome hole, then 18 back to the clubhouse, again it’s a raised green, a decent drive should leave a wedge which you don’t want to mess up with the clubhouse watching (I did) - went up a club then took too much off it, landed nicely on front only to spin back and right off the putting surface, made a good up and down though to cap a very enjoyable day.
At £150 not a cheap day out BUT Northwest Norfolk is thankfully quite far off the well trodden golf tourist honeypots. Were Hunstanton in Lancashire or Kent I’d take a stab that it would a) be higher up the rankings and b) be circa £250 a pop and c) be visitor full months in advance. But it’s not and I’m glad it’s not. A bit like Silloth in that regard or even Burnham & Berrow. All top notch but because of their relative remoteness still reasonably priced compared to their tourist honeypot peers.

Sounds like a ball position issue.

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Aye that pesky ball position is a real issue with 4 out of my last 5 card carrying rounds being counters and ending the season as low as I’ve been this year (albeit still some distance from where I think I could/should be). A plugged lie in a bunker costing me a W at the weekend. Countback can be a right arse sometimes!! I suppose it wasn’t the bunker trouble that cost me, must have been a ball position somewhere else on the course because obviously I don’t pay enough attention to that kind of stuff.

Will be putting Hunstanton on my list for next summer JAS - as a norfolk native I have not played it, but sounds great! There are some lovely clubs and courses in that part of the world.
