QF1 - Match Thread - England v Australia - 19/10/19 - K/O 08:15 BST
First topic message reminder :
Thought I'd get these made nice and early for a few reasons - but one being that we're already now looking ahead to the QFs with several teams having finished their group stage, so it's all heating up for the proper knockout stuff...barring any more disruption.
England
Team: Daly; Watson, Slade, Tuilagi, May; Farrell (capt), Youngs; M Vunipola, George, Sinckler; Itoje, Lawes; Curry, Underhill, B Vunipola.
Replacements: Cowan-Dickie, Marler, Cole, Kruis, Ludlam, Heinz, Ford, Joseph.
Australia
Team: Beale; Hodge, Petaia, Kerevi, Koroibete; Lealiifano, Genia; Alaalatoa, Latu, Sio; Arnold, Rodda; Naisarani, Hooper (c), Pocock.
Replacements: Uelese, Slipper, Tupou, Coleman, Salakaia-Loto, White, To'omua, O'Connor.
Venue: Oita
Referee: Jerome Garces

Excellent performance and win by England, top drawer.
England firmly favourites for the RWC in my eyes, very few weakness' in their team.
Enjoy England fans

Give me the Aussies over 14 Argentinians any day. What a win!

That was easy.
Not sure it was “easy” the scoreboard shows a comfortable win, the Aussies put plenty of pressure with ball in hand, their coach just had no clue how to manage risk.

Australia are a bit like Scotland, a bit all over the place and over reliant on running and trying to score from everywhere. They need to mix it up a bit more.

England's defence on the try-line was also excellent ...

Well done England.... extra weeks rest helped, not sure you would have been so in control if you had to play the same number of games as the rest of us.

Enjoyed some of the tackles as much as the tries. Great defence.

Ended up easy but there were moments... That huge defensive push when the Aussies had about nine phases within five yards of the line midway through the second half was a massive moment. (I think England would likely have won even if the Aussies had scored then ; but it might have been a bit nervy for a few minutes !)
Think Eddie should be happy with that

Jonny May is an injury doubt for the semi-final (hamstring?). How much of a blow would that be for England if May missed the semi-final?

Beale, Beale, Beale. Sometimes he plays like he believes he has a cloaking device and nobody will see him. It's too late now of course, but Beale, they see you.
Anyway, Australia can begin their recovery now with a new coach that might help some pretty good players with the inclusion of a strategic kicking game.

Yes, the Aussies pushed hard at times but England managed those passages well.

Agree with Eddie Jones that England haven’t shown their best yet.
It was good today, not great, but England are in excellent condition to make it a ‘great’ one next Saturday.

We looked a lot like Saracens. Massive defence, great kicking and clinically accumulated points. (Oh and some cynical penalties to conced 3 pts rather than 7)
Aussies ran themselves into the ground.

Would be a huge blow. Hopefully he can make a fast recovery...don't think they can cover him without losing something. Tackling the ABs (I'm assuming ) they need the A team....

From the BBC live reporting
10:14 Injury to Jonny May?
ugo monye ( @ugomonye): A complete performance from England but didn’t like the way Jonny May pulled up trying to cover back then... ice on his hamstring #ENGvAUS #RWC2019 10:06 - 19 Oct 2019
Jonny May will be the headline on the medical bulletin. The England wing looked to twinge something in the final play...

That is a blow. May is class. Nowell if hes fit. Would be a huge ask for cokanasiga but hes not a guy who seems short on confidence.

Some one help me out here please.
Who do England play in the semi final? Is it the winner of New Zealand v Ireland?
Or is it the winner of Wales v France?

Well played England although Australia handed them 2 tries on a plate. Australia played really well for the first 13 minutes and then reverted to type with too many individual errors. Haylett-Petty would have been the better choice when England were always going to kick well to the Aussie fullback.

Thought Watson had a great game. Not so much Daly who doesn't look comfortable at fb.
Would be happy with, Nowell, Watson, Cokanasiga back 3 or Daly onwing fir Cokanasiga.
Assumming May is injured ofcourse.
Obviously the forwards win or atleast offer the chance win matches.

There’s been nothing else reported about May, so I’m hoping it’s a precautionary thing for a minor twinge rather than full on tear. Nowell would be a capable replacement though.

Just seen from EJ that May ‘should be fine’. Was just a twinge.

Actually yes. I cant be unhappy. We generally dealt with their all running game quite well and put the screw in at the end with ford.

Assuming this is a grade 1 injury the prognosis is a "few days" to recover. Given the semi-final is in 7 days time there isn't much margin for error.valenciasportsmedicine wrote:Grade 1 Hamstring Injury Recovery Time: The lightest injury, usually only a muscle pull or strain. Recovery typically only takes a few days.
Grade 2 Hamstring Injury Recovery Time: This grade includes partial muscle tears. You’ll likely need to take a couple of weeks off from training while it recovers.
Grade 3 Hamstring Injury Recovery Time: A complete muscle tear. This is the most severe degree of hamstring injuries and usually requires several months to heal.

Yes, but are any of the new guys remotely as complete a player as Curry is right now? He does everything and looks better every game, especially now hes filled out a bit more.
