Fair play to Starmer too, the kind of statement that Corbyn should have been making instead of the endless excuses.

Absolutely the right move by Starmer but I fear this is going to cause an unhealable rift in the opposition. Great bit of news for the Tories.

Corbyn threw out more anti Semites than any other leader.

The EHRC was a damp squib.

This decision is just a way for the Labour right to get rid of the left to cement its grip on the Party.

Shame many on here don't understand politics.

Smearing People with anti Semitism has been going on for years.

Do I like Corbyn...No too left. But I won't be voting for a Party that pulls this garbage.

The Campaign Against Anti-Semitism has submitted new complaints against 14 other Labour MPs: Diane Abbott, Tahir Ali, Mike Amesbury, Rebecca Long-Bailey, Apsana Begum, Richard Burgon, Barry Gardiner, Kate Hollern, Afzal Khan, Angela Rayner, Steve Reed, Lloyd Russell-Moyle, Barry Sheerman, and Zarah Sultana.

Few surprises in that list, were Starmer to rip the party apart and suspend all those implicated it would be a massive step towards being the next PM.

Good on Labour for conducting a full and thorough investigation. Maybe the Tories could conduct one of their own into Islamaphobia, rather than the toothless whitewash that we got.

Jennie Formby Labour GS under Corbyn...:"When I took over there wasn't even a process to suspend people for Anti Setimitism, the first thing we did was process the backlog of complaints that were ignored under the last administration as well as setting up proper grievance procedures"

NEC elections soon for Labour and too many lefties still in the membership for whoever is pulling Starmer's strings.

He wouldn't have had the rocks to suspend Corbyn.

Sad Sad day....Labour will try to become the Democrat Party again and what a mess that party is for the blue collar American.

Corbyn was suspended for his reaction to the report. If he'd kept his "why always me?" mouth shut, then it probably wouldn't have happened.

So for the first 2.5 years Corbyn was leader he didn't set up any proper grievance procedures or set up anything to process the complaints.

Yes, rather good on Labour for having an independent inquiry conducted fully and honestly. The point about the Tories and Islamaphobia stands, by the way. That was a whitewash. Literally.

Labour had no option, the EHRC were investigating them based on submissions from the JLM, they did not initiate the inquiry. The same body have decided not to investigate the Conservatives* at the present time so you're wrong on all fronts as per usual. It's odd because I know how much you hate whataboutery and it demeans both issues by treating them as so.

* that is not to say the party doesn't have a problem with Islamaphobia but what that has to do with anti-semitism within Labour only blessed Pr4wn will know.

This on twitter

Ian Dunt wrote:Incredible comment from Starmer just now on R4. He'd told Corbyn about his speech the evening before he made it. So Corbyn issued his statement knowing it would directly contradict Starmer's.

I know there were some good, fair ideas amongst the rubbish but Corbyn was just dreadful. The sooner the cult follows him into oblivion the better for UK politics

Who to listen to someone looking on from the outside like Michael Rosen or someone subjected to said harassment in Margaret Hodge?

His own views are not that relevant here. He allowed a dangerous culture to flourish over the years under his leadership. Compare and contrast with the progress Starmer has made after only a few months in charge

So Corbyn can defend his own reputation but Starmer can't take action so as to protect the reputation of the party?

I don't know where you've got this notion from that Starmer is part of the right of Labour (Cooper and Benn) because he's not, he's part of the soft left just like Ed Milliband.

So was Starmer supposed to hold back the report? Or not show contrition?

What do the polls think happens when on a day when the leader has to address an independent report being published that says anti semitism reports were mishandled and interfered with, the ex leader says it was political motivated?

I'm quite surprised Trussman is so pro-Corbyn to be fair. Never known a Yank to be in favour of a man with such anti-Western views. I'm actually on your side a bit here though Truss.

I find it amazing that people within Labour dislike a left wing politician for being too left wing for a left wing party. Starmer will be Blair mark 2. And eh...look where that got them last time.

Were you a fan of Kinnock by the way Truss? He was a bit before my time to be honest

Yeah you got a point I guess. Problem is (for Labour) it is hard to see when another Labour leader will be UK PM. The long term effects of Blair may linger on

I quote:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labour_Party_(UK)

"The Labour Party was founded in 1900, having grown out of the trade union movement and socialist parties of the 19th century. It overtook the Liberal Party to become the main opposition to the Conservative Party in the early 1920s".

So in short...Labour was formed on hard left views and became the main opposition when Marxism was on a major world changing rise. If you want centrist politics then go vote Liberal

Yougov..

Starmer approval rating..

Oct 22/23.....Minus 11
Oct 29/30.....Minus 23

This fake Anti Semitism witch hunt designed to show him as a strong leader seems to be a needless excursion.

The public perhaps seeing 0.3% of the Labour membership being accused of Anti Semitism as not a Party rife with Jewish hate.

Political opportunism rarely ends well long term...This isn't going well short term.

After going 5 points ahead as well...Not very smart for such an esteemed barrister.

That's the approval rating of the Labour party not for Starmer which has dropped from +5 to -2 but his decision has overwhelming backing overall. The drop in favourability comes from those on the left of the party who will be voting for them come what may. If you're going to post polls all the time at least read them properly.

For those interested, here's the full breakdown;

Well according to the same poll, Starmer's decision is backed 58-13% by the public.

There’s never been a left wing leader of the Labour Party who has become PM. All of them would be considered as centrist. Britain is a centrist country.

That is exactly the kind of problem Labour have had with this issue, and potentially dangerous language. Anyway it was an external investigation. Starmer may have some influence but essentially he's still reacting to events not driving them. The events are working for him in that they have provided an opportunity to purge the party of a few nutters, but Corbyn could also have avoided all of this, made it not about him.

Corbyn seems determined to choose the path of martyrdom over the health of the party.

Moving on...

Wonder if Johnson is setting the Country up for an eventual herd immunity with another Month lockdown.. People are desperate for some kind of normality and may eventually think Russian roulette with the stack decked in the favour of the player is worth it.

Always suspected the Tories wanted Herd immunity all along.

If Johnson really was serious Schools would be closing as Labour leader Andy Burnham wrote yesterday.
