surrey vs essex twenty/20
19 year old Zafar Ansari is the surprise inclusion in the Surrey Lions squad for the Friends Life t20 game against the Essex Eagles on Monday.
The fourteen selected by Chris Adams otherwise remain unchanged from the recent fixtures against Glamorgan Dragons and Gloucestershire Gladiators.
The full Surrey Lions squad to face the Essex Eagles at the Kia Oval on Monday June 13th is:
Rory Hamilton-Brown (Captain)
Steven Davies (Wicket Keeper)
Jason Roy
Zander De Bruyn
Tom Maynard
Matthew Spriegel
Gary Wilson
Chris Schofield
Gareth Batty
Zafar Ansari
Tim Linley
Jade Dernbach
Dirk Nannes
Yasir Arafat
does any one think ansari will get a start?

JimBob - thanks once more for starting a match thread.
I'll stick my neck out and say that Ansari will play. I think he'll replace Schofield with Wilson coming in for Pietersen.
I would also like Viscount to replace Arafat but doubt that he will. Spriegel also to again miss out.

i think that essex will win with relative ease, because we are a very good limited overs side.

Re: surrey vs essex twenty/20
JimBob - I've never seen Ansari play so what I'll tell you is based on reports or the usual Guildford flannel!
He's a left arm slowie who can also bat a bit. Until now he's not been available this summer as he's been at Cambridge University. He's certainly thought of highly at the Oval. Adams said at the AGM, just before the season started, that his absence for the first two months was ''unfortunate''and raised a smile by adding that ''unusually for a cricketer he's intelligent!''.
He did well the other month when he played for the Cambridge students against us in a three day game (although it was officially deemed a first class fixture, we largely put out a second XI led by Kevin Pietersen). In our first innings Ansari got a fivefer including Pietersen. He then opened the batting and made 41. Bizarrely, he was absent on the final day when the students won by ten wickets as he had to go off on a Geography field course!
I believe he played just one CB 40 game for us last season and took a wicket with his first ball.
The above doesn't mean he'll play tomorrow but I think it gives him a fair chance, particularly as Schofield and Spriegel have been struggling in t20.
That's about it - apart from him needing a haircut going by recent photos!

JimBob - I meant to add that I'm a bit worried for Tom Lancefield. He's only on a one year contract which expires at the end of this season. At the moment he's not pulling up trees in the seconds and seems a long way off the firsts ....

Re: surrey vs essex twenty/20
The Cambridge cricket web site gives stats for players. Also shows that Ansari took 6 for 64 against Oxford University in 1931 - which seems a bit improbable...
From what I can see he had an excellent start to the season with the bat which has tailed off in recent games. Bowling - has taken a number of wickets. He might play in the upcoming game, but if we lose I can see him getting a few games as Adams might well try out a few young players in competition once we are out of contention.
Looks like Ansari might have a bit of a magic arm. As well as taking a wicket with his first ball for Surrey - I see that he also won a match for Cambridge against Loughborough this season with the last scheduled ball of the match after the last pair at the wicket had resisted for the last hour.
Like Guildford I am wondering about Lancefield's future with Surrey, given he's only on 1 year contract.

Re: surrey vs essex twenty/20
Live on Sky tomorrow, hopefully the team can show a massive improvement from yesterday. I am pretty confident about our batting at home, we did well in the first match and didn't get a chance in the second. Away games may be a different story though. Not sure on the team, definitely need 6 batsmen though so Wilson will probably play.

Re: surrey vs essex twenty/20
If I were deciding:
1. RHB
2. Davies
3. Roy
4. De Bruyn
5. Maynard
6. Wilson
7. Ansari / Spriegel
8. Batty
9. Arafat
10. Dernbach
11. Nannes
Like most of us I don't know enough of Ansari too make the call for his inclusion with any authority. One thing I am sure of is that we need a batsmen/ batting all-rounder at number 7 to give us some depth.
Schofield misses out of my team as his bowling has been a bit poor of late, although his ability to give the ball a whack may be missed. Linley doesn't make my cut as he always seems to be against Arafat, and we all know who will be chosen out of those two... (plus Arafat did bowl well last match).
Looking forward to some TV coverage (finally!), and hope we put on a good show. In the match against Essex last year at Chelmsford we were brutalised by some great batting from Scott Styris, who I see Essex have re-signed this year. ten Doeschate, Shah and Bopara alongside Styris make Essex a dangerous batting side.
Should be a good 'un.

I'd go for the same side as Tibor and I'd go Arafat ahead of Linley because at Linley's pace, the batsmen can just slog him.

Re: surrey vs essex twenty/20
jbd - I would agree but Arafat seems to get slogged regardless and Linley did well in his last T20 game. Seems to have developed very good control this season. Our batsmen NEED to come to the party tonight because I have no doubts that Essex will get a big big score against our bowling.
cricketfan - you seem very confident, hopefully that confidence is misplaced

Re: surrey vs essex twenty/20
I have just read that Ansari was in good form with the bat on Saturday. He carried his bat for an undefeated 123 and ensured a draw for Weybridge as they finished on 192 -9 in their Ryman League match against Reigate Priory who had scored a mighty 281 - 4. No other Weybridge batsman got past 25.
In contrast to Ansari, Tom Lancefield's wretched luck and form continues. He was out for just eleven playing for Banstead as they crashed to Normandy for whom 'Clive' Dunn was amongst the wickets.
There could be a variety of reasons but Lancefield along with Simon King has not been selected for today's second eleven Trophy match against Sussex at Horsham. Hmmm ....

Does anyone know when Meaker will be back as with his pace (and this season's improved control), he could be hard to get away in T20?

Re: surrey vs essex twenty/20
jbd - all info second hand but someone mentioned recently on the wallpaper site ('Oval World') that Meaker was being rested with the next CC game in mind (starts this Sunday against Gloucs) and was doing a spot of coaching at a local school in the meantime.
Clearly agree with you about Meaker's pace and improved control.
Going back to your earlier comments about Arafat and Linley: in the first t20 match against Gloucs that I went to, Linley was almost certainly quicker than Arafat who appeared to be only bowling at three-quarter pace. It was very odd. Hopefully, he was carrying a minor injury which is now behind him. We'll probably see tonight.
I do think Adams is displaying too much loyalty to Arafat whilst not rewarding Viscount enough. [Cue a fivefer for our overseas signing!]

Guildford
That's concerning about Arafat, but like you say hopefully it was just a niggle. I think it's about time he was dropped from the CC side as the seamers I'd rather were playing include:
Tremlett
Dermbach
Meaker
Linley
Dunn
and probably also Jordan and Jewell as they haven't done much worse and they are younger and have more future

Not looking good to say the least.

Just switched in.... 154 - 7 not good; but an outside chance that Essex may implode. Very promising start by Ansari, Dismal from Wilson - is it my imagination but him getting out for zero seems to be the norm; and Spriegel again scores at less than a run a ball.
Will give some thought to the limericks - but whether they will be publishable remains to be seen....

Ansari - 4 overs for 24 and scored 30 not out off 18 balls - doubt that either Batty or Schofield would have done better than that.

First ball duck has rather set back Napier's England claims! Hope Boycs is not too upset! But run rate needed is still only 11 so eggs remain uncounted.
