First topic message reminder :
Do you think so? It's certainly a great sport to play, but it's pretty boring to watch. 75% of the game is irrelevant. It only becomes slightly interesting in the last quarter when the match is won and lost. I thinks that's the problem with American sport. They concentrate so much on there being frequent scoring, that it becomes routine and lacks excitement when they do score.
I prefer moments of brilliance in sports rather than just constant routine points.

Lowry has done very well to say the least in view of the stick he gets.Good lad

Especially when you contrast that in Scotland at least, you can't buy alcohol at football but you can at the rugby and there's still no trouble. Very civilised.

Indeed.
Speaking of having a few beers, how’s your training going? Weren’t you going for a spring marathon?

Yup, doing London again. Training going great, but could well get stymied by the hysterical reaction to Coronavirus.

super,
Did you have to enter the lottery for London or do you somehow qualify by some other means, whether via elite status, qualifying races, etc?
Interested because my lad and his lady have been trying to get in to Berlin, London & Tokyo (I know, "trophy" races) without success.

Kwini, I've got a qualification time after last year, but last year beat the odds to get a ballot place. I'd failed in that ballot 17 years in a row. Best bet is to be a member of a UK running club and get one of their allocated spaces, run for a charity ( minimum amount required) or run a qualification time in a minor, but easier to get into marathon (none of which I'd bothered to do, but that would have helped me out)

Odds for London are awful now Kwini, I’ve got in once (2014) since 2009. Did a Golden Bond place for the BHF in 2008. With a GB you have to pledge to raise a certain amount. I don’t think the charities are interested in anything less than 2 grand these days. I pledged to raise £1500 in 2008 and managed £1850 in the end. The Friday before the race my total was only about £700 which was stress I didn’t need (you have to make up any shortfall in the fundraising to the pledged amount)

I can see London being canned this year Super, lots of heavy breathing bodies from all over the world crammed together?? A veritable 5 star resort for virus spread :-/ not only that, at the end of the race runners are (temporarily at least) just a bit immuno compromised. It would be a great shame to see it cancelled but I’d say it’s about 70/30 whether it will or not. 70% it will be cancelled.

I think so too Jas, if it does I've not really lost anything, just gained more fitness and a return ticket to London.
The silver lining might be that the amount of charity money raised might negate any prospect of cancellation and also that current advice is that there's no need to cancel mass events.
Cheltenham is not affected, so hoping London won't be.

True, however I reckon we are about 10-14 days behind Italy and if (big IF) we follow anything like a similar curve I think the advice will change.
My partner is doing the Bath half on Sunday, kind of hoping it was going to get binned (she’s not ready), I’ve suggested she really shouldn’t run but she’s not listening.
So what was your time that would qualify as a good for age time? I’m now looking at that as probably my best shot at another London. I’m 57 in a couple of weeks so id need to find a 3:20 in a lesser race at the moment, however in 3 years time the bar drops to 3:45. I was good for age in my 20s (2:51) and never capitalised on it but I do have that inner belief that with enough dedication I can get back to good for age for my current age.

2:51 is amazing JAS. Real distinguished standard, probably the equivalent of +4 golfer.
Qualifying time for me was sub 3:05, they then reduced this by 2.5 mins for each group.

super, JAS,
Thanks, Pretty much what I thought Seems true for Berlin & Tokyo also. Boston is virtually impossible but Chicago seems accessible.
They qualified for NYC (which was the best "community" event I've attended in the US) by joining NY Road Runners and running qualifying events, sort of a two-year rotation unless one secures an elite time. Which they didn't . . . . . .

It will. Personally, I'm amazed Cheltenham is proceeding. R0 for SARS-v2/Covid-19 is ~2.2 I think i.e. evidence suggests it's more infectious than influenza and has higher mortality. We know nothing, for example, about its effects (if any) on unborn foetuses - see Zika.JAS wrote:super_realist wrote:I think so too Jas, if it does I've not really lost anything, just gained more fitness and a return ticket to London.

Navy, I could be wrong but 2.3 is in the range of R0's for influenza.

That's the rate in China, not necessarily true for anywhere else
In the UK just 6 out of 373 have died, which is 1.6% death rate so far, and all had underlying health issues.

I feel bad for questioning a woman's account of assault but it seems pretty unlikely that Salmond would have the agility to "pounce" on anything.

I’m pretty astounded that a guy in that sort of shape has any libido, even an attempted pounce looks beyond him. The mind just boggles. If he was that uncontrolled d’ya think he’s had any attempted pops at Nicola and been rebuffed?

R0 = 2.3 is the best info we have. Even a death rate of 1.6% is higher than that for influenza, which is typically <0.1-0.2%.super_realist wrote:McLaren wrote:Navy, I could be wrong but 2.3 is in the range of R0's for influenza.

Depends how you define over populated. Can we feed the current population to sufficient standards using our currently available resources? Doesn't appear so.
We have more people than can be taken care of adequately. I'd call that over population.

Fair comment. I disagree though. We have more than enough food as things stand and/or more than enough existing ability to raise those struggling. Existing population doesn't seem to feel that's a winner though. Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
For your information, I used to live in the Braids. I must have played Braids 1 more times than you've had hot dinners and Braids 2, as it was, even more. We used to "jump on" to Braids 2 every day after school, play a few holes, then practice our chipping after the parkie had closed the course.
My house backed onto Mortonhall and had friends who were members there so I have played that lots of times as well.
Braids 1 was a very good course particularly for a novice which IMO had 17 decent holes, some very good, and a poor 18th. But Mortonhall was better.

I’m sure you’ve been on a bus a few times in your life.
Of course I've been on a bus, but most civilised people once they reach Mac's age have their own transport.
Mac was inferring I grew up in a poor area, when it is in fact the case that all the evidence suggests it is Mac who is the peasant.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
Here is my hole by hole head to head matchplay between braids and mortonhall.
1. AS
2. MH 1up (silly uphill wedge par 3 on merchants)
3. AS (crap par 3 for MH, relatively interesting short par 4 for braids)
4. BH 1 Up (ok par 5 at mortonhall, nice short par 4 for Merchants)
5. BH 2up (boring short par 4 at MH, iron off tee round the dog leg then boring wedge)
6. BH 2up
7. BH 1up (silly hole at the braids just no where to really play a strategic drive, almost hit and hope)
8. BH 2up (at least the green is interesting at the braids 8th. Although neither are great holes)
9. BH 2up (two strong holes. Interesting short par 4 on MH and challenging par 3 with interesting green at BH)
10. BH 3up (very simple wedge par 3 at MH while merchants has decent par 5)
11. BH 3up
12. BH 2up (there is just something fun about the elevated tee shot on MH 12th, BH has crappy uphill short par 4)
13. BH 2up (really good par 3 at BH which can be a wood in the wind but green site of MH 13th makes it a draw)
14. BH 3up (really boring par 4 at MH, while BH has a double fairway (sort of) with drive from the top of the hill between a cliff face)
15. BH 3up (both have nothing par 4's)
16. BH 3up (the tee shot at MH doesn't offer too much but I like its small undulating green. BH offers fun drive through the valley and due to the contours some interesting landing spots for the approach shot)
17 BH 4up (par 3 over water (which shouldn't really come into play) at MH vs par 3 over massive dip/valley at BH. The greater and more interesting recovery options give this to BH, plus on non GCA grounds the backdrop of the city on BH is awesome)
18 BH 3up (MH's 18th would have to be pretty bad to lose the last. I rarely bothered to play the 18th at BH unless it was a counting card)
So 3 up to the Braids based on hole vs hole but the setting of the braids should really earn it a couple of extra points.

I've not seen it, but from what I've read, we have a budget taking on board labour's policies on spending to benefit the country.
