First topic message reminder :
How have some individuals got to the point where all they do is whinge and moan and complain about other people without any sense of compassion for those less well off than themselves through no fault of their own?

I think that's reasonable but I don't think anyone goes out of their way or feels less grief because some entitled hypocritical brat and generally unpleasant person has suffered the same.
Maybe, just maybe people have different views to you (and me) on sone things. I know its shocking to think.
It's called an opinion. I know you wish to impose your views on others and get a bit soft when anyone disagrees.

Exactly. I think realist struggles to grasp that others have different opinions to him.
Not at all, I was asked my opinion and I gave it, I'm just not buying the explanation from those who claim "that they care" is actually caring or whether it's just lip service. Just stating you realise that something " is sad" doesn't demonstrate to me they actually care, it just represents that you can recognise something unpleasant, doesn't mean you genuinely care about it.
Loads of things are sad, and they're easy to recognise, bit noting that doesn't mean you actually give a flying f**k.

Would that not be a misogynistic comment? I know how much you hate such things, strange that you'd then lower yourself to such a level.

I don't even think Mac believes some of the right on things he says, a bit like yourself he probably does it to instigate discussion. Nothing wrong with that. We wouldn't have a board without a few differing views.

I've said it on numerous occasions, dont take everything I say as seriously as it might seem. While I am a Labour voting, council worker with 2 kids, I also don't take myself remotely serious or even have the time to actually care about some things I may defend.

Convenient. What too many don't grasp is that one can't jump up and down about inappropriate language in one area, but then ignore similar in others.beninho wrote:Like everything in life, my view is context is key.

That volley was good. However, Best or Pelé it is then. Or perhaps Eusebio? Puskas? They excelled when people were chopping at their legs orders of magnitude worse than for Zidane. Nah. Not by me anyway. The fact that he never really acknowledged what he did was a pity. He was a sportsman - anyone who sees them as role models is likely to be disappointed. I just enjoyed watching him play football - awesome.westisbest wrote:That’s the thing with Maradona. Unfortunately he will be remembered mostly by some people as ‘the hand of god’.

For sheer goal scoring skill you can't go wrong with a compilation of Le Tissiers goals. If any of those had been Ronaldo, Messi or Zidane people would still be having a Barclays Bank about them now.

A bit before my time so would be amiss of me to comment on them, should have specified that I meant during my lifetime.
1. Zidane
2. Ronaldinho

Why are you so sensitive to non PC language being called out?
What words or phrases would you like to see come back into popular use that have currently fallen out of favour due to the advancement of political correctness?

Always thought Best was massively over rated and putting him alongside Maradona and Pele was like putting Murray alongside Federer and Djokovic. Only played a very short time at the top, never played in a World Cup. If he wasn't from these Isles I doubt we'd ever mention him.

George Best was only various times voted as one of the greatest of all time. There's a tendency of the obverse actually where players from the UK are assumed to not be as good as their overseas contemporaries.
470 games for Manchester United doesn't suggest a short time at the top.

9 years at United and 10 playing for utter excrement. If you're that good, why is more than half your career spent with teams that barely anyone has ever heard of?
I'm not sure how anyone who has never even played at a major finals could ever be considered a great. Imagine never going to the Olympics and being considered a great athlete. He didn't really win that much either. One European Cup and two leagues. Big deal, even a cart horse like John Terry has done that.
No doubt he was a fine player, but he pissed half his career up against a wall.

You're concentrating on the wrong bit there, either your knowledge is lacking or you're being deliberately obtuse.
I don't think you can ignore a players greatness because his national team wasn't much cop, what an odd comparison.

We are talking on a day that Maradona has died, a guy who pretty much singlehandedly won the World Cup in 1986, and Best couldn't even get the paddies to a tournament.
Like I said, he was a good player but I think he's a good few rungs below the very best, regardless of what some parochial magazine ranks him or what a few leading questions resulted in a gushing quote say about him. I don't think that's being too harsh on him.
Pele and Maradona did things that Best didn't even get close to which is what separated him from truly great players.
I'm not even sure I believe half of those quotes, Maradona for example grew up a peasant in a Buenos Aires slum so not only wouldn't he have had a TV, I doubt English football was ever broadcast there in the first place at that time for him to have ever seen Best play.

No,, Why do you persist in such deliberate misrepresentation? I said I don't think he could be considered to be at the level of Maradona and Pele because he never played in a major tournament. I didn't say he had to win it but he only ever played in England and in Europe. Could you consider an athlete one of the greatest if they never got to the Olympics? Would you ever claim an athlete who only ever performed at the European Championships as being one of the best of all time? Come on.
This sounds like another example of where I'm not permitted an opinion because it differs from yours.
I said I thought he was a good player, but I think he was a few rungs below the very best. Is that really that bad to say?

Maradona was an icon. He had passion and was larger than life. Winning the world cup singlehandedly - and scoring both the most famous and the best goal in world cup history - will forever secure him legendary status.

No it isn't. The European Championship and World Cup are ranked far higher. Funny how people are saying that you shouldn't care about him not playing in the World Cup, but we should care about him playing in the European Cup. How big was the European Cup in 1968 anyway? Not that big considering a team of hackers from Glasgow won it the year before.
If a golfer didn't play in any Majors would you rate them? . You have to take something away from best for never having played on the international stage at a tournament.
Like I've said three times now, he was a fine player, bet he's a good bit below the very best.

It has been since the mid 60's. The world cup is great to win but in no way defines greatness.

When Cruyf defines you as a great, its good enough for me. Cruyf was also a great, probably the greatest in terms of his influence as a coach as well as player.
Iniesta, there's another. He was brilliant. That Pep Barcelona team was the best team I'd ever seen.
Alfredo Di Stefano is also regarded as one of the greats, though he didn't appear in a world Cup.

Winning the European Cup by that definition doesn't define greatness either.
Paul Lambert, Basile Boli and Jimi Traore won the Champions League, does that make them great?
I would much rather have the career of Maradona, Pele, Ronaldo, Messi, Henry, Zidane, Cruyff, Van Basten, Raul, Beckham, Beckenbaur, Muller, Fat Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Buffon, Maldini, Del Piero, Iniesta, Mattheus etc than a drunk like Best who drank his career away.
Yes, he might have had a lot of skill, but his career wasn't that great and he didn't win very much. 442 rank him at 14. That sounds about right.
