Glasgow and Edinburgh Ongoing Banter Thread 26
First topic message reminder :
A continuation on previous threads discussing the past, the present and the future of Scottish rugby. A dose a day, keeps optimism away
Halfway through a Covid season and not far from the Rainbow cups, both teams are on the precipice of missing out on the top tier in Europe next year. The Rainbow Cup is a well thought out idea of including sides from South Africa, the home to a new Covid variant that vaccines may not work on, with international travel involving several regions of Europe.
Glasgow Squad
LH: Kebble, Bhatti, Lambert
Hooker: F Brown, Turner, Stewart, Matthews,
TH: Z Fagerson, Berghan, Pieretto, McCallum, McQuillan
Locks: Cummings, R Gray, Harley, McDonald, Bain, Bean
Back Row: Wilson, Gordon, M Fagerson, Darge, Dempsey, Miller, G Brown
SH: Price, G Horne, Dobie, Kennedy
FH: Weir, Miotti, P Horne, Thompson
Centres: S Johnson, McDowall, Tuipulotu, Grigg, Fergusson
Back Three: McLean, Forbes, McKay, Cancelliere, Tagive, Steyn, O Smith
Edinburgh Squad
LH: Schoeman, Venter, Grahamslaw
Hooker: McInally, Cherry, McBurney, Harrison
TH: Nel, De Bruin, Atalifo, Williams

Agree, Price has been sharp. A reminder of what Edinburgh miss with Pyrgos.
Big game from Brown so far as well. Silly penalty early on, but since then he's been very effective. Such a pity that injuries have prevented Brown and McInally competing for the Lions. Both good enough in my view.

These line out penalties are ridiculous, but at least the ref is consistently bad.
Great kick from Thompson. He's starting to annoy me.

Price causing all sorts of trouble around the rucks.
I think Gilco might have conceded about 10 pens today!! Hope he's OK.

Cole Forbes looks like a decent player, as you would expect from a U20 All Black
A lot of Glasgow players have stood up this evening, but he has been right up there

Great game, thoroughly enjoyed that. Well played Glasgow, you needed a big response and some of your boys really turned up tonight. Defence much better organised than Edinburgh’s. If Edinburgh had a functioning attack that could’ve ended up differently, but we really don’t and Glasgow deserved the win. Great derby battle

What a match!
ColecForbes is some find.
Seaman Steyn was everywhere.
Price was very good .
Thompson is going to be some player.
Jamie Hodgson was very effective for the Luvvies.
The one out run straight tactic made it easy for Glasgow. Bringing on Kunavula to give you another straight runner limited your options and made it easier still.
I thought Mata jumped into Cummings tackle and that's what caused the injury.
Hell of a Slaughter.

That was probably a game that Glasgow needed to win more than Edinburgh wanted to
Good to know that DW has not lost the dressing room and with some players coming back, there is some promise for next season.
I hope he rotates the team around a bit for next week and gives a few other players a chance. Was good to see players like McDowell back in the mix today and hopefully DW will trust his squad a lot more next year once he has seen a lot more of them in action.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading all the comments from you guys watching the game this morning.
I did call t that Glasgow would have a big reaction - there was only going to be one winner.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh Ongoing Banter Thread 26
Just watched the game - a really entertaining derby. Glasgow really brought it with their defence and Edinburgh made it easy for them with some basic and uninspiring attack.
Does Cockers really not see how bad our attack is? One out passes against am organised defence doesn't work. Worth saying Chamberlain made a number of bad decisions of who to give the ball to - he was playing by numbers and not what was in front of him. I could understand these tactics in the early days of Cockers as coach to keep things simple, but our attack is the worst in the league. We can't just rely on rolling mauls all the time, as good as they have been.
Thomson on the other hand had a very good game - his kicking is fantastic. I wonder if Glasgow would have signed 2 international 10s (who won't actually be away for internationals) of they'd known how quickly Thomson would adapt to this level. I fear he's going to be living off scraps next season at a time when he needs games.
Not sure why Forbes was MOTM - he did fine but not a clear standout. Was great to see Steyn back and looking hungry.
On the captain's challenge - I think it's fine as a principle but there was so much time wasted due to the ref having to run to the side of the pitch to look at a tiny screen.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh Ongoing Banter Thread 26
The game definitely went on to long with the challenges and that needs looking at.
I would say though that the 2 RCs, with the 20 mins off, were a lot more justifiable. Both were a bit unfortunate and neither malicious and both had the potential to ruin the game.
Problem is, i do think some offences are still worthy of a permanent red and am not sure 2 levels of RC sanctions would work, as it would involve to much interpretation from the officials.
Am struggling to make up my mind on this one.

Yeah you're right Biggee that those two reds were probably only worthy of a 20 minute disadvantage. It's like they needed to be orange cards and the red card still means permanent sending off with no replacement.
I.e. Bennet's - not deliberate, Kebble low end of severity. Compare that against a deliberate shoulder charge or throwing a punch etc.

It's a little bit like asking, "What Brexit do you want then?" Everyone had a different concept in their head and no-one really agreed with anyone else. (back in the good old days of parliamentary democracy before we had a PM who circumvented those endless tiresome debates in Parliament by the cunning wheeze of shutting Parliament down and then saying "We've run out of time so vote for this version or get nothing.").
Yappy scrum half holds onto loosehead prop after the whistle to stop a quick penalty (you can see Aldi Price in front of Kebble screaming for the ball) and gets put on his arse. Most forwards would tell you that if a prop didn't deck the 9 in that situation it would be a fineable offence. Common sense would say a yellow at most. Or a Man Of The Match nomination. Or both. Definitely a yellow for Henners. And a second yellow for his Dying Swan routine.
was a red all day long. The TMO clearly said, "The tackle was illegal all the way." He was, in the legal jargon of rugby officialdom, Doing A Farrell. Allowing his teammate to make the tackle and then driving in with his shoulder at chest height but driving upwards after the initial contact. Anyone who does anything on a rugby field which in any way resembles Daddy's Boy's antics should receive a Straight Red and be sent to bed with no supper.
Thankfully Kebble was replaced by one half of Lambert and Butler who upset the Luvvies no end and Bennett was replaced by another 13 who was as superfluous as any other 13 Cockers has selected in the last decade. Rumour has it the Luvvies are having the number removed on the o/c jerseys next season and they'll just have the player's name on the back. Oh and they'll all be called Oblomov.
A cracker of a game though.

Lambert is definitely worth a mention and not just for the peroxide looks.
He was a bit of a star in the last U20s team that played and we had some hopes for him when he came to Glasgow but then did not see him all year.
It looks like they were holding him back, probably for some serious conditioning work, but he did not look out of place now. Some great carries and a lovely sleight take out of Ritchie, that he would have been quite happy to have done himself had the ball been at the other end, which resulted in our last try.
He looks like he is going to be a good player and a great addition to Glasgow and Scotland's LHs. with Keeble going to get some time out now, we will hopefully see him get a couple of starts over the next few games.

Given how often he went backwards he definitely got a good 'learning experience' from Nel!

I expect most 21 year old props in their second pro game would struggle with an old fox like Nelly. Lots of other stuff in his game to like and his scrummaging will no doubt improve.

Can’t agree there, utterly terrible concept designed to pander to people who can’t accept that officials making mistakes in sport is just part of reality. What goes against you one week will go in your favour next time round. Refereeing in rugby is hard enough without making the poor blokes have to suffer being publicly called out by the players they’re supposed to be respected by multiple times throughout the game.
Rant over. The 20 minute red I think I can actually get on board with, although I agree there are going to be bad offences where it doesn’t feel sufficient
