Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
First topic message reminder :
Ben Leicester have been fortunate to find wealthy owners who saved us from a deal of trouble but they could not be accused of throwing stupid money around and disregarding the fans. The PL winning team was assembled from a bunch of frees ,has beens and cheap buys I think Ulloa was the top buy at about £9m.What they then did as some players moved on for big money was start throwing some of that money about to try to maintain position with varying degrees of success. The Chairman gives away free beer and cakes on his birthday and has given a lot to local organisations including a childrens hospital ,We have been very very lucky.
I think the German teams have a different voting structure where fans have a big say.

I think being the 3rd best in the world at a certain event is a little better than being a 'journeyman'.

But you aren't the third best in the world just because its in the Olympics. You placed third on ONE day.
What is Bradshaws ranking for instance? Is she consistently ranked third? No, she isn't.
If you have the best gross in a competition at your club, it doesn't make you the best player at your club does it?

If you're only the best player at your club, you're less than a pro journeyman. Which I suppose is fine, as long as you don't celebrate it.

If you are an asylum seeker and you make do with a third rate country like Italy or Spain, instead of a gold standard nation like the UK are you a journeyman asylum seeker?

Ha ha ha, Why on earth would you call the UK a gold standard nation?
An Olympic Bronze medal means you won an Olympic Bronze medal, it doesn't make you the 3rd best in the world.

Which I suppose is fine if you're happy with winning a gold in a fairly niche sport.

Holly Bradshaw is 9th all time so fair to say she's pretty decent at the pole vault.

Wobetide someone has a different opinion to you.
Anyway, if you read back you'd know my question was why you'd never be happy to finish third in any other event than the Olympics.

Not really. But to suggest that you wouldn't be delighted with a bronze medal in a competition in which you had only an outside chance of winning is just nonsense. You can go on denyng that you're lying, but you're just deluding yourself for the sake of trying to continue a losing fight in a pointless argument.

I won a few pool tournaments as a teenager, wasn't for big money but enough for a few nights out and was pretty happy with myself, was under no illusions about being the best in the world. A question for you lesser SR, should I retrospectively not have been happy?

I'm sure you were happy with yourself, but I'm sure you weren't running around pretending you'd won the World Cup and I'm sure you certainly wouldn't if you came third in said competition.
It wasn't me who claimed coming third made you the third best in the world, it was Beninho.
The difference is YOU WON. Silver and Bronze isn't winning. Yes, you can be proud of coming third if it exceeded expectations, but I don't think it merits a lap of honour with a Union flag draped around your shoulders.

I don't know draping yourself with the Union flag might be a show of recognition to those watching that their support is appreciated, i'd most definitely be doing the same. Then again I don't just moan about things for the sake of it and do on occasion know when i'm being a tool.

Did you ever play at The Crown and Sceptre, Holland Rd near Olympia, Soul? It was quite a while back... around 1990?
Just thinking (if you were aka the Hammersmith Harrier) that I used to go to that pub often at lunchtime to play pool and darts with my English, American and Irish work colleagues. One day this young bloke challenged us to a game. Had a carrier case and wore a vest. Quite a professional appearance. Was that you? Think we politely passed and said that we had to get back to the office or something.

Hasn't that been done to death, and isn't it only a pure simpleton who doesn't just accept its all based on expectations.

I didn't bring it up Mac did and if its all about expectations why do they only wet their pants with third at the Olympics? Why aren't they doing the same at Diamond League meetings, European Championships etc?
Why didn't England wrap themselves in the flag and get a hard on about being runner up? They weren't expected to win.
Oh I forgot, doesn't apply to "knockouts" does it?
Who came third at The Open this year? Delighted were they? No.

Super Realist- do you think the diamond league is equal status to athletes and fans as the Olympics?
Do you think the England players didn't expect to win the Euro final?
Does 3rd place at the open win a medal?

Why does status matter, 2nd or 3rd isn't winning.
Of course England players didn't expect to win the final. They werent expected to win by anyone. So why weren't they delighted to be second? You said it was about expectation and if you told them they would come second, shouldn't they be delighted?
Oh right, I forgot, only applies to the Olympics doesn't it?

Of course the status of the event means sonething, not even you are going to argue it doesn't, are you? The Olympics is the pinnacle of the majority of sports.
Regarding the England players and the manager, I think most have said disappointed to have not won, but proud with what they achieved.

Did anyone see Roger Black on TV yesterday morning? In most Olympics he would have stood a decent chance of gold but he was saying that he was happy with silver, which wouldn’t necessarily always be the case but at those particular olympics he was up against a certain Michael Johnson at the top of his game so realistically, barring a DQ for a false start or running out of lane he knew the best he could do was silver. So there was an element of realism tacked into being the best you can be on a given day.

I quite liked the boxer who was well naffed off at his silver medal .He will probably put that in a cupboard and forget all about it.the flag thing I think they get told to do it lottery funding and all that the guys and girls who make it without the funding are top for me.
Talking pool my lad who has had his issues lets say went to the Ricoh at Coventry couple of years ago to watch British Masters snooker or something -in the lobby they had a pool tournament going for who could clear the table best time and he won it over the day in 52 seconds .The host said where did you learn to play pool like that -his answer was prison !

You don't go in expecting to win anything. That sets you up for a fall. You go in and aim to apply your game plan. You might be confident, as the most confident player usually wins, but you absolutely should not expect to win.
This is the sort of behaviour that results in being beaten by Iceland and is pretty much the same as being arrogant.
If you apply your plan and you win, you're vindicated, if you lose, your game plan was either wrong or the other team were better.
England were most certainly the underdogs in that final. If they went in expecting to win, that's a problem of arrogance and not giving your opponent the respect they deserve.
England certainly weren't appreciably better than Italy. So an expectation they were going to win is a terrible approach to a match against what was regarded a better team

If I was a football manager and before the biggest game for the country in 55 years, my players didn't believe they were going to win. I would be very concerned.
As a fan, if any player of a team I support don't cross the line with the mind-set of thinking they can win the game, again I would be very disappointed. I guess that would be the same for almost every football fan.

Expectation is the mother of failure.
You shouldn't think you are GOING to win you should be thinking you CAN win.
One of those promotes complacency and one promotes action.

I think Muir is a better athlete than Dina Asher Smith and operates at a consistently higher level, the trouble is she doesn't get as much credit as she should because she looks like a thumb/spoon.
Smith fits the media profile a bit better despite an awful smile.

Not even close. Believing you will win and believing you can win is two different things entirely.
I have no doubt that England thought they could win, but if they thiught they should win then that helps explain why they didn't.
Playing to win is not playing in the belief you will win.

I dont think England thought they should win. I didn't get any sense of complacency from the manager or players. And I wouldn't want my team to play thinking they should win. They should play with the belief they will win. I think England's players believed they would win, and that's what i would want from my team. Again, I would guess every fan would want that.
