JAS wrote:super_realist wrote:JAS wrote:super_realist wrote:Agree Jas, statisticians seem absolutely determined to make every death a Covid statistic. I had a very dear relative die at the weekend at a relatively young age for these days of just 68. If it had happened six months ago im sure they would have pressed for it being covid related instead of the cancer which sadly took him.
The same is true of the current reporting on covid cases. Yesterday there were reportedly 50,000 new covid "cases" , when in reality all it really amounts to is 50,000 positive results. It doesnt necessarily mean that 50,000 have any symptoms or are suffering in the slightest.
It really is time we stopped this obsession with it and moved on. Hospital admissions and deaths are miles within acceptable levels.
I’m not sure I’d go that far, I don’t think we’re out of the woods yet infact I think we’re going backwards at pace, mainly because complacency has set in. By all means keep things open but ffs give people the right messages and people need to step up, use their noggins and act responsibly as well, Covid will kill 1500 - 2000 a week over the winter, not as many as last winter but still needlessly and irresponsibly high. I can’t get a booster, it’s now over 6 months since my 2nd jab, 58 year old asthmatic with a compromised immune system due to a history of Crohns. I’ve had 2 texts from the surgery with a link to book a slot in a vaccination center and both times when I’ve gone to the link all the slots are already gone.
Youre blaming Mac for making up stats. Where did you pull your 1500-2000 a week from? Neil Ferguson?
It’s a fairly simple extrapolation, when daily new infections hovered around 30k deaths a couple of weeks later averaged around 150, daily infections are now nudging 50k and rising so it’s not a stretch to imagine that the daily death toll will go back up to around 250. So x 5 = 1250 then a lower level of weekend recorded deaths and youre up near 1500 a week. With infections rising and our freedom loving government happy to just ride the wave unrestricted (as it doesn’t seem to be affecting their popularity), the booster programme is significantly less urgent than the original roll out, with winter more people mix indoors, what makes you think numbers will be lower?
The vaccine has been great yes, it’s meant less people getting seriously ill by about a factor of 5 but the value of it has been way overstated which has led to complacency. Maybe it will burn itself out and run out of steam naturally. On the other hand what if a vaccine resistant variant emerges? If that happens we really are buggered senseless.
Ok so I’ll take a conservative guess that by end of March next year our death toll will be around 170000 assuming no restrictions are reintroduced and also assuming a vaccine resistant variant doesn’t emerge.
Go on then, what your estimate and the logic underpinning it?
Looks lile you aren't accounting for the vaccine and diminishing potency as viruses mutate.
I think 250 deaths a day is perfectly acceptable. There is no thing as zero covid and making the NHS the NCS makes deaths from other illnesses far greater.
I'll take 250 deaths a day in winter, just as we do for flu (and if covid replaces flu, then we are no worse off) than have cancer patients, kidney failure, diabetes, cardiac patients etc unable to get treatment, wouldnt you?

Jas, its 50,000 positive tests, its not 50,000 people suffering from covid.

Exactly. This video on the Evergreen college controversy illustrates the type well. Dim witted, unreasonable hippies.super_realist wrote:incontinentia wrote:Have to laugh at staff in "woke" companies like Spotify and Netflix protesting some of the content those companies put out. The latest Dave Chapelle special has caused uproar again with the trans community. I watched it and found Dave's viewpoint totally reasonable, and that most sensible people would take his side. Sometimes you have to learn to take a joke.
The woke are the least tolerant people you'll ever find.
Unless your view is in accord with them then you should'nt be heard.
The latest woke hilarity from Woke central (Scotland) has deemed the use of the word "spooky" and "mother" to be potentially offensive.

Yeah? The tests haven’t changed, what’s changed is that out of those 50000 positives, significantly less will get seriously ill. Of course the other stat they’re not telling which would clarify things a bit better is what percentage of total tests are the 50000 positives? I.e. 50000 positives from 500000 tests isn’t as big a deal as 50000 positives from say 100000 tests. Quite surprising how much the narrative has pretty much discarded the R number these days. My partner is sending MANY more pupils home now than this time last year. Apparently LA advice and DofE advice on how to deal with suspected outbreaks is now completely contradictory.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
The number of tests being carried out now is magnitudes higher than the number of tests in when we really had a death problem.
What we need to see is the number of deaths/total tests over various waves.
Currently about 150 people are dying per day from 50,000 positive tests. Thats 0.3%. We simply have to accept that number because more are surely dying or scheduled to die through lack of seeing a gp and lack of diagnosis.

Steve Bruce has left Newcastle "by mutual consent". I understand that to mean that both sides agree he should leave. But does he get paid up to the end of his contract, or does the mutual consent mean there's some negotiation involved?

I think you will find Bruce has been given a large compensation payment .
I dont know any scottish jokes so covid - remember the stat is death within 28 days of a positive covid test ,doesnt mean that person was sick with covid (may have been run over by a bus) we loose around 18000 a week every week so it stands to reason a proportion will have had a positive covid test.I dont have official figures of course but a lot of those in ossy have not been vacinated

Yes but was it the full amount or a deal? I have heard that if some managers get paid off the full amount, they cannot work for the length of what would have been their contract. If they take less then they can work as soon as they are offered a job. That's what I am trying to understand about leaving "by mutual consent". Does it involve a variation in the payoff?

It is being reported that he will get £8 million. Probably in his best interests to be out of there. A terrible set of fans and now the worst owners you could imagine.

I assume they are doing it to show support for the saudis, which is totally idiotic. As I said somewhere above, the newcastle fans are generally atrocious. From bleating about bruce to thinking they are owed success based on no history of winning anything.

Is it not hypocritical to be sponsored by gambling companies and alcohol companies whilst taking the knee but also supporting a backward and repulsive theocracy at thesame time? How can football fans square that circle?

Not sure drinks companies are on the same level as the Saudis, gambling companies are however getting close. And anyway, do you really disagree with the Saudi regime that much? A bit rich of you to say football has no morals.
As for the players taking a knee, what would the business dealings of their club have to do with a protest they want to make?

My point Mac is the contradictory beliefs, double standards and hypocrisy of both fans, club and new owners. How can you be in favour of the pointless gesture of "taking the knee" ( what was wrong with "Kick it Out"? ") , but simulataneously approve of your club being owned by a seriously dodgy regime like the Saudis.
How can the Saudis, which run a theocratic, islamist, backward country be associated with a club sponsored by alcohol companies and betting firms which are contrary to their disgusting and backward religion? Thats hypocrisy.
If you are genuinely the sort of person who wants to make a contrived and ineffective gesture against racism, why would you continue to support a club which is financed by a regime that stones adulterers, treats women as second class citizens, dismembers journalists, executes people in football stadiums and kills gay people? Is racism unacceptable and intolerable but those other things are fine as long as they buy players for your club? How easily football fans are bought and how easily they excuse the obvious wrongs of their owners.
This a a club who used to want rid of Mike Ashley because he treated his staff poorly, but apparently Saudi ownership is deemed more acceptable. You couldnt make it up.
You cannot have it both ways and Newcastle fans and players shoyld be embarrassed to play for and support the club and pretend to be worried about racism.

Quite a lot really, you cannot bemoan social issues when those paying you are guilty of those very things, it's hypocritical to say the least. There are exceptions with the likes of Rashford and Henderson who actually do something about it rather than doing a now meaningless gesture.

Raheem Sterling aswell, has an Mbe for services to racial equality in sport, plus made donations with regards to Grenfell.
But, players players, rightly, taking a stand against racism, while being paid by the Saudis Is a contradiction to say the least.
I still like laughing at NUFC fans who claim its all separate from the Saudi state.

I know people don't like wokeness, but the crazy anti woke nutters are just as bad. Trump trying to create an anti woke social media platform.
But, isn't it just again another strange fabricated way to do an US and them thing. People use extreme woke views as something to get riled about, which causes extreme reactions the other side. But again it's all just loud minorities.

Extremes of left and right are certainly problematic, but there is a creeping wokeness that is both irritating and laughable.
Im not suggesting anyone should counter this by being provocative in terms of abuse, but suggesting that words like "spooky" or "mother" shouldn't be used is hysterically stupid.
The response to the Chappelle issue (For the record i dont find him or many American comedians funny) is just embarrassing.
If you dont like him, as i dont, dont watch him. You dont need to ban him or petition Netflix to cancel him. Thats intolerance and anti free speech.
We only need to look at the whole "woman and cervix's" issue and politicians inability to answer as an example how creeping and ridiculous this has become, or the school which wants to replace the word "good" with "skilled" and "not good" with "unskilled". It would be a crime against grammar if nothing else.

The scariest thing is when such woke revisionists obtain some position of power. Many are simply not well educated enough and have trouble expressing themselves or their ideas in a convincing way.
When the boot is on the other foot and a question or clarification is required by someone else (say from a journalist) they can get very defensive and aggressive when losing the plot and thus revealing their true nature.
I believe they are emotionally immature and are therefore in no position to make any rational contribution to an argument without contradicting themselves or proving (in their own words) that they are even more unsympathetic and insensitive than the ideas or people they are criticising or accusing.
