England post 2022 6Ns, Aus tour and beyond
First topic message reminder :
In five starts and four sub appearances he's bagged five tries. One appearance and one try for England.
It's a bench lacking experience but it's the type of players we'd like to have as options come the world cup.
Ignore the front row that pretty much picked itself.
Chessum - covers lock and 6 highly mobile and physical, good lineout option and we've been desperate for a young lock to come through.
Ludlam - covers 8 and 7 which is what the bench needs, club captain so adds much needed leadership here.
JVP - no one likes the current 9 options for last season's Under 20 captain and player of the J6N gets a chance. Best kicking game of the three 9s on tour and likes to play high tempo.
Porter - covers every position in the backs outside of 9 and 10, could probably do a job on the flank as well. Eddie likes a versatility option as they very much help the overall squad come world cup so audition time for Guy.
Arundell - exciting young player, not ready yet but Eddie will be hoping some international game time might speed up his development. Unlikely starter but potential game changer off the bench, always handy to have one of those at a world cup. Porter's inclusion means Arundell won't have to go in early unless there's multiple injuries.

Yeah those are the rules I guess. Should have been two yellows, or a chat from the ref and play on, IMO.

Two yellows was surely the sensible choice?
Agree it was soft, but why did he do it? A bit of handbags and he would be on the pitch and Hill in the bin for 10!

Not gonna lie if that happened against Scotland I'm sure I'd be screaming red all day.
This sport just becomes a complete farce sometimes when a slight brush to the face is a red and much worse contacts are barely penalty worthy!

So...Swain gets smacked around the head, gets his hair pulled, finally retaliates, and he's the one sent off?
That's a complete joke.

This is what I'm getting at - some of these laws are very hard to justify to a non rugby fan

The retaliator always gets worse than the perpetrator, always been the way in rugby, we should not be surprised!

I think hair pulling is just as bad as a headbutt, personally. But why wasn't this looked at?

Hope Australia win as they've been completely cheated.

Well I don't condone what Swain has done, he is going to get cited and sit out for a couple of matches.
But if you are going to play against the law, you might as well do it properly.

England started well, very direct and making ground but nothing to really show for it and Australia have come back, and looked more likely to score a try. Not a great game really.

In terms of actual rugby, England not doing very much but playing for territory and 3 points. As I said earlier a try either way will really dictate this game, especially if Australia pull ahead and England have to chase the game.

Have to say, Hill is a complete and utter pr!ck. Gets that little headbutt, after everything else that he has done, and immediately looks to the touch judge to try and get Swain sent off. Cowardly and pathetic.

I'd have said same card for both but hey ho. They were both incredibly dim.

Without labouring the point....how could the ref have missed something that happened 1m away in his direct line of sight?

He didn't, but if Swain made a scene as Hill did to the AR, it would have forced the referee to act.

Looked at first as if Hill's body blocked the contact from the ref's view but, on second viewing, looks like a bit of day-dreaming going on

Yeah, yellow for both on that incident would be fine, but obviously Hill should have been red-carded earlier.

Given the consistency in world rugby citing processes I'm sure Swain will be given a 3 year ban and Hil will be given a free pack of biscuits for his troubles!

Good try by England. Probably their best passage of play so far.

Not many English active on this thread since KO, usually they would be. I wonder if they’re watching the match with just one eye open…

A lot happens at a maul, I imagine he was busy checking the offside line for the defence and what was happening around the ball.
Good finish from Genge after the rolling maul faltered.

I think the Welsh have conspired with the Aussies to poison Farrell's kicking leg.

If they'd poisoned Smith as well that would explain his desperate lack of accuracy as well.

I've had to dip in and out of this match. From what I have seen, Smith has either been on the wrong wavelength with his teamates, or guilty of poor passing.

So how come that is a yellow only because it is 'passive' when Swain didn't get the same consideration when his was also minimal force?

Somewhat a rugby incident, in either he tackles Hooper or moves out of the way. In rugby you don’t move out of the way. Harsh call again but by the law.

Maybe because one was a tackle and one was a headbutt!
Headbutts are optional!

Would agree with that. I wonder if that's mainly why Care was brought back, to use a club partnership at international level.

Yes but when refs are talking through the incidents a key consideration to decide on red/yellow is whether there was any force or not.
I'm very much aware I've laboured this point so will let it go

England have shown very little ambition. It almost worked (and may well still get them the win) but they seemed content to score by 3s all game

Superb last try.
Whilst I was pessimistic about England's chances in this one, I did think they would get one test win in this three-game series but, on this evidence, difficult to see that happening. Pressure is going to pile further on Jones after this.
