The real problem in Boxing
Forget too many weight classes, too many belts, too many promoters, too many greedy boxers. In truth, irrelevant of all of this, boxing still has great fights and will continue do so. The real problem in boxing is PAY PER VIEW. Particually in the UK I find
DeGale v Groves
Haye v Harrison
Any Amir Khan fight
Its a disgrace. I dont even have a Sky box because to be honest I hardly watch any TV. So because I dont want to buy a box that enables me to watch a 1970s show repeated (lets be honest thats all Sky shows) and MTV base (hot girls but the music is blugh*) and then pay £15 on top of that basically I am being completely cut off from the sport I love. It comes to something when your getting excited about Fury v Chisora just because its on Channel 5 at a decent time
PPV........taking boxing away from the fans

Fury v Chisora on channel five is great, but they hopefully won't be doing that as a 1 off, Khan's fights are a sham, especially trying to justify fighting a shot has been who has always fell short against top fighters, for box office. Nah, i'm no idiot, neither are many boxing fans. Not getting sucked in, DeGale, Groves, Cleverly, Froch all much better value for money than Khan imo.

Khan-Judah's not that bad a fight though, given it's a unification fight...

Nah, he's shot to bits. If you like it buy it, but i don't get the fuss about a fighter who has been beat by anyone he's ever fought in a big fight who is world class. He's a overrated hasbeen.

But he has a title, so in terms of bargaining chips it gives Khan an extra tick when it comes to negotiating the Bradley fight, and we both know that Khan is all about the $$$. Who else would you have Khan fight at 140?

Quite right. Steffan has played the game with the ' Welsh Nationalist ' stuff, and we owe him the same.
There's a PM for you, Steffan.

Re: The real problem in Boxing
It's certainly a problem, but I think it stems from larger problems with promotion and management. Terrestrial t.v won't get involved with boxing while it remains so unreliable in terms of big fights regularly coming off and fighters being matched with a reasonable quality of opposition. Recent events in the boxing world including the ongoing Manny/Floyd saga and the debacle that was Haye vs Harrison can only serve to further convince terrestrial channels to stay away.

Re: The real problem in Boxing
Post Fury/Chisora I hope to see an article form Steffan saying that the real problem with boxing is having it shown on Channel Five by a bunch of half literate shaven ******* monkeys.
I remember a few years ago that another channel tried their hand at it. I wanna say it was a Robin Reid fight but I can't be certain. Some young woman was doing interviews and to say she was sh*te would be doing sh*te a grave injustice. As for the main guy, he asked respected boxing journos what it felt like to be "whacked in the face"
It was dire, I can't see channel five being much better!

If the commentator used is a slightly brain damaged chimp who spends the whole fight doing monkey screams and chewing the microphone, it'll still be a vast improvement on Jim Watt.

Re: The real problem in Boxing
In Watt's defence think with the Haye fight the point he was trying to make was it was unlikely Haye would get the nod in Germany by utilising such passive tactics, a view I did share at the time.

Isn't Jim Watt just sh1te in the same way that Murray Walker was sh1te?

Can't put my finger on why I don't like him as a commentator, but I do find him an aching balls of a man.

Best for what, random utterances that only vaguely refer to the fight he's watching?
"This guys like a MacDonald's, you gotta buy it but you can take the pickles off if you want..or go to KFC"
WHAT THE **** ARE YOU BABBLING ON ABOUT MAN?

The absolute worst has to be Colonel Bob Sheridan. The bloke is clearly not a believer in the theory that sometimes it pays to let the action speak for itself he never ever shuts up

At least what he says is coherent, if not surplus to requirements

Agreed - he's cringe-inducing.
Jim Watt's great, leave him alone:)

Have you played the last couple Fight Night games? The stuff he spouts in those is awful.

Haha, brilliant. Teddy Atlas is some man. Even on Fight Night his commentary is incredibly daft.

Re: The real problem in Boxing
You are right on the money with this one our kid. PPV has killed the sport for the non-purists, let's not forget there are millions of 'em, and when Ali fought Frazier et al way back when, it was an inclusive event. Now there is much less opportunity to find those fans who would follow boxing if only they knew about it.

And it's no good saying terrestrial tv won't touch it...Yeah, thanks to Murdoch!

Re: The real problem in Boxing
Only just picked up this thread, but it's a bit OTT. There have been 50 something Sky PPVs in 15 years, they have been more common in the past than now.
