Will Rory mc Ilroy win the U.S open

I see I'm the only doubter so far! Hope I'm proven wrong...

I have always liked McIlroy but questioned his ability to win big because of his overly aggressive golf and streaky putting. However, after The Masters my opinion changed completely of the lad. Obviously it was one of the most painful final rounds to watch and watching it alone might make you think that he will never win again. However, the next day he was on the plane to Malaysia to tee off in a mediocre tour event that he had committed to -this was one day after one of the biggest blow ups in majors history and just showed so much character. This character is what will make it his first major come Sunday and if he keeps hitting like the first two days then I think we might compare this week to Tiger's win in '97. Cue the media circus...

No, I don't think he'll win. I think it's too early for him. In about 8 or 9 years, he'll be able to finish the job off. That ugly 6 last night shows he isn't the finished article yet, by a long way. It'll be on his mind today, I expect he'll be closer to 80 that 70 today.

I think this third round is vital - he shoots no more than 1 or 2 over and it's going to be hard for someone to catch him unless they do what he's done and shoot to back-to-back belters. It's all in his head now and this is where a good management team and a cool-headed caddy earn their stripes. He can do it and I hope he does.

I've gone for a yes. He must have learnt from last year's Open and Augusta this year. If he's well clear after today, I think it's a done deal. If anyone can get close to him (say, 3-4 shots back) for the start of R4, it'll be a real test. Hope his putting streak continues.

Hope he does it though. If I could pick a swing right now to drool over, it'd be Midget Mac's. His balance throughout the swing, even on a full drive, is pretty impressive.

He certainly has the ability no question about that. If he manages to pick up one or two today or even par he is in a good position. I think he does have to stay somewhat aggressive to win otherwise he won't win.

The thing about "staying aggressive" is an interesting one. They keep going on about it on Sky, in a way that suggests he lost the Masters by being too defensive. Maybe he did, but his troubles really started by a miscued drive on a hole where most were hitting 3 woods. It all comes down to course management really. I'd say that he should go out today with the exact same gameplan as he's had the first two days; but if he winds up with a big 54 hole lead, say 5 shots or more, I'd like to see him keep the driver in the bag and just play fairways and greens. Faldo won a major with 18 pars on Sunday, if McIlroy can avoid a cricket score today he can do the same.

I hate to say it but I still think Rory has an 80 in him on that course (or at least a 76-77). If I'm right, for his sake I hope he has it today rather than tomorrow

McILROY, SHALL LEARN FROM HIS MASTERS EXPERIENCE, HE NEEDS TO KEEP ATTACKING THIS COURSE IT IS SET UP FOR A DRAWER OF THE BALL, I BELIEVE HE SHALL WIN BY AT LEAST 4 SHOTS.

At least George said what he thought - and he was far from the only one to think that way (myself included)

Looking back on the thread I don't see you sticking your neck on the line one way or the other

davie, i was at a tradeshow for 4 days and haven't been on the internet during that time (also missed vast tracts of the final 2 days which was gutting).

i've always believed that rory needed to find a mentor to help him put the final mental piece of the puzzle together and have made that quite clear in other posts and threads.

george did indeed say what he thought and it's so incredibly wide of the mark, it's hilarious. let's take a look, shall we?

"That ugly 6 last night shows he isn't the finished article yet, by a long way." - He got over exuberrant having put a second fabulous round on top of the first. how many other players had ugly 6s, 7s or worse? sadly for them, they didn't also have 11 birdies, one eagle and the rest pars.

as i say, comedy gold in it's miserable, naysaying inaccuracy.

There is also a classic from Maverick somewhere in Kwini's article critisizing McIlroy's preparation and saying he wouldn't trouble the leaders.

Still as Davie says it's all about giving your opinion and not being wise after the event. My fantasy league position tells you all about what I know!

The lad did fabulously well, he has had 7 fantastic rounds out of 8 in the last two majors, i think the talk of 'the new Tiger' is extremely premature but for me he looks like the best Brit since Faldo

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I bet just about everyone on here was convinced that when Rory stood on the first tee of Masters Sunday he was going to romp home.

I know I did.

I think most will agree that if they were told Rory would finish -16 Par, you wouldn't have believed it.
