Wimbledon day 1
First topic message reminder :
Here it is people! The start of Wimbledon. Today sees plenty of action, including the start of world n°1 and title holder Rafael Nadal's campaign, and of course the small matter of the man who carries the hopes of an entire nation on his shoulders: Andy Murray. This is the place to discuss the action on day 1 at Wimbledon.

I thought his UE count was higher than 6 for the 1st set, but yeah MFC, his 2nd serve returns are giving Traver cheap points.

Don't worry, he'll invent a way to beat this guy, sometimes this happens when a guy just plays out of his skin, it won't last much longer.

Re: Wimbledon day 1
Murray needed that. That's the first close game that he's actually won. Incidentally, that topspin lob from Gimeno-Traver which just missed is the first shot I can remember him missing by a close margin, all the others seem to have gone in. Hang in there, Andy!

Murray needs to win this in 4, if it goes 5 it will hit him in later rounds.

Re: Wimbledon day 1
Backhand down the line (which has worked well today) does the trick as Murray AT LAST breaks through, and then some big serving sees Murray level the match

What was going on with that last shot with the chance of a break from Murray?

I wish Murray would convert more of these chances. LIKE THAT! Beautiful forehand pass and he breaks first up

Why is he making it so hard on himself?
no offence but Gimeno guy is just a journeyman for the top 15

Re: Wimbledon day 1
to be fair Josiah, Gimeno-Traver has played some super stuff so far, he was just painting the lines in the first two sets, and Murray's game was a bit off, which is normal at the start of a slam...

Re: Wimbledon day 1
shocking game from Gimeno-Traver really, two bad errors, then Murray with a blistering return winner, before GT DFs on break point, and Murray is a double break up at 3-0...

Re: Wimbledon day 1
GT has lost the plot here unfortunately, which is a shame after his first two sets. Bagel on the cards, which unless I'm mistaken would be the first bagel dished out by a male player in these championships. GT has called for the trainer, so Murray asks for a toilet break.

5-0 up in the third and he still finds something to moan about?

Re: Wimbledon day 1
easy set then for Murray, and he's serving at 70% of first serves right now, which is excellent.

Good set by Murray, although GT's form has really dipped. Hope Murray plays another great 4th set now.

Re: Wimbledon day 1
Murray breaks straight away, ten straight games, no way back surely now for GT?

It's hard to judge Murray's performance here...

Re: Wimbledon day 1
he seemed half asleep for the first set before he decided to wake up. GT's dip in form has definitely helped (obviously) but I dunno, I am pleased with Murray's serving at least

Re: Wimbledon day 1
serving has been excellent indeed RD, I think we can all agree with that. He looks like he's hitting it OK too, just played one poor service game, and struggled a bit with ther returns for the first couple of sets.

Re: Wimbledon day 1
ah that was a bute of a shot, lovely stuff.
That's true MfC, think maybe it took him a while to get his eye in, as it were, but the further he goes in this tournament the less he can afford to do that. He has to be ready from the off, not take a set and half to get himself sorted!

Re: Wimbledon day 1
Found his returning feet there though, three clean winners from the return, including two off the first serve, and one return which GT only just gets his racquet to, and Murray will serve for the match. 14 games in a row, soon to be 15?

Well played Andy. A slow start from him but he ended up blowing his opponent away with an array of sublime shots.

You cannot be serious
His opponents first serve in the first set was to say the least excellent.
Fortunately he couldn't keep it up!

Re: Wimbledon day 1
I was being serious at the time sportslover, I honestly think Murray's returning in the first couple of sets was poor (by his standards). I expected him to be making a lot more inroads on the second serve (like in the last two sets), whereas GT was winning 60% of points behind it in the first two sets.
