Dernbach in T20 and ODI squad for Sri Lanka
It is being reported that Dernbach is one of the new faces included in the T20 and ODI squads for the matches against Sri Lanka.
Its good to see the call-up for the world cup was not just a token gesture.
Here's hoping that he gets a game this time!
It will be a good effort from Jade and Surrey cricket if he does play. We may not be meeting our county expectations results-wise, but we are at least doing well in producing potential english players.

Hopefully he will get some matches, otherwise we just lose him to sitting on the sidelines.

I think he'll certainly play at some stage. Don't understand the selection of Finn ahead of Tremlett though - hope we get him back for some matches!

Re: Dernbach in T20 and ODI squad for Sri Lanka
I think it's a reasonable decision not to pick Tremlett for limited overs for England. My impression is that his record is not all that good. Possibly he hasn't got the variety.
Dernbach could do well in T20 or bowling towards end of innings in other ltd overs matches - he mixes it up a bit and could take a few wickets...

I agree to a point Corporal, but I don't think Finn is any better, especially in the 'variety' department.

I would pick Finn ahead of Tremlett for the ODIs, but for T20 I reckon Tremlett should be playing.

I think Dernbach is actually more equipped than both in 50 and 20 over cricket, personally.

In the context of today's fiasco, 1 for 18 off 3 overs is a decent debut!

Looks good on paper, but how many extras did he give away? Mind you he certainly wasn't the worst performer out there today.

Looks like he conceded about 2 wides and the rest off the bat, not all off the middle. In sum, he was probably England's 3rd best contributor today behind Morgan and KP: he bowled ok and his batting no worse than 8 of his 10 teammates'

He bowled 4 wides which is a lot considering he bowled 3 overs. To put it in perspective, during the English innings the combined total of wides bowled by the Sri lankan team was 2.

Youthful enthusiasm, no doubt Of course he didn't have a good game, but it could have been a lot worse. Just ask Samit Patel, poor feller - what a way to celebrate your recall after 3 years away of the national set up.

haha true, patel will want to forget this game quickly as should the majority of his team mates. It looked like many of them were playing this form of the game for the first time - clueless would be a good performance description.

Re: Dernbach in T20 and ODI squad for Sri Lanka
Indeed, but I'm still not convinced we've got it right with the selection. Davies (ok, I'm biased) has been treated shamefully and would offer something up the order with or without the w/k gloves. Conversely, Lumb and Wright appear not up to it: major contributions from either of them feel like a bonus rather than a fulfilled expectation. For T-20 - of all forms of the game - there are very few shoo-ins: maybe Peterson, Morgan, Broad, Swann, then perm any 7 players from 18 Counties on the basis of reputation and form (not necessarily in that order).
PS: how we miss Colly: a great accumulator and good for a couple of overs at least.

Bowling at 6 an over in a T20 games is fine, definitely no shame in his figures, although obviously the wides are a bad thing. I thought he did well. I really don't see how Luke Wright keeps getting himself selected, he is pretty terrible, there must be a better option around surely?

Really? Average of 22 from 46 matches in ODI's and 15 from 30 T20 matches. He doesn't have the technique to open in international cricket and is ineffective lower down the order. Nowhere near good enough for me. Oh and he's supposedly an all rounder, he barely bowls and isn't anything special when he does. A decent county player but nothing more, IMO obviously.

Dernbach was picked for the first ODI - it now looks like he's not going to get a bowl, but it shows England think well of him.

Re: Dernbach in T20 and ODI squad for Sri Lanka
Wright is a great fielder and needs to be utilized as a bowler by England more. He often comes out with the game often lost for England and has to just hit out. Against the Windies he played a brilliant innings and still got slaughtered by the press for getting out when he did.
Re: Dernbach in T20 and ODI squad for Sri Lanka
Wright is ok for what he is, however Patel, Bresnan and (IMO) RHB are better one-day all rounders.

Agree with you jdb about Patel and Bresnan, RHB and Rashid are good shouts as well
Re: Dernbach in T20 and ODI squad for Sri Lanka
Good ODI debut for Dernbach today. Two wickets, plus (apparently) a legitimate catch not given.... Got his slower ball working well.

Re: Dernbach in T20 and ODI squad for Sri Lanka
Yeah he bowled really well I thought, seems to fit in very well in the England set up and provides vital variation, being able to bowl at 90mph and have a perfectly disguised slower ball of 70mph is a great weapon. He should have had 3 wickets, the edge showed up on hot spot and snicko and was a pretty obvious noise which is irritating. He looked more threatening than Broad today.

Re: Dernbach in T20 and ODI squad for Sri Lanka
Good bowling by Dernbach to finish off Sri Lanka in the final ODI. Two wickets in two balls, with a disguised slower one then a yorker. That's a couple of ODIs in the series he's bought to an end in an emphatic way.

Re: Dernbach in T20 and ODI squad for Sri Lanka
Yeah, Dernbach has been very good at the death in this series, although he does need to improve earlier on in the innings if he wants to hold down a place for a long time.

Re: Dernbach in T20 and ODI squad for Sri Lanka
If Dernbach was as good as Malinga, ok (which he may be in the future), but I think that if he doesn't bowl better early on in the India series, he may be dropped after that. I'm not sure I agree with that as Woakes (84mph swing bowler) won't be any good at the death, but it's what I think will happen.

Re: Dernbach in T20 and ODI squad for Sri Lanka
I agree jbd, although I feel that JD has been a bit unlucky in the early overs. I can recall several edges flying through an empty slip cordon in most of the matches of his bowling.
However, this may have been because he hadn't earned slips.

Re: Dernbach in T20 and ODI squad for Sri Lanka
Chill folks. He's just made his international debut in a series against the World Cup finalists. If ever there was a candidate for series figures of 1 or 2 for +/-300 over the 5 games, he was it. Instead, he's come away with 8 for 230, including two telling contributions at the end of an innings - the latter arguably a series-deciding final contribution at a tense time when the wheels could have come off (Matthews well set, Malinga 6 off one ball faced).
He's raw, he's inexperienced and he dropped a dolly at fine leg yesterday, but he's surely shown enough to suggest he could develop into a useful key element of a varied England pace attack in this form of the game.
