Memory Lane - British Pathé News
Came across these lovely old, quintessentially British, clips while on my travels. There are many more if you follow the links, but here are a few to whet your appetites :
Len Harvey training a youngster :

Max Baer v Ben Foord :

Henry Cooper, amateur, at seventeen :

Turpin and Robinson the day after the second fight :
http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=33893
Enjoy.

Enfield at his best, BALTI.
Seriously, though, there's some fantastic stuff to be found by following those links, quite apart from the stuff I've posted here. Some with American commentary, also, which will doubtless please at least one of our regular contributors.

Good heavens he was spiffingly good...
Ha ha as a young American I thought only British comic sketches had voice overs like this....
Bet you remember these newsreels first time around old boy don't you..
Harvey certainly was good for his time..

There are probably a few that I'll come across that I do remember, Truss. Some very good American ones there, don't forget. Might be worth a look.

Do you not think this is why you guys (and in fairness me about Corbett) are so sentimental about the old fighters because with no TV and so little footage these guys remain mysterious, interesting and romantic figures unsullied by over exposure...

Course there's a large element of that Truss. Same reason those bloody awful Johnny Depp films have made everyone think pirates are cool, and not just a bunch of murdering, thieving scum.

Re: Memory Lane - British Pathé News
In all honesty it probably plays a part, Truss. However, I sincerely believe that the greats of yesteryear were as good as the greats of today, and I believe they came by more often.
Then again, as a child of the mid fifties I was the perfect age for a young fan to be smitten by Ali when he came along and he, warts and all, was my first hero and, as I've said before, if a man my age is allowed to have heroes then he still is.

Re: Memory Lane - British Pathé News
Problem with heroes is that there comes a time when they become human and it hurts and spoils the spell!!! We all like to believe in something or somebody because normal life in the main can be mundane at times..
Felt let down by Larry, Donald and Julio cesar when they fell....
We all need heroes but they can hurt when they become human!!!

You're very welcome, GG. Glad you enjoyed it.
Truss, I believe you've hit the nail squarely on the head, there.
