The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Ulster Rugby have just posted this on FB and I thought I would share it with you. Trimble's try agains the Saints. It really was a fabulous try. Look out for one great bit of clearing out by BJ half way through the clip.

Bore da / good morning all.
I love it when the shuffle throws up an overlooked pearl of a song like that.
I found out this morning that the alarm on my new phone won't go off when the phone's turned off, unlike others I've had. So I woke up an hour later than usual and was running around like a blue-bothered fly trying to get ready for work. But I'm here and drinking tea, so all is well

Their lyrics were quite dense, weren't they. On 'Motorcycle Emptiness' I thought some of what he was singing was French.

Big time, I thought he had a speech impediment for a while, then after months of intensive Manics training my ear became tuned into him. Little baby nothing still leaves me confused.

If James Dean Bradfield was writing the lyrics as well at the tunes they might flow a bit more naturally. But then they wouldn't be half the band they are.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Very true. The only Manics song I can think of that he wrote music and lyrics was Ocean Spray. Which wasn’t bad, but it was forgettable when compared to the rest. Didn’t he come out a few years ago and say that he never understood any of the lyrics that Nicky or Richie wrote? I think our resident Manics guru and former editor of their fanzine would know for sure…
Thinking about it, to put Motorcycle emptiness (as just one example), which is a poem by all accounts, to music and make it sound like a proper PROPER rock song, some achievement. It certainly wasn’t rock by numbers, Kings of Leon be warned!

What happened to Kings of Leon? Their first album was cracking, proper Southern rock, but after a while they decided to go stadium. Fair play to them I suppose, they're raking it in.

Ah Kiwi, i'd say the tube is cruel on a day like this! Not good pal!
Lucko - that's exactly it, they decided to write music for the masses and make money. It's garbage but people like it. That being said, any KoL fans i know hate the new stuff, so who is buying it!

Morning all please. In Belfast today and the sun is shining although I am placed in the corner of this building furthest away from it. Still not warm enough for June though. I'm a bit envious of the weather you are having Kiwi.
Mickado, the Kings of Leon original fans are being replaced by Kings of Leon new fans (People like me with little taste in music ).
I watched a good programme last night called Times of Their Lives on Sky Sports 1! It was a discussion by John Jefferies, Craig Chalmers and Gavin Hastings about the lead up to the 1990 Grand Slam winning game against England. Very enjoyable.

Mickado - it's not so much he didn't really understand them, he just didn't give as much thought to them in the same way Nick/Rich did I think. When you consider that JDB was just given reams of lyrics which he then wrote some class tunes tunes to, it shows what an underrated fine musician he is. Richie had no idea about music or constructing songs either, so you can imagine the lyrics JDB had to work through to get a tune, although that's where Nicky came in lyrically, he simplified Richie's ramblings a bit. JDB's not a lyricist though, and he's pretty much admitted that himself.
Lucky - disagree about Gold Against The Soul - way too polished and over produced. Also has some of the worst Manics lyrics, there is only one or two great tracks on it really.
Morning All BTW

Crossed wires, by the looks of it! But Gold Against the Soul isn't great. They more than made up for its excesses with The Holy Bible, though. Their finest hour, for me.

Rav, don’t get me wrong. The KoL were never my cuppan tae, but I know some people who hate the new stuff!
Agree with you Cari about Gold against the soul. La tristessa durera and from despair to where are classics, but there’s some pretty crep numbers on there too!
My most favouritist album would be Everything must go, which isn’t for the purists I suppose. But it’s the best of Richie and Nicky on the same album, not many of them had that balance. Interiors is, to most, a throwaway song. But it’s got a cracking hook, a cracking chorus and probably JDB’s best scream!
“WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT YOU HAAAAAAVE!!!!!!!”

Mickado - it really pished me off when EMG came out and the Richeyphiles were bleating about how it shouldn't have been made, and it was rubbish - and yet there they all were at every gig...As an "old" fan myself I loved it, and I'm glad that they went in the direction they did. Apparently Richie's plan for the next album after THB was "...Pantera meets Nine Inch Nails"

Oh did I ever tell you about the time me and my mates were busking in town, it was about 6 years ago, we were at the height of our Manics obsession and we were playing in temple bar. The was a chap standing listening to us who was the spitting image of Richie, when we finished a song I turned to the lads and said “jeysus, it’s yer man the spit of…” and the both interrupted with “RICHIE!!”. So one of them shouted over “hey Richie!” and he literally ran away. We know it wasn’t him, kinda… but still.

It's 'this sex is on fire,' isn't it? I actually liked that song when it came out, but talk about overkill, it was everywhere. And then when that bloke sang it on the X Factor, that was the last straw.

Yeah, and Leinster playing it for a certain player is overkill an' all....

Leinster don’t play Sexton’s on fire, the crowd sing it sometimes though. Amanda reckons they should play “sexy boy” by Air when he scores, not sure she gets it though, ya know…?
