The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Some management news from NZ, NZ 7s coaching legend Gordon Tietjens is joining the AB's training camp staff. And All Blacks assistant coach Wayne Smith is moving to the (Waikato) Chiefs as assistant to Dave Rennie for next season.

Lucky, if only it were that simple.
Better news, Mrs. R's dad had a better night. Nurses have him out of bed this morning and sitting up in a chair.

Kiwi,
I saw that about Smith. Interesting move for him. The Chiefs have made some good moves. Rennie looks like a fine addition as head coach and Smith is an excellent acquisition.

When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years

Some news on the job front, I got a call from the recruitment agency. They said the role I applied for was more for someone with experience in line management (didn’t say that on the spec!) and although they wouldn’t be putting me forward for that position they wanted me to come in and discuss a few other positions that would be more suited to me. They’ll also help me improve my CV, great news, I’m delighted with all of that.

How much can a CV be improved? Other than having a brief overview, all it should have are your qualifications and work history. Or am I wrong?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Luckless it depends how you write it too. How you phrase things and the structure you employ. I helped out a mate with his CV recently and although he was super achievements he did himself no justice the way he explained them on paper.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I haven't had to hand CV's out since I was about 20 Lucky, I've just filled in online application forms so I reckon mine needs a bit of updating, make it look better etc. Not really sure what companies look for nowadays but I'll do a bit of research online and give it a go. I think you've got it covered though, not sure what else would need to be there.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Lucky there are several ways of producing a CV. Just before I left my job in MOD they provided a training course and part of that was CV development. I was surprised at what you could achieve with a CV. It is a massively important document as it will in most cases be the first thing a prospective employer sees and needs to create the right impression. So much that he will want to talk to you.
I have the course notes as a pdf document, so if anyone is interested please leave me your email address as a PM and I will send them on.

Rava good news on the FiL
I went to see my Dad yesterday only for my Mum to tell me he was in hospital. It seems as though he's got gastroenteritis and was admitted on Saturday. She was expecting him back out last night or today though.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
My CV has to be rewritten from scratch I’d say. She told me that my description of my current role should be less task oriented and more achievement based. Which is fair enough, they’re the experts on selling me, I just need to have the cajones to back it up.
Rav, I’d be very interested in those course notes, if you could send them on to me that would be great. Thanks mate!

I often wonder about that. Surely if my account is totally private then they couldn’t find out much about me, other than my profile picture (which is an epic shot!) and a band I like…? When Guinness made that video for me all they could tell about me was that I used to work in a place called Classic Tuxedo and that I like the Artic Monkeys, I would assume any prospective employer could only see the same.
Nottins, sorry to hear about your dad falling sick, sounds like he’s been through the wars…
Thanks Rav

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Gotta be careful with recruitment agents. It's good if they are looking into you as it means they do see something in you, but remember they're not in it for you, the firms pay them their commission so that is where their loyalties lie. My brother had to chase a recruitment agent, literally phoned him every day to spur him into action. They'll also try and negotiate your salary right down, as they'll get more commission for doing that. But good luck, and hope it goes well for you!
I had my CV looked at when I was on the dole last year and basically what I learned is that you need to sell yourself and as quickly as possible. Preferably in the first sentance or at least the first paragraph. After your opening gambit you need key skills, qualifications and employment history, and you should list these in order of strength (eg my employment history is weak, so I put it last), however employers will only bother reading through this if they are impressed by your opening paragraph. Then maybe a little bit about yourself at the end so they know you're a well-rounded person and that.
I've also really limited my facebook account so you need to add me to see anything of note - basically anything that's not on my CV! But a lot of people won't change their privacy settings and employers can search them and check through all their photos and the like.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Yeah, Robbo. That’s true about recruitment agencies alright. But I used this crowd to find my current position and they were really excellent to deal with, at the end of the day they don’t get paid unless they find me work, and I’m not going to go for something I don’t want or feel comfortable with, so I’m happy to let them do their thing, if I’m made an offer I’ll judge it on its own merits. I’m sure there are some bad stories about them, I could certainly see how things could go pearshaped.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Some people are really lax about access to their Facebook accounts. I remember years ago I emailed a woman who worked at Cardiff University asking her to send me an application form for a job there. As she was added to my contact list she came up on Facebook as a suggested friend. I learned a lot about her that I'm sure her employer would rather wasn't on public view.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
There are good and bad agencies. Two years ago I moved to Bristol on the promise of a job through one agency that came to nothing, and the agency that got me a job were brilliant. Some you really have to chase for them to do anything, but some are really good. They're not acting out of altruism, of course, but few people are.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
After my brother badgering this guy for about a week and a half they found him a job which he's in now. I've met with a couple I've been less than enamoured with though. I guess it depends on the agency, but if you've been with them before you probably already have a good idea of what they're like.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Thanks for the comments about my Dad, my Mum reckons the raw chicken she was feeding him may have caused it, but probably the Chinese takeaway he'd had on Thursday night.
Some agencies are Poopie. I had one who was attentive, even ringing as soon as a second interview had finished. I contacted her twice by phone and once by email to find out if I'd got the job and if I hadn't, why. She never returned my calls or replied to my email. The cheeky cow then emailed me several months later about another position, which I didn't respond to.

You can describe someone as sheepish. As weaselling out of something. Horsing around. Acting the goat. Rabbiting on. Swanning around. Being cowed.

Is there any special method to upload stuff onto youlube,or do I have to wait for 332 minutes while a 4min clip I filmed last evening is etched into digital history?Or am I just being as stubborn as a mule?

I've never heard of that one, Thomond. What does someone acting the maggot do?
You can badger someone. You can be an ass.
You can fish for compliments, but I don't think that counts.

Acting the maggot means messing.
Acting the eejit means the same thing. It could be harmless, it could be not so harmless, but it’s never really used when someone’s doing something really bad.
