***England vs Sri Lanka***1st of 5 ODI Live
First topic message reminder :
Tuesday, June 28, The Oval
Start time 1300 (1200 GMT)
Team news as per cricinfo...
Andrew Strauss's ODI retirement means there will be no change more notable than the one at the top of the order, where Cook will be reunited with his opening partner from last year's tour of Bangladesh, Craig Kieswetter. Of the two rookies who opened the bowling in the Twenty20, Chris Woakes seems the likelier to make way for the returning James Anderson, which means Jade Dernbach should make his ODI debut on his home ground. Tim Bresnan's late inclusion in the squad could squeeze Samit Patel out of the starting XI, despite his five-wicket haul on this ground against South Africa in 2008.
England (probable) 1 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 2 Alastair Cook (capt), 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Ian Bell, 7 Samit Patel/Tim Bresnan, 8 Graeme Swann, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 James Anderson, 11 Jade Dernbach.
Sri Lanka had good news late on Monday when Tillakaratne Dilshan was passed fit after his broken thumb and he'll open with Sanath Jayasuriya, meaning Mahela Jayawardene reverts to his middle-order role. Angelo Mathews is still doubtful to bowl and Dilshan may not be risked with the ball, either.
Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan (capt) 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Thilina Kandamby, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Nuwan Kulasekera, 9 Suranga Lakmal, 10 Suraj Randiv, 11 Lasith Malinga,
Pitch and conditions
London's dank June has given way to a mini-heatwave in the two days leading up to the start of the match, although that is all set to end with thunderstorms forecast for Monday evening. The wet weather should have cleared sufficiently to allow a prompt start at 1pm, but the clouds may still be lingering.

can't ever be comfortable seeing that chucking called bowling.
no wonder people can't pick it up.
Good enough score though. Last over flattered the slinger.

Broad out to the final ball of the innings, but you suspect England will be pretty pleased with their final score of 229, which apparently will be re-adjusted to 232. Pretty good effort you have to say, but not by any means un-acheivable on a good batting pitch.

229/8 is our final score. Very good and I believe it will be revised up a tad.

Re: ***England vs Sri Lanka***1st of 5 ODI Live
Its a good score great cameo by Bresnan. Depends on the start Sri Lanka get, if Dilshan and Jayasuriya get going it could be a few short still...
Re: ***England vs Sri Lanka***1st of 5 ODI Live
The legend Phil Tufnell has something to say on the matter:
"The ball should nip around under the floodlights - it's overcast and humid - and if they put it in some decent areas, then they (England) have a good chance of winning."

I think we may have been in a strong position with about 240 , 250. Can England provide something with the bowling to trouble the sl players this evening ?
On a positive note we've scored at a very good rate against this bowling today. 8)

England you suspect will fancy their chances here. They scored at nearly 8 runs per over after the resumption which is fine going, and the ball should nip around a fair bit under the lights, so if England can bowl well they're in with a great chance. Also remember England have five "proper" bowlers here so no need to mix and match.

I reckon we just need 2 of our seamers to bowl well and Swanny to keep it tight. It's in the bag if we regulary chip away with wickets. SL to make 204/9 I reckon.

Re: ***England vs Sri Lanka***1st of 5 ODI Live
I think just having one spinner will hurt england... oh and Bresnan having just returned and Broad not being in any form could be our undoing as well. KP to bowl a few overs methinks
Q: Can England play with this sort of tempo and flair over a full 50 over game?

Probably hurt his hand again with that catch off KP.
Minor grumble, SL bowling all that full toss rubbish , umpires are too lenient.
NO Ball them I say.

Bresnans more transformed than Shane Warne is
No comparison between him in 2008 and now. Hard to believe but great to see TB playing this good.

Re: ***England vs Sri Lanka***1st of 5 ODI Live
To be fair it pitched outside by a good foot! Pietersen with another runout chance, should have steadied himself I suppose, had a lot of time.
Gregers - It was a good attacking innings by England but we do have a habit of getting out at the wrong time which will hurt in a full 50 over game.
Ooh that's out!

Stupidly good catch from a fast bowler. Mendis is a good player, but don't think he can pull this one off.

Had had a bad world cup in conditions that were the absolute worst for him and fresh from injury but has been good again since.

Also, he is the second best test fast bowler in the world, according to the official ICC rankings.
But obviously, you know better eh?
