Most embarrassing defeats!
First topic message reminder :
Morning Folks
Which fights have you seen (at any point) where the manner of defeat was hugely embarrassing for the fighter?
Some fights I can think of:
Joe Frazier Vs George Foreman
George Foreman knocked Joe to the ground more times than I can remember and the fight ended in round 2 I believe. Joe even looked like he was trying to run away from George at one point. Very embarrassing indeed.
Ricky Hatton Vs Manny Pacquiao
Ricky came out swinging like a kid from a school playground and got promptly flattened by the hard hitting Pacman.
Frank Bruno Vs Mike Tyson 2
Frank basically got flattened in 3 rounds, there was so much hype leading from their 1st encounter that this fight was going to be a cracker. It wasn't, at all.
Amir Khan Vs Bredis Prescott
Golden boy Amir went into this fight as a huge favourite and got sparked in 54 seconds. Has since come back much stronger although the defeat leaves an unanswered blemish on his record.
Any more for any more?
Cheers

88Chris05 wrote:I doubt you were the only one Bamber, in fairness. The fight was before my time but having read various articles in the weeks after it, the way Bruno dispatched of Coetzee actually caused a few shockwaves. Holmes was gone, Tyson was yet to emerge at the very highest level, and there were serious suggestions that Bruno may have been the best Heavyweight in the world. Most thought he'd have the beating of Witherspoon and were putting the Smith defeat merely down to inexperience.
I always find it interesting that, from around the time of the Smith fight in '84, right up until early 1987, Floyd Patterson was drafted in to Bruno's training camps now and then - and he described Bruno as the best Heavyweight prospect he'd ever seen. High praise indeed, but just goes to show how highly rated Bruno was for a short while, even if those ratings do seem a little silly now.
I did not know about Patterson's input either.
Got to be honest. I'd have even picked that Bruno over the end of line Holmes at the time (mind you I was about 16). I think until Witherspoon, Frank had never really been outboxed. At my school we were all massive Bruno fans and saw the Witherspoon fight as a coronation rather than a contest.

I think Antony Mundine must have felt pretty embarassed when he got knocked out by Ottke when he was ahead on points, especially as Ottke only had six knockouts during his career.

Admittedly my mate would have to bulk up to star in the old Mr. Muscle adverts (his sarcastic nickname is '2-Tonne Ash') and the mum is shall we say a 'big lass' who could give Heather off Eastenders a good fight but that didn't help his humiliation ha ha!
Lucky my mate doesn't go on here!

Not the most high profile of fights but Nate Campbell must still cringe when he thinks about his first fight with Robbie Peden.

That was a disgrace of a fight nothing happened first couple of rounds then the acton starts to pick up then Cintron goes flying through the ropes I was like "I just stayed up until like 4:00 in the morning for that!"

Putting that smiley at the end would suggest your a child as would your insistence on saying 'end of'
Embarrassing defeats I can never look past Rahman knocking Lewis out, should never have happened as the rematch proved

No it wouldnt. It would suggest i think its baffling he calls everyone a kid who doesn't think Curry's great. I think you get involved all the time and are a bit boring. End of.

Re: Most embarrassing defeats!
Lewis smiled at Rahman because he was controlling the fight with ease, makes it all the more embarassing because around 5 seconds later he was gone... Woops

Re: Most embarrassing defeats!
Hearns destroying Duran has to be up there, ATG in Duran being humilated.
Cottos quit jobs against Margarito and Pacquiao...Sanders walking through Wladimir and David Haye will be the first dangerous guy Klitschko has faced since that defeat.
Douglas beating up Tyson was embarrassing...More recently old man Hopkins showing up the likes of Pascal and Pavlik.

If you wish to be seen as a mature poster then act like one rather than your continuous petty nature, it's clear you were expecting a rise from Truss so do yourself a favour and act your age. Still don't know why you put end of at the end of every sentence it doesn't prove or highlight anything

You again?
I think Curry/Honey is embarassing for Curry, battered and i mean battered by a 6/1 underdog who he said was a ragamuffin, also think Moorer v Foreman was embarassing for Moorer. Would love to debate you getting involved to be controversial when i place valid opinions but i have a plane to catch to Tenerife, Ciao, End of.

Re: Most embarrassing defeats!
The first fight between Floyd Patterson, heavyweight champion of the world, and Sonny Liston was highly embarrassing for Patterson. It was in September 1962.
Although Liston had a brutal reputation with alleged underworld links, and was the bookies' favourite, Patterson had been the youngest champion (before Tyson) and was the only man until then to have regained the championship. Several former heavyweight champions, including Rocky Marciano, tipped Patterson to win. They regarded Patterson as a high-class ring performer with enough skill and experience to see off a menacing bruiser like Liston. So did 'Sports Illustrated' magazine.
It wasn't that Patterson didn't try against Liston. In fact, he tried too hard to stand toe to toe with him, which proved a mistake. Liston softened Patterson up with heavy body punches and knocked him out with two to the head - all in the first round.
Patterson left after the fight in disguise, he was so embarrassed - wearing dark glasses and a false beard.
The two fought again in 1963, with Patterson as the challenger. That also ended in a first-round K.O by Liston.
It was left to Cassius Clay (Muhammed Ali) to destroy Liston's aura of invincibility in 1964.

spinks v tyson
michael was one of the top 50 ever p4p but suffered his only official loss by lasting only a half a round and scaringly capitualted v a prime tyson. i not saying michael should have won but teh guy who out decisioned holmes twice surely had a lot more to give by boxing clever
