4 Years of Ireland at Under 20 Rugby at JRWC Empty 4 Years of Ireland at Under 20 Rugby at JRWC

Post by MBTGOG Tue Jun 28, 2011 3:47 pm

The fourth edition of the iRB Junior World Championship has ended. Ireland's performances have certainly been nothing to write home about since the the inaugural competition back in 2008. While many get dragged in to the results as a measure of how a national team's production line is holding up but there are several flaws in that idea.

I have posted up the four squads from 2008 and the players in bold are the ones I predict to be internationals and the ones in italics to be provincial players for more than 4 years.

Munsty this is an interesting article. I will take time later to post a response but initially I can't see that you have left anyone out of the "bold" section. There may be a few others (in italics) that I disagree on but only from an Ulster perspective.

Yeah Kiwi, that's why he's in the italics group. My query though is he will he be good enough to play for Ireland or even will playing for Connacht hamper his chances?

Have to say you have Ulster just about spot on. I am impressed I couldn't be as accurate for the other provinces
A few points of clarification:

Jamie Smith did play for the province - not quite good enough went to Dragons.
Johny Shiels has played a couple of games but has not been retained for next year.
Jamie Sandford is playing professional rugby somewhere in England - cant remember where

Geoff,

That's why I put an asterix next to Smith's name. I think Sandford signed for Irish?

The class of 2008 really was very poor.

Just noticed Chris Cochrane in the 2008 list - he will make a Provincial player and I reckon he will get a few run outs during the World Cup.

I agree 2008 was a poor year.

Sandford was indeed Irish

The interesting thing is if you look back over the sides and see some of the players I've put in bold or italics were second choice players behind guys whose names no one can remember.

I actually know who all of the Ulster boys were except Michael Entwistle

I have absolutely no recollection - obviously made a big impression Whistle

Not too sure you can take much notice of these teams/squads. For instance, Mike Sherry never got a chance with the U20s (who is our most promising hooker - certainly has the best throw of the lot of them on the horizon and pretty handy about the pitch as well - Tom Sexton was preferred who is playing AIL now).

Conor Murray was dropped for someone called Matthew Healy who I haven't come across playing pro rugby.

Sin,

You certainly can take note of these squads but you should realise that some players might not make them for whatever reason.

Nottins,

While there were some awful performances in both years, there are some very probable future internationals in this most recent crop unlike 2008, which was just a bad group.

2011 was much better than 2008.
As the lists indicated 2008 had 2 potential internationals and 6 potential provincial players (with my Cochrane adjustment)
2011 had 7 potential internationals and 7 potential provincial players.

These tournaments are about finding future players not having a good team. This year Ireland were not strong enough in the forwards but that does not detract from the fact that individually there were some very good players in that squad.

Ah the good old days when Andew Burke was the great white hope in Munster. Then a horrible debut where he cost us the match against Llanelli Scarlets and he disappeared.

2008 was a good year for us (wales) in that respect. May have finished 4th behind NZ, Eng and SA but un-earthed Halfpenny, Biggar, J.Davies, Gareth Owen, Warburton and some others. 2011 has been a mixed bag on the field. They're a good team, actually better than the previous 3 years despite getting absolutely destroyed by NZ and losing to Fiji. I got a feeling we're going to unearth plenty of gems in this team (mostly in the backs and back-row) and in fact some have already got professional contracts.

Well, I'd love to know why Mike Sherry didn't get a game in '08 or '09. He couldn't have improved that much in such a short time. Same with Conor Murray - most of his contribution was from the bench.

The hooker used the U20s used for '08 & '09 was Tom Sexton. The backup was David McGregor.

Murray benched for Matthew Healy.

Anyone know what Sexton, McGregor or Healy are up to now?

Meh sometimes coaches just make strange decisions,NZ have a history of playing full backs at 13 in World Cup knockout matches.Kidney in this years 6N kept playing Luke Fitz at full back and D'Arcy despite terrible performances.

Sin,

I could be totally wrong but Sherry was still in the transition from back row to hooker at stage. Not totally sure though.

If you watched back then, Murray actually played poorly and that was why he was benched. He was first choice at the start of the season.

Those two points then backs up my arguement that these squads don't mean a lot at the end of the day.

Interesting thing is that Healy was originally in the U20s squad as a (sub) hooker in the year they won the GS - 2007. He started at prop for the 2nd game and the rest is history.

These squads certainly do mean a lot but they are also far from conclusive.

Look at that vintage of 2007. Healy, Hagan, Browne, Anderson, O'Donnell, O'Brien, Pollock, O'Donohoe, Keatley, Wynne, Cave, Earls, Monahan, Jones and Fitzgerald who were all part of that group and have made it as pro players at some point or other.

David McGregor has moved to England to continue his rugby career after being usurped by Niall Annett. He's now with Rotherham Titans. Forwards develop at different rates anyway; I'd never read too much into U20 selections, especially in the front row. McAllister would be someone who's come on a lot in a short space of time since his U20 days.

Players who have played regularly for a province or who looks certain to IMO ie Frawley.
Bolded players are those with more than 10 cap or those who are certain to get there ie Stocdale, James Ryan etc.

Players in the current wider squad who either were too old, not qualified for the Ireland U20s, injured or just not selected. Aki, Best, Sean Cronin, James Cronin, Earls, Healy, Henshaw, Herring, Keatley, Kilcoyne, McCloskey, McFadden, SOB, TOD, Quinn Roux, John Ryan, Sexton, Stander, Toner, Payne.

Years: 10
Total: 116
Ireland: 34

So about 3.4 regular internationals come from the U20s per year at least. I say "at least" because it takes time to transition from U20 to full international. For instance Tadhg Beirne and Niall Scannell are from the 2012 group but they could go on to be regular internationals yet.  Same gores for players reaching provincial level.

-The majority of players listed are still in the Irish system.
-The weakest group looks like 2008 and 2014.
-Strongest looks like 2012 and 2016.

Number of players per season who 'made it'. Each player only included once so Henderson is counted in 2012 group only even though he played in 2011 too. Obviously the 2017 and 2018 groups will see a lot of players drop out. From 2008 to 2016 its averaging over 13.0 players per season.

2008 - 9
2009 - 12
2010 - 14
2011 - 12
2012 - 15
2013 - 14
2014 - 12
2015 - 15
2016 - 17
2017 - 22
2018 - 27
