A B&I year?
First topic message reminder :
Golf: Rory won the US Open and there's a couple of Englishmen leading the World rankings.
Tennis: Federer's out and Murray has every chance of winning a GS for the first time in seventy years.
And four great B&I chances in the RWC,
I take my references from Germany and Spain in their Wimbledon successes and their footy triumphs directly afterwards.

Re: A B&I year?
So because there are two countries involved it becomes a “world class rivalry”. Right, I see.
International rules is surely up there. A combination of 2 of the biggest sports in the world played annually over a number of legs ( or tests if you will ). Watched live by 80+k and on tv by millions.

If I wasn't born English, I'd prefer to be 1 Dutch, 2 French, 3 Irish.
Does that help?

Portnoy dislikes everyone equally, including the English. He is truly a multi-cultural inspiration to us all.

Probably.
Either way it's better than conjecturing whether A or B should play at n for X. When you know that the manager/coach makes the decision and sure as hell he's not reading the posts on v2 for guidance.

Says it all.
It's not the FA Cup or the Superbowl or the World Series or anything is it?
The illogical nature of that response says a lot.
All the tournaments quoted are internal to their country the same as GAA finals.
Also clearly from someone who has not got a clue regarding the popularity of GAA sports

Can in dismiss others now?
Outside Ireland who cares?
I'm talking world class rivalries. Even the Boat Race is bigger than any GAA event.

It was an Irish side against an English side. It's a fair call.

Re: A B&I year?
C'mon guys. The original post was about whether some recent sporting results are reflecting well on ALL of us. I really don't give a rats' bumhole whether Paddy Harrington comes from Ireland, McIlroy come from the North or wherever Murray comes from. Or even Lewis Hamilton. I pull for all of them. Also pull for our boys in the Ashes. The Ashes is a big deal, at least in one particlular island off the northwest coast of France.
So, can we give this petty stuff a rest for the remainder of the summer? When the RWC starts, we may well be coming for each other with our proverbial and rhetorical knuckles bared. For now, how about a nice Gin and Tonic, kick your shoes off and let's watch the girls walk by. You do like girls, eh???????
And for the record, I can't watch golf on TV. Best sedation this side of morphine.

Just because you don't agree with Portnoy is there really a reason to trash all English sport?

As I recall I just questioned the popularity of GAA sports on the basis of Irish pubs worldwide.

You dismissed them as not being world class rivalries(what does this mean exactly?) I have no problem with you Portnoy, most of the time you're a decent bloke but rubbishing aspects of Irish sports is pretty annoying.

Hell Fire Thomond.
On the seismic scale, GAAs wouldn't register globally. I deliberately left a Boat Race door open so that it could be kicked to pieces.
On the occasional moments that I watch GAAs matches, I have the same interest as the boat race - Quaint. And you can include Oz Rules, handball and synchronised swimming into that category. Interesting to watch...

Some should understand that the thread was started by someone who is not slow in singing the praises of England compared to other nations on this board.
Many of us found it ironic he started the thread by naming Murray and McIlroy and not a single English sports person.

Of course I should have filled the article with nationalistic clutter.

Re: A B&I year?
Well that was fun for a while,
but all in all the orginal article was basically saying British and Irish sports are at a high,
In rugby we're closer to the Tri nations theams than in recent years going into a world cup, Irish and English team in H-cup final,
Golf - and some great Irish and British players at the moment playing well.
Football - emmm well, we'll see how eurpeon cup qualifation goes
Snooker BandI palyers aways dominate this
Darts can't give much credit to Irish darts players (we've better things to do in the pub), but british ones dominate.
Cricket. England and Wales have been going well, Ireland have been going well to not sure about Scotland
The Sam Maguire and Laim McCartey will both stay in Ireland for another year (there are teams from outside Ireland take part in the All-Ireland [points awarded to who can tell me who the non-irish team who's won an All Ireland when and in which cup, google not allowed])
Boxing- apart from overhyped (by himself) David Haye, British and Irish boxers and been competing well, at look set for medals at the Olympics
F1 well british teams and drivers doing ok
Tennis Murray could win something, been a long time since a home player has been ranked so high and done so well.
So as in the spirit of the article it has to be said Sports and sports people in and from the Irish and British Isles are doing better and in a bigger range of sports than has been done in many many years.
Well done Irish and British sports people and teams.

Mickado you get the Points (friend of mines loves it London have a Hurling All-Ireland and Antrim don't, winds me up)
The points can be exchanged for more pints than you can drink in Tir Na Nog.

Re: A B&I year?
Sorry Cari I missed your anwer when I checked back, you can have the points as well.
When in Tir Na nog (land of enternal youth) time passes slowly so when you come back hundreds of years could have passed, but the years only catch up on you, if you return and touch the ground (as happened poor Osin, when the strap of his horses saddle broke and he fell to the ground).
but don't worry am sure the little folk will let you return to the time ou left and you can spend your points on Fairy cakes (the little folks make the orginal and best ones).
