surrey vs somerset & glamorgan twenty/20
First topic message reminder :
Zafar Ansari returns to feature in a fourteen man Surrey Lions squad to face both Somerset and the Glamorgan Dragons in the Friends Life t20.
The young all rounder is the only addition to the squad that otherwise features the same thirteen that were selected for the FLt20 tie against Kent last Sunday.
The full Surrey Lions squad to face Somerset at the Kia Oval on June 30th and the Glamorgan Dragons at the SWALEC Stadium on July 1st is:
Rory Hamilton-Brown (Captain)
Steven Davies (Wicket Keeper)
Jason Roy
Zander De Bruyn
Tom Maynard
Matthew Spriegel
Gary Wilson
Chris Schofield
Gareth Batty
Yasir Arafat
Zafar Ansari
Tim Linley
Stuart Meaker
Dirk Nannes
who will miss out this time?

Re: surrey vs somerset & glamorgan twenty/20
Some random thoughts:
* Do we need so many bowlers for a t20 game? Meaker actually bowled pretty well but only got the opportunity to bowl two overs.
* As said above and in other threads, we can't afford to give away so many stupid extras. One day we just might end up having a close game where extras could actually make all the difference.
* The Brain and Spriegel used up 24 balls (4 overs) for a pitiful 12 runs. Spriegel is a useful nudger and supporting batsman in CB 40. I'm not sure there is such a role for him in t20, certainly not where and when he normally appears. The Brain appears to be wrongly named, having little clue as to the need for momentum from an experienced batsman in t20.
* Our best t20 performance this season looks like it might be the ''No Result'' we got for a rained off game in Somerset!
* Particulaly for the Corporal - is Ansari a lion cub managed by a donkey?

Evening all. The top order misfires once again.....
Further evidence that Ansari has real potential; that Spriegel is not presently suited to batting down the order in T20; and that The Brain is a good ironic nickname if it's true that he bowled a bouncer with Davies standing up!

Re: surrey vs somerset & glamorgan twenty/20
Our team appears to be more suited to the 40 over game, certainly this is true in the case of Spriegel and Brain. I feel sorry for Roy mostly as because of the tope 2's constant failures he has often been the 'last hope' and must know he's the only other person capable of big hitting and so has to hit out possibly more than he would like. I also don't understand why we are constantly a batsman light, but this has been discussed before and for whatever reason Adams seems to stick to it. It is especially strange given the poor form of our top order. Bizarre.
As for the tournament, it certainly looks like the end of the road for us but for the competition as a whole I can't see past Hampshire again, having Tahir and Afridi bowling together is a great option and they absolutely thumped Kent this evening.
At the end of the day T20 is the least of my priorities for Surrey, and if all we get out of this year is that Schofield stops playing and that we have unearthed a gem in the little gaffer, then it is OK with me.

Re: surrey vs somerset & glamorgan twenty/20
Well another wonderful T20 display
Looking at the table we are only 1 point outside the top four so all is not lost. We need to beat Glamorgan tonight and that will set up a big game against Sussex at Whitgift. This suits me as I have my ticket for that game and on that ground the scores could be high.
I dont get the team selection in this competition, T20 is and should be a batsmans game ,you are not going to win unless you consistantly score 150 plus fact, so you have to have a long batting line up. You could have four top international bowlers they are still going to leak runs in T20.
I still have hope but we do need a win tonight or its all over and we are in dreadful form.

Evening JimBob and all,
Don't expect Depressed to like it but picking Schofield may be the right move as long as we don't let him bowl! He's far more of a biffer than Spriegel and is in decent batting form having whacked 65 for the seconds yesterday.

JimBob - no, only have a Richard Branson tv which I don't think shows S4C. Please tell me if I'm wrong although probably won't make any difference as Mrs Bat is hogging the tennis anyway!

Re: surrey vs somerset & glamorgan twenty/20
apparently de Bruyns highest T20 score is 95*, he must have faced every ball of the match to achieve that (with lots of no-balls too!).
although I agree that the openers are trying to go too hard, too soon. An appropriate balance between the two methods has escaped us this season.

I see we are copying Hampshire with our triple spin attack (despite the objections voiced on this board!).
If it works with Afridi and Tahir (two international leggies), than why not the international leggie that is Schofield!?
