The Best Films Ever!
First topic message reminder :
Seeing as we have over-rated films, how about some of your all time favourites...
Layer Cake - Brilliant film, proper gangster flick, Gambon, Meaney, Craig all play their parts brilliantly.
Love, Honour & Obey - Another classic, such a great brit cast and some great performances from Jonny Lee Miller, Ray Winstone, Sadie Frost and Rhys Ifans.

I'm amazed how many times Batman The Dark Knight was mentioned, I'm not saying it was a bad film, but best ever? Really?

I honestly think the only reason people don't like it being talked about as one of the greatest films ever is because of how recently it was released. I think in 10, maybe even less, years time, it will be held up as one of the best.

That's not my reason, I just don't like the film enough for me to consider it as one of the greatest films ever.invincibleILeak (CL-6WF) wrote:Derbyblue wrote:I'm amazed how many times Batman The Dark Knight was mentioned, I'm not saying it was a bad film, but best ever? Really?

Invincible - I actually think that it is why it is included. In 10 years time No-one will consider it in the top 50 let alone, one of the best.
Its a good film, but it should not be in the same company as some of the other films mentioned (and not mentioned).
Re: The Best Films Ever!
I don't agree with that at all. I think it's the best comic book film of them all, and there have been a lot. I can't think of any reason it can't be held up with the films that have been listed here. I, for one, would much rather watch The Dark Knight over the Matrix.

Ok, just a few I love, there are too many.
Westerns: Once Upon A Time in The West, High Noon.
Gangster: Godfather II, Road to Perdition. White Heat. Once Upon a Time In America.
Sci-Fi: 2001 A Space Odyssey. Blade Runner, Contact.
Enough for now. More later.

My VHS copy of that broke at that point of the film through overuse of the rewind/pause button. That was a sad day in my house.

Re: The Best Films Ever!
The American Pie films got progressivly worse, the first one was very funny, the second one was kinda funny, the third one was pushing it, but the ones where they moved away from the original characters are terrible.
Apparently they're going back to the old characters again though, hopefully that's as good as the first one.

The only one I have seen with new characters was the band camp one.
That was pretty poor alright.
Look forward to seeing the old characters back.
Sean William scott(stiffler) has had the best career sine the AP films.

Re: The Best Films Ever!
My Top Ten Favourite Films
1. 28 Days Later - I have always been a fan of British films ahead of our American counterparts. There is almost a rawness that separates the 2. I remember seeing this and the opening 30 minutes are just a haze. Seeing Murphy walk through London, alone, un-noticed, unaware just sends shudders through you and makes you feel alone. Christopher Eccelstone is brilliant and the way the film unwraps with Murphy trying to escape his surroundings and the reality as if he is living a nightmare like an underdog. Danny Boyle does have the midas touch.
2. Shawshank Redemption - Superb screenplay writing. Each character essence captured brilliantly. I think the aura of respect between Robbins and Freeman was just amazing. The timeline of the film to helped to bring a endless quality to it.
3. The Matrix - Not just for the groundbreaking effects, but the concept that the reality around is virtual and fictional was simply mindblowing. I like a film that questions the atmosphere around you and your beliefs. I like how Reeves is so uncertain of himself and Fishbourne is the total opposite.
4. Gangs of New York - Daniel Day Lewis I love you! It was by far the best film Di Caprio could've followed on from The Beach. Brendon Gleeson is a worthy mention for how he tried to pioneer change and that Day Lewis was against it and wanted a morality for his people. Very tribal like and Day Lewis played the character almost without a script.
5. Trainspotting - Another Danny Boyle classic. Begbie is just a legend in this. Almost if the character was real, you wouldn't give a toss about him, but you can't help but cheer him on. McGregor, Miller and Bremner are on top form in this too, but for me Carlyle stole the show. Proved just how rubbish the 90's was to live in.
6. Pulp Fiction - This film would make everyone's top 10 in my mind. I think the fact you see the film as a whole collection of un-finished stories and yet it comes together as a Masterpiece. Tarantino's attention to detail in this film is second to none. Leaves no stone un-turned and almost explains the chemistry between people and 'just what guys do talk about' feel to life. I think it certainly added a new dimension to Travolta.
7. GoodFellas - This one comes out of the DVD collection everytime I can't find a decent film to watch. Pesci, De Niro, Liotta. It was just fantastic. Shows the beauty of respect and friendship and blood. Yet survival instinct turns it all around. Liotta certainly made narration a must in films based over a timeline.
8. Bladerunner - Before Terminator we had Rutger Hauer showing how to bring a lifeless soul to life. Harrison is fantastic in this as a man not sure of what to make of the lifeless souls in the film and the soundtrack is even more remarkable in this. Vengalis helps in giving the film that futuristic edge. Hauer though was brilliant. A robot not accepting that his only purpose is to serve and not live free. Stunning.
9. Natural Born Killers - This film is just like a thundering kick in the face. It jumps out at you right from the word go. Harrelson in this is immense, an unsuspecting pyscho. Robert Downey Jr is class in this. The way he goes from glory hunting media star to reborn living the ultimate dream on a killing spree is funny as hell.
10. The Silence of the Lambs - I first saw Anthony Hopkins in The Elephant Man and he was superb in that and in this he takes bad guys to a whole new level. His chemistry with Foster is one of pure respect and curiousity and even love with both needing emotional dependancies. Hopkins is unassuming in his character's motives and what he is truly looking for in life.
Sorry if this seems long winded.

Re: The Best Films Ever!
Just a few off the top of my head that I've watched a fair few times.
City of God - Never gets old no matter how many times I watch it.
The Usual Suspects - Great cast, cracking story.
Star Wars 4, 5 & 6 - A fond part of my youth.
Clockwork Orange - Somehow looks dated and futuristic all at once.
Dawn of the Dead (The Original One) - Like the remake, but love the original.
Godfather II - Pacino and DeNiro, enough said.
The Shining - The twins still scare me.
Ju-On (The Grudge Japanese Version) - Scared me like a little girl.

Films such as The Grudge, The Ring etc, are Japanese films which Hollywood have remade for Western audiences, unless you like getting the absolute Poopie scared out of you i would advise to stick the the Hollywood versions. It's too late for Badgerhands.

Depends what kind of film you prefer. Interview with...is a dialogue-heavy, slow-burning horror/drama...but a great film nonetheless. Bram Stoker's Dracula is also good. Its been too long since I saw Lost Boys to recall whether I liked it or not.
That said, there is nothing wrong with action vampire flicks, such as Van Helsing, Blade or Underworld.
Van Helsing centres on the title character's history and how he came to be what he is. The vampire stuff is almost incidental and more a vehicle for telling his story.

Re: The Best Films Ever!
Typing that last post has just reminded me of another brilliant werewolf film...Dog Soldiers.
Equal parts scary, gory and funny and not in the slightest bit intellectual. Just good old-fashioned action-horror.
