Andy Murray no.4 in the World
But NOT because he deserves it because of the number of ranking points he has
maintained for the last 2 years - OH NO !!!
He is just a waste of court space and an imposter to boot !
he only wins *Mickey Mouse* tournaments* and Cluedo.

Cherish?
A bit much. I am happy for Novak as are other tennis fans. Novak fans can cherish the victory. We are happy your man won. We are not bitter fans.

Re: Andy Murray no.4 in the World
I think Novak's win and his season in general should serve as a route to success for Murray. A year ago they were pretty much perceived as neck and neck, players with great ability and potential, but couldn't quite match the 2 at the top of the game.
Djoko improved all aspects of his game by a percent or 2, but more than that he gained huge self belief from Serbia's Davis Cup win. That belief has propelled him to the top of the game.
I honestly believe that Murray just lacks that belief. He plays each point on its own, plays with huge intensity and doesn't suffer dips. That's a change in mentality brought about by the fact he believes he will win every time.
I'm hoping Cahill can make some small modifications, but most of all install the belief in Andy that he can do it and that he WILL do it. That's all he needs. What Djokovic has done in the last 8 months is the blueprint.

It's a fab 3, not a fab four.
If you're going to go further than that, then it should be a fab 5. Unfair not to include Soderling who's beaten BOTH unbeatable Rafa in his own back yard and prime Federer in a slam, whilst appearing in 2 major finals.
Much more comparable to Murray's achivements, than Murray's are to the 3 above him now.

Also how many months has Soderling spent in the top four over the last two years compared to Andy?
That heading is going to look great though, as his claim to fame alongside his name in the tennis hall of fame.

Re: Andy Murray no.4 in the World
Honest question. How long has Soderling spent in the top four rankings over the last two or three years compared to Andy Murray?
Also how many ATP Titles has he won compared to Andy Murray?
Also how many slam semis has he reached this year alone?
Also how many slam semis has he reached in his career?

Re: Andy Murray no.4 in the World
Well Soderling and Murray are much the same in slams, they are both slam finalists on 1 particular surface, and they both performed miserably when they made those finals.
Honestly... if these 2 manage to reach anymore finals, then the other guy across the net will be having a lot of enjoyable post-match celebrations.

To answer my own questions Soderling has spent 6 months in the top four (4 being his highest ranking) whilst Murray has spent around two years in the top four (2 being his highest ranking).
Soderling 9 Career Titles Murray 17 Career Titles
Soderling 0 slam semis this year Murray 3 slam semis this year
Soderling has appeared in two slam semis (both on clay) Murray has appeared in seven slam semis (on all surfaces).
No contest then.

You like stats don't you Craig!
The main stat in all of Tennis folklore is:
Murray 0 slam titles
Soderling 0 slam titles

No they aren't as stats run way deeper in all forms than just slam titles. I mean when sports channels give us match stats do they give us just percentage of points won? No. They give us the lot as is the case here.
I mean going by your analogy then can we assume that Alex Bogdanovic is on a par with Robin Soderling for example?

Re: Andy Murray no.4 in the World
Already pointed out Soderling made 2 slam finals and was ineffective in both:
Murray made 3 slam finals and was ineffective in the 3.
I suppose winning some MS1000 tournaments will make him look better to an extent, but really it is not the same as playing 7 Best of 5 sets in 2 weeks....

Re: Andy Murray no.4 in the World
I like how this has now suddenly taken a different direction, all the while backing up my initial point.
Stats are being dragged up to show Murray has an edge over Soderling...Well the top 3 all have the same, if not better credentials over Murray. So again, it should either be a "fab 3" or extended to five.
Why should Murray be exhaulted in such lofty company, whereas Soderling dismissed as being bracketed with Murray?

Re: Andy Murray no.4 in the World
Of course The Masters Cup counts and is the reason why and how we get rankings. When tennis starts only using slam events as rankings then I'll take your point and in any case if they were to do that then Andy on this year's showings would be higher than four considering he and Novak are the only players to reach the semis or better at all three slams.

Re: Andy Murray no.4 in the World
The reason Murray is being included by some, is that he made the semi's or better in the last 3 slams.
I must admit that Soderling hasn't been able to do this, however his draws have been much more difficult than Murray's *cakewalks*.

Not quite consigliare there is a chasm in between Soderlings full stats compared to Murray's. To be honest I don't go along with the Fab Four (its all just a gimmick linked to The Beatles). I agree you have Federer, Nadal and Djokovic out ahead of the rest but no one can deny that Murray is streets ahead of the rest on recent form and slam showings and world No.4 on merit.

That wouldn't be a bad explanation...Unfortunately though, in case you didn't notice, it started before the last 3 slams.Josiah Maiestas wrote:The reason Murray is being included by some, is that he made the semi's or better in the last 3 slams.

OK, well as long as you are accepting that it's the same "chasm" in both cases, then that's all I'm getting at...as many don't.CaledonianCraig wrote:Not quite consigliare there is a chasm in between Soderlings full stats compared to Murray's. I wouldn't put Murray streets ahead of what I've seen from Del Potro's game lately, although of course he is having to claw back a lot of lost time with the rankings making for tough draws. Murray's been able to go deeper into the French/Wimbledon because of this, but if you actually take the performances in isolation rather than focusing on the irrelevance of what round it was in (Rusty DP vs Godly form Novak then vs Nadal at SW19) you wouldn't be able to rationally justifty Murray being "streets ahead" unless bias.
