Uppercut - The great exponents of Boxing's most sickening weapon??

Horrible punch as anybody that ducks into one knows...Sickening weapon but who are the great upper-cutters....Obviously Saad Muhammad nearly killing Mwale is probably the best example of it's deadly effect.....

Michael Nunn devastated a few fighters like Parker and Tate with it probably with it....Tyson was effective with it as Marv Frazier will tell you....

Who were the great exponents of Boxing's most sickening punch..

Lennox Lewis had a decent uppercut

Annie the black destroyer Shavers. Ali and Ken Norton will testify to that

Lewis did have a good one...Ruddock had an exceptional one...

good choices..Cooper nearly killed willie de wit with his.

Carman Basillio in an interview said that when he threw an uppercut he would aim with the knuckle on the index finger to maximise the stinging effect. I have tried it and can vouch for it.

Nigal Benn's screw uppercut to the ribs the most sickening.

I'll second the note of Lewis for his uppercuts.

Whilst in writing, i've been taught in classes that you shouldn't try and knock someone out with the uppercut and it's used more to set up the cross or hook for the knock-out.

It got me thinking that not many knock-outs or even knock-downs are caused by uppercuts.

Do they generate less power than perceived?

Wouldn't say he was generally a "great" exponent of it, but Buster Douglas landed some beauties on Iron Mike.

Think your right there Valero, it is a punch that knocks the head back perfectly for a hook that will finish the opponent off. It is one on the those punches that can take everything away from a fighter and of course a ko can be scored with one, but as i say i see it more as a powerfull punch to set up a great finish.

Truly gruesome shot that one. Amazing watching Johnson casually wiping teeth out of his glove.

Horrible punch to take..real nose smasher, teeth breaker..you can sometime role with a hook, jab or straight left/right but like the other posters have alluded to....The uppercut hurts you and either prepares you for the finish or finishes you..

No where near enough boxers have a decent uppercut in their arsenal. Probably the most effective punch - especially against people who have decent head movement and tend to weave - a decent uppercut will catch them unawares and stop them dead in their tracks.

Maidana caught Khan with some beauties. The Klitschko's tend to use them once someone gets past their guard. Obviously not in the case of David Haye who only managed to catch Wlad once in the 12th.

Ray Leonard's uppercut as part of the sequence of punches that finished Davey boy Green was great to see.

I dont know if anyone has seen footage of Joe Louis throwing the most beautiful uppercut I have ever seen. It starts with Joe throwing and landing a jab that makes his opponent react with a wild overhand right that he misses only to walk right into a thunderous right hand uppercut from Louis that caught him flush. BEAUTIFUL.

Haye's against Mormeck was good but not seen it much since. Guess because his opponents are taller.

Saw a sickening one from Ibeabuchi.

A good example of someone not really getting to grips with it was Bruno against Lewis. Big Frank backs Lennox in to a corner, Lewis is covering up and Bruno starts throwing some quickish but not particularly hard looking uppercuts, then..........bang. Lennox lands a big left hook over the top of Bruno's right arm and the rest is history.

Frank would have been better served trying one big uppercut rather than the sequence he actually attempted.

Ibeabuchi took out Byrd with a left that was somewhere between and uppercut and a hook.

Tyson-Bruno 1..The uppercut that nearly took poor Frank's head clean off his shoulders was truly awesome..

Naz had a great upper cut from distance, how many times did he try and land it during the Barrera fight though and miss by a couple of ft.

JToney worked that uppercut into his combos mostly while ropa doping, example would be the fight with Vassiliy "The Tiger" Jirov where he spent most of the fight calling the 'tiger ' on to him and then landing the uppercut and short hooks at will. Vassily looked like the elephant man's ugly brother by the end of the fight.

Not sure he was known for them, but azumah nelson uppercut vs pat cowdell, now that is a sickening shot.

The sparring between Tunney and Corbett is really interesting to watch - Corbett's uppercut is pretty impressive and worth considering.

roy jones had a good uppercut, didn't knock out too many fighters with it but it was usually the shot he threw that stunned his opponent and set up the knockout

Not sure if he pulls him into it, Grant had already been on the floor 3 times, then they were in a clinch, Lewis detonates the uppercut and Grant's gone. Lennox did have a tendency to hold and punch though - look at the way he was holding Brunos mush with one hand and teeing off on it with the other.

He also landed a belter on Holyfield in their second fight right at the end of a round, may have been 10 or 11. Again, credit to Evander for staying on his feet. I remember Holyfield taking a very slow walk back to his stool and his cornermen throwing water on him to help him get his senses together.

Who can forget the 3 right uppercuts in a row Lewis landed on Justin Fortune to get him out of there. Granted it was only Justin Fortune, but still a fantastic display of accuracy and not often you see 3 uppercuts in a row all landing.
