The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

I don't really count the English part Gibbo, dunno why really, I just don't feel English in the slightest. Which is weird actually when I consider how pro English my Dad is (he's the Londoner). Mind you I always thought that was odd considering his parents were Welsh and Irish! Families eh? they never make too much sense

Some beautiful, wonderful poets died in the Great War. Edward Thomas and Wilfred Owen, both so young and gifted. A moment for them, if no one minds.

I have Irish lineage. Hate it obviously , but you don't get a surname like mine without a slight Irish background. Have family who are now residing in Waterford (who are Irish) and I have family who are involved with the horse racing scene (who I think are Welsh) who live in Ireland now I think.
Off to Tesco for a food shop. Time to restock the Fridge. Can't wait for the Super Rugby final tomorrow.

They were Lucky, Lucky. So was I. I wouldnt be here to say it. Funny ol game - chance eh?
Some of the stories... man. They used bottle it up a lot when Id ask them. It was that awful to remember.
Thing is - they did it to rear and feed their kids. Like so many others at that time. Also, so many kids died in that War. Some as young as 15. They lied to get in. A whole generation of young men sacrificed their lives. So sad.
Anyway. Yeah, they survived and lived to a ripe old age. I learned a lot from them.

I'm alright lucky
Howya yourself?
I'm looking (or loo king the way me orse has been today) forward to a long weekend . Had a good mid year performance review with my manager today.
will do for me. It signifies a desert with nothing going on. Cactusville was the name we gave to Northolt Park station when me and Andy used to catch the train from there for Wasps games.

My Mam's uncle was at the Somme. All the rest of my family were farmers and colliers and hence contributed to the War effort at home. My grandfather worked shifts underground and at munitions factories and was in the Dad's Army. My first Cousin was in Vietnam and survived the war only to die in a car crash just after his return.

My Grandad C fought in WWII. He was a rifleman I believe. Don't know where he fought though. I just know he met my Grandma C in London where she went to work in the NAAFI (I think that's what they were called). I should ask my Dad really if he knows much of my Grandad's time in the war.

My grandpa was at Dunkirk. I remember every summer holiday seeing the framed certificate he had with 'Dunkerque' on it and thinking what a strange word it was. He was such a reticent man. I'm proud to be his.
So enough about war. It's really not long until the start of the new Magne - Pro 12 league, is it? Are we awaiting new signings, or are our squads complete?

Evening pub. What a busy day, I am knackered!
for Gibbo, and a medicinal Try and find a good osteopath, one sorted me out when I had an inflamed nerve in my neck.
Munster well done you!
Family lineage? I'm a mish-mash. English - Yorkshire father, Geordie mum. Scottish heritage on mum's side, McLaren clan, and Irish and Spanish also on mum's side. Dad's family originally came from Essex...

Lucky - I think the squads are complete. Only 4 signings for the Scarlets this season unless they're waiting to spring the news of having bagged an amazing player! (this will not happen). Can't wait for the pre-season friendlies to start now

Dreamer, that must be the same amazing player we're supposed to be after!
Swanny, when I was younger we went on a fortnight's holiday near Skipton in Yorkshire. My main memory is of running around for the whole fortnight and going for walks with the family along the Pennines. God looked fondly on that part of the world.

Skipton is a great spot Lucky. Sheffield is my home town, not quite so scenic
I grew up on the east edge of the Pennines and now live in the foothills of the west Pennines. It's not a bad place to be

I remember chatting to Gibbo about that before. My great grandad was another Somme survivor. Lost his leg in the fighting though.
Hell of a thing living the rest of your life with one leg, but apparently he was great craic. Used to go up ladders and everything.
Lot of young Irishmen fought in the Somme. My mothers grandad was particularly young though- 16. I can't believe they believed him when he lied about his age, but I suppose the British Army were just looking for cannon fodder.

Yep. My dad's granddad was about the same age (18 in 1918). He wasn't a very nice man apparently but I wonder how much it affected him.

That's why Yorkshire folk often refer to Yorkshire as 'God's own County'.
I'm getting close to the weekend's festivities - Titanic brewery's Iceberg from Stoke on Trent.
Yum!
If Penfro pops in, some pals enjoyed a Purple Moose ale at this week's Ealing beer festival :jealous:. Not cwrw haf though. Superb stuff in the 'Diff last month

Notch, it's well documented that they allowed under-age boys through to go to the front line.
A Welsh poet whose nom de plume was Hedd Wyn ('White Peace') was awarded the bardic chair - the greatest honour a bardd (poet) can be awarded) and it was found that he'd died in the Great War. His parents received the letter saying he'd won the Chair before they received the letter saying he'd died at war. They draped the chair in a black cloth at the ceremony.

Gibbo, just read this elsewhere. I think it sums us up.
One should not arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, rather the opposite, one should arrive sliding sideways, out of breath, exclaiming "holy phook, that was one hell of a ride"

Does anyone else remember the (banned) music video where a child was shot out of his mother's lady garden, aged as he flew through the air, and landed old and decrepit in his grave? It was insensitive perhaps, but no less accurate than old Shakespeare with his 'all the world's a stage.'
