The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

I never realised they do airmiles over here in Europe.
I thought that was very much an American thing.
For the Irish regs (unless it's out in the UK), I went to see "The Guard" last night. very funny

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I have never seen Harry Potter.
Herself has read the books in english and french and seen all the movies. I don't like seeing those type of films that have 10 year spans or whatever.
I just couldn't commit to a franchise for a large chunk of my life.
I might watch them as a box set one time.

I'd recommend the books over the films Micky, every time.
Having said that I am hopefully going to go and watch this last film on Sunday, or I might save it as a treat for myself on the Monday, can't wait for it!

Think I've only liked 2 of the 7 Harry Potter movies. Love the books though. They way they are set up though means that Book 1 is designed for 11 year olds but Book 7 is designed for more adult readers.
You wouldn't enjoy it now if you started reading (unless your like me and have the mind of a child)

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Harry Potter books are twice as good as the films. The films are just an almighty money spinning exercise and it pains me greatly the some kids would rather watch the film than read the books. Personally I found Daniel Radcliffe's acting in the first film so deplorable I haven't seen any of the others.
It's genuinely a once in a lifetime series. No other book series will create such a stir to the extent where people (myself included) wait outside a Waterstones (other book retailers are available), at midnight waiting for the book.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Willy - his acting doesn't improve all that much in the other films either, although I will give him some credit in that he's never as bad as that first film again!
The books really are incredible though, nearly always got released around my birthday time too so I always had that to look forward to. Just love them.
And I would say for the books, I don't think it matters how old you are when you start reading them. My parents loved them, even the first 2, and so did my uncle and he practically never reads books. They just seem to be readable for any age.

He isn't a good actor Radcliffe. Harrys a tough character though. He's a seriously messed up teenager bottles up a lot of stuff and has these outbursts from time to time. I don't think any of that comes across well in the films.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
well maybe it's something that I will read to my kids when I am older stag.. seems like the type of books that will pass through generations being mentioned..

Dreamer heres a question. Character of Bellatrix Lestrange - the only character who is better on screen than in the books?
She has gone from a crony to one of the main villains IMO.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
nah it doesn't at all. Radcliffe is good at all the fighting and action stuff, but when it comes to the more emotional scenes...yeah just not good.
Apparently he's much better in theatre.
Bellatrix? God I hated her in the books. I think they've got her spot on for me. She's just as evil in the film as in the books. Helena Bonham Carter was genius casting for that role. She's one of the only characters for me that is equal to how they are in the books, and I think maybe you're right, perhaps better in the films.

I just thought in movies compared to Voldemort, Snape and even Malfoy she was a bit over shadowed in terms of villains. I think she's the best villain in the piece and has brought a new edge to things.

Dreamer - are you a fan of the nameless faceless type villains like Voldemort (in earlier books) or Sauron in Lord Rings. Or is it a case of out of sight out of mind.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
oh I like them Stag, they're like a hidden menace that never goes away throughout the story (if the story is written well). They're usually a lot better then the in your face villain anway I think.

Hobo, would you stop being a tease and just tell us already!
Harry Potter is probably the biggest franchise from a book ever. From the theme park, films and I know beileve they're bringing out some online role playing game. Rowling is absolutely minted. I read the first 6 books and the last one was runied for me and never got around to reading it,must do it at some stage. While they were good, they were never my favourite. I preferred the Darren Shan series.

Thomond the last book is pretty emotional. I had it done within 24 hours of buying it. She writes out a lot of characters.
I was also a big fan of the Darren Shan books. I thought it tailed off towards the end and got a bit strange, but up to that point they were highly enjoyable.

Yea I think so too. I feel that rather than being nowhere its almost as if they are every/any where. I loved that in the Harry Potter books - you didn't know where Voldemort was, what he was up to. He had no fortress, he wasn't having a show down directly with Harry. It was all very tense. I love it.
The scene when he emerged was incredible and after 5 years (book 4) we finally see him.
Its like the whole is Snape good or bad thing!
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
a Snape is a genius character, kept me guessing right up till the end.
an I really want to read the books again now! After I've seen the last film reckon I'll have to dust them off again

Dreamer I'm in middle of reading Books 4-7 at moment. I'm at book 7 at moment. Its got me well excited for it.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I forgot to add that the theme park makes here millions each year. Only "Harry Potter" drinks are sold there meaning no coke,Sprite,Mountain Dew etc. At $4 or $5 bucks a pop she makes a killing. I was ovewr there around the time it opened and the merchindise available was surreal. Over 2 hours to get a tour of Hogwarts! The wand shop was pretty cool though.
The butterbeer was tasty aswell. Kind of a toffee milkshake.

You know I'm not one to brag, but I did say to myself quietly at the end of the 6th book. Hmmmm now I wonder is this part of Dumbledore/Snape plan, and BOOM I was right! Should really have said to someone at the time cos now noone believes me...

Have to admit I gave up on Harry Potter half-way through book 5 when I realised I was cheering for the baddies. Poor editing irritates me, and by that point Rowling wasn't letting anyone edit the books.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I've enjoyed the Harry Potter books, sentimentally attached as I read the first one aged 10, but if you want to read a really superb series of children's books it has to be the His Dark Materials trilogy.
I remember reading the last Harry Potter book the same summer as I read Ulysses. Ulysses took me a month, on and off, whereas the Deathly Hallows took me three or four hours.
They're very good, but lightweight and undemanding as well. As much as there are intriguing characters (not the bland hero) and a rich mythology behind everything, you can leave your brain at the door and unwind when you're reading them.
And that's nice. I've enjoyed the series; if I have a few hours to kill I can pick up a Harry Potter book and blast through it and enjoy it. That's all you can ask for really.

The Snape thing was great. In some ways easy to work out. In other ways you wouldn't have seen it coming. I had a new theory every day of the week. My favourite being that Snape would kill Voldemort and actually become a new Dark Lord.

Depends what your into Mick. I get like that sometimes. I hear so much hype and can't bring myself to get into it.
I still think it would be hard for a twenty something year old to pick up Philosophers Stone and really get into it compared to the later ones.
It was an ingenious strategy really. Some aspects of the world she created are amazing. Others are a bit non sensical. Overall brilliant though.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
For telling a story the HP books are brilliant, for pure brilliant writing they aren't (know what you mean about the editing Kiwi!).
But if you take them for what they are, they're fab. I put off reading them for ages because of the hype, then ended up reading the first 3 in a day. Couldn't put them down.

Not for everyone. People have different tastes. Books 1 & 2 bore the bum off me. I find them a bit . . .meh compared to the later ones that are more nitty gritty. Others prefer the first ones and get bored by the later books.

Okay, Harry Potter is awesome and really looking forward to the film on Friday.
I'm not totally sure on that stadium for them but if they can get 50-60,000, they'll be doing fantastically well.
Better check out that thread about the Rugby League World Cup.
