He seems to be getting injured a fair amount these days, and as he's only getting older would it be better to cash in on him now rather than losing him on a free later on in his career?

He's been a superb player over the years but I feel because of the type of player he is it's only a matter of time before he breaks down again. I'd expect a box to box player like Essien is going to feel the knocks a little more and his knee(s) is starting to become an issue which happens to the best of em. Even Roy Keane had to take a more subdued role towards the end of his career.

Re: Essien Badly Injured
everyone knows with half a brain cell that michael essien is finished at the top level. He has a chronic knee injury which is severe and chelsea know it. He will come back but his effectivness and influence has dramatically reduced over the last two seasons. real shame was a great great powerhouse in the midfield but injuries have ruined him.

Rumors are that Scott Parker could return to Chelsea to replace him? Parker seems to be going in the wrong direction with age for Chelsea, and I assume Parker doesn't have happy memories of Chelsea so would he even go back there.

He was a great player and even though I'm an Arsenal fan I hope we see the Essien of old. But as has been said I doubt he'll fully recover from this and it will only be a matter of time before his legs break down again.
Shame.
Shame.

When said at the end of last season that Chelsea should sell Essien and keep Mikel! everyone thought I was blowing hot air!!! I said Essien has had 2 major injuries and we would never see the best of him. now he has another major injury! why did united let Hargreaves go?

True, as a Stoke fan, how do you think Mikel compares to Essien? Do you think he can fill the gap?

They let Hargreaves go coz he would never be fit long enough to play to his potential - never really justified his £20m+ price tag - though he was a very good player.

Mikel (in my opinion) is nowhere near the level of Essien. But then to be honest i think most top teams would find it hard to replace a player of that quality.

They probably need to buy at least one centre mid.
Lampard is 33 and can't be expected to play every game. With Essien out for the season, they do look a bit thin in central midfield.
