Ask the Expert....
First topic message reminder :
Having start to frequent this board a bit more in the last week or two, I have noticed the level of knowledge on here by some posters is incredible. From historical events to local knowledge of some courses, the depth between you is very broad indeed.
On one of our other sections, we have an "ask the expert" section, where people can ask questions of the resident expert in their field. It has led to some fascinating discussions and insights that I certainly wasnt aware of. From behind the scenes politics to views on current athletes, the thread has been an incredibly entertaining read.
It hasnt been hampered by ego over stupid questions being asked - instead its a genuine classroom for all levels of questioning.
This led me to approaching one of the golf sections resident masters - Kwinigolfer - to attempt to emulate the thread for the members of this part of the board. Kwini was very humble as to the areas of expertise and has suggested that he would be happy to do it, but may limit his musings/ facts to the USPGA and associated questions.
He also suggested that a couple of other posters may be able to help in other areas where he is less knowledgable. So hopefully members such as PrinceDracula and Ned will also help out where possible.
So I now declare this thread open for you to "ask the experts" on all your golfing matters.
So if you have any questions you ever wanted an answer to, post them below and our resident Golfing Professors will do their best to answer them!
Thanks
H
Edit - I believe that Drive4show has played a huge number of courses around, so if he is willing, he can become our course expert!

Okay folks - by popular opinion, I will close the thread.
It was just an idea that has worked well on other sections and thought I would give it a go - no harm done.
Who says we dont listen to your views!
Apologies to Kwini who I asked for help - sorry to have wasted some of your time!

Why'd do think that Davie?
What if he'd taken a fresh air shot?
If all 3 of us had a drive at a hole and for some reason we don't find any of them, we'd all have to hit again off the tee under penalty so why is this different to what happened to us?

The player who needed the drive, has taken his shot, and you lost it, therefore you are still taking his drive!
The other 3 (or 2 in this case) tee off from there playing 3 from the tee

Sorry Hobo, I dont want to come across as having been negative about the board. I appreciate the thought into coming up with new ideas....I just dont think this one is the best for this particular section of 606v2.

Re: Ask the Expert....
It seemed to me the idea was to give followers of other sports an opportunity to find a way into/onto the golf board.
It would be interesting to know if we are attracting new members for golf; pace seems a bit glacial and not sure if that is inevitable or whether we should be helping the Administrators to find novel ways for registering new posters.
Looking forward to seeing what becomes of the Pat Perez Q&A; not a particularly well known player but the colourful nature of his personality may attract posters from other boards . . . . .
Still don't know that my January / Levi response fitted the bill for best player not to play an Open!!!!!!

You have the resolve of an italian war hero. If you are not in tears over LJ's ribbing of you, you are closing down your threads when you recieve even the slightest critism. Come on man wheres the fighting spirit?

On the subject of golf course architecture, i played what i consider to be an absolute gem a month or two back...
Designed by Harry Colt within the grounds of a manor house rumoured to have landscaped by Capability Brown and two miles from the centre of a major city.... Have a guess?
It was relatively short, but so many great looking holes... the 18th was a pig of a finishing hole compared to the rest but still i would encourage anyone to play it if staying in the said city....

Balls to the lot of you! I was trying to pander to the crowd to get some affection and love. Instead I have decided to turn evil dictator instead and rule with an iron fist.
this thread is a good idea, I was wrong to listen to the baying crowd - dont like the thread? - shove it where the sun don't shine Macca!
Right, back on topic - Kwini - Can you tell me of any players who have a real dislike of each other and what it is over?
Re: Ask the Expert....
...Another clue...
A major 'red brick' university's golf team play their home ties at this club...
Sounds like Edgbaston. Many of the Colt courses have a reciprocal arrangement allowing members to play for a small fee, and I believe I've seen Edgbaston listed on that.

Re: Ask the Expert....
Blimey Hobo, I don't go into the locker room.
Seriously, one only hears about barneys when they're blown up by the media unless you're fortunate enough to be standing between two protagonists.
As an example, I was standing right by the tee at Kiawah Island when Seve had his rules dispute with Azinger and Beck about the Americans using the wrong ball. But most of us there couldn't tell what was going on.
You'll have heard that Bubba Watson is hardly everyone's cup of tea - he and Elkington had at it a few years ago in New Orleans, words unfortunately, not fisticuffs. And Boo Weekley and Bubba famously grew up in the same area, went to the same school, but allegedly can't abide each other.
While Sabbatini has had disagrements with Tiger, Tiger, Tiger, O'Hair, O'Hair, Crane, Na etc etc, while his wife once wore a T-Shirt when Faldo was paired with Sabbatini at The Players, suggesting that SirNick had trouble "keeping up". But: Do we only hear of these because it's Roary?
A lot of players have accused Phil of being a phoney, Appleby in a Golf Digest interview of all things, while Tiger has clearly had "spirited rivalries" with Vijay (remember that Presidents Cup) and probably several others.
Then there's the Allenby / Kim brouhaha, also at a Presidents Cup. Would think the Elkington/Allenby/Lonard/Appleby generation of Aussies have picked more than a fight or two in their day.
When Lee Westwood posted on 606 I was struck by the warm feelings that he had for a number of guys that one wouldn't necessarily have expected so, you see, it's a small community and I think most try to get on and keep disagreements between themselves.
Certainly the on-air commentators play it straight down the middle, any "stories" kept strictly under wraps. I agree! Too bad!!

I think you have to take Goosen's putting on trust! He was shocking en France ten days ago, a little bit better at CS.
That's great value for Lukey and Cabrera (and Colsaerts), not keen on Rose but you never know with him.
Whaddya think??!!

Not sure about Khan, he's been shocking all year apart from the French a fortnight ago. But he does seem to find his form for the big events at the moment.
Like the Cabrera odds a lot though.

Re: Ask the Expert....
DTW,
I can offer some expertise:
Paddy Power is now lisating Goosen and Rose @ 50/1, Cabrera at 66's, Colsaerts at 150/1. Only top five placings though.
Best value e.w. to me would be schwartzel at 40/1! Also think a couple of young Americans might do well, Levin and Streelman, just a hunch but 250 for each of them is far better value than some of the moronic prices being offered.

His playing handicap is +4. The 3/4 allowance is calculated as +4 *4/3 = +5
How can he be off +5, surely it would be +3.....

That's more like an expert!
I thought one of the Saffys would do well last year, unfortunately I put my money on the wrong one. Deadly backed Schwatrzel though, after my advice[grrrrrr]
I think The Open is wide open this year, sneaky feeling in my water that Paul McGinley will do well. I have backed him quite a lot over the years in The Open.

Think about it.
You are playing in a competition with a 3/4 stroke allowance. Your handicap is +4. You score 68. By your suggestion that will be 71 net. I contend that it will be 73. 3/4 allowance means that you don't get the full benefit of your handicap ie you are at a disadvantage compared to your full handicap.
By your reckoning you have gained an advantage - the exact opposite of what is meant to happen.
Hope this makes sense.
