Torchwood - Miracle Day
Anyone watch it?
Thoroughly enjoyed it, even if some of it did seem incredibly cheesy.
How did the guy get from his hospital bed in Washington to a beach in wales without hanging up his call.
And the scene on the beach with the copter just reaked of "we have a bigger budget - lets put in some explosions!"
But all in all very good - and Bill Pullman is one creepy dude....

I know that - my point was more the fact that he landed at Heathrow and was at the beach in the space of minutes - have you ever tried to get a hire car at Heathrow!?!?

I just loved the ranting about wales personally and about being charged to get into Wales etc

Re: Torchwood - Miracle Day
The parts about the bridge and the 'you mean it's separate?' made me laugh. Despite having a bigger budget, some of the special effects seemed awfully cheesy and didn't look realistic. But that didn't take away from the awesome start to the series. At first when I saw the trailer I couldn't see too many negatives about people not dying, but thought the opener explained them well.
I'm guessing Pullman was Oswald Danes? He was really creepy. :run2:

Actually I thought the stunts were mostly done very well and was quite surprised and impressed with the helicopter / RPG sequence...though in reality you'd never fire at something that close! :run2:
The strong US element did give it a very different feel. Overall it came across as part X-Files, part CSI and part sitcom.
Agree that Danes was indeed very creepy - a great coup getting Bill Pullman for that role. However, the main creep-out moment for me was the guy who blew himself up - when Jack Harkness tell the doc to cut his head off!
That said, the absolute best part about Torchwood has always been Eve Myles... *sigh*

Re: Torchwood - Miracle Day
So the second episode has come and gone - thoughts?
Nothing really seem to happen for me but I still enjoyed it.
I also found the humour a bit jarring and out of place at times.
Pullman is just fantastic in his role - I have never seen this creepy side of him before. I liked the ending where the FBI agents head was the wrong way around! And everytime I saw the FBI director, I just wanted to grit my teeth, shake my fist and shout "Newman.....grrrr"

Re: Torchwood - Miracle Day
Found it quite enjoyable, despite hardly anything happening! If you think about it, the Child Catcher went on a TV show and broke down, Torchwood went on a flight across to America and then ran from the CIA(?).
Agree that Pullman is playing his part fantasticly, I really hope he's a big part of the storyline. Next week's episode looks as if there will be much more happening in it.
Is it just me that thought some of the dialogue on the plane was too quick and muffled by the music/other sounds?

Have really enjoyed both episodes so far.
Agree that someimtes the music etc drowns out the dialogue but overall I think it's working really well.
love how Pullman is portraying his character, brilliantly done.

I struggled with the vocals too.
And the 3 main women from last nights episode were strangely attractive - the FBI agent with a Mr Potato head face, the Blonde FBI woman who looks like a weasal and Eve who looks.....Welsh

I enjoyed last nights much more than the first episode. It seemed to be better paced, even though (as said above) not much really seemed to happen looking back.

Am I the only one slightly creeped out by the masks and candle march that was in the trailer for next week?
I really hope that we end up seeing some big, dramatic scenes between Oswald and Gwen.

Re: Torchwood - Miracle Day
If I'm not mistaken Miracle Day is an 8-parter, so I think they're leaving room for lots of build-up.
Don't forget this is written by Russell Davies, who used to like to weave lots of different strands into Dr Who storylines over a whole series and only tie them together at the end.
Reckon the next few episodes will be much like this one...heavy on dialogue without much real action. Just slowly building to the finale.
I thought last night's episode was pretty good. It showed the truly evil side of Danes' character (very different from his TV persona) and how isolated the "new" Torchwood team are, as well as the world's continuing descent into chaos. Also gave a few glimpses as to just who is behind Miracle Day.
Expect there will be plenty more twists and turns before the end.

Say what?
I counted 4 main female characters.
Gwen - who I've had a total crush on for a few years now.
Jillian Kitzinger - Agent / Phicorp employee. Far as I could tell she was a redhead, as well as being extremely cute.
The blonde girl working with Torchwood ("who reads blogs for a living"). She's quite nice too.
The nurse who was asked to spy on the Phicorp meeting - she's pretty fit too.

Re: Torchwood - Miracle Day
just got around to watching last weeks episode.
It had its one magical standout moment so far this week (not the capt Jack sex scene )
The scene where Oswald talks to Jack about killing the girl was simply breathtaking.

Re: Torchwood - Miracle Day
I hadnt watched anything prior to the last mini series (Children of Earth).
Neither of the last 2 series need any back story although I guess it might help with some very subtle in jokes.
This series has built the premise very slowly and the first episode was all the introduction you would ever need.
If you get the chance to watch the last mini series, it was fantastic but very harrowing in parts. Some of the best TV that the UK has produced in years (IMO of course).

Not really. Miracle Day is a fairly lengthy multi-part story in a totally different setting and with only 3 of the original characters from the last series Jack, Gwen and her hubby).
All you really need to know is that Jack Harkness was originally immortal and that whatever happened on Miracle Day has led to a reversal, with the human race now being immortal and Jack now being mortal.
Oh - and Jack is gay, so expect some scenes of man-love and a few gay jokes.

thought last nights episode was brilliant, also the way the guy talked about whoever the 'masters' were makes me think we already know who they are or they would be able to tell us without us knowing who they are, so either someone who has already appeared in the series or characters previously known of.

Re: Torchwood - Miracle Day
Not sure how I feel about this episode. On one hand I thought the death of the doctor was well done, and it looks like the murderer has a bigger role next episode. I guessed quite early after they showed the storage that they would be ovens. But I don't get it. Are those that are incinerated dead; or living in bits of dust? The whole point of miracle day was that no one could die.
Guest- Guest
Re: Torchwood - Miracle Day
If every part of them is incinerated is there a way they can be alive? other cases the body hasn't been fully destroyed which allows the body to move/be concious.
Not sure if there would be life or not after that.

Re: Torchwood - Miracle Day
Really enjoyed this episode last night.
The only thing which did disturb me was that if such evil schemes were truly afoot, how crap is the security?
Gwen and Rhys just trolled through security with her dad, Rex wlaks around a security area, with a camcorder in hand!
The Vera stuff was great, although she did go crazy with her shouting at Maloney! (both were excellent in these scenes)
Also really enjoyed the Oswald/ Jack scenes.
Still get the feeling that this could have been trimmed down a little - still got 4 episodes by my reckoning!

I watched it for the first time last night... I think I'm going to have to spend the whole day on iPlayer catching up on the rest! I hope the other episodes live up to that. Otherwise, I'll blame it on you, Hobo :evils:

Another thing that annoys me is how the public seem to be so easily swinged by a convicted Child Catcher and child murderer thanks to a corny speech. I like the character of Oswald Danes but find how accepted he's been to be completely unrealistic.

People do get swayed easily though and in that situation where they arn't getting information i find it likely they would turn to any individual who would offer hope. However you do still see individuals eg the gate, and the start of his speech, the guy in the first hospital where he went in.

I could understand if this character hadn't been jailed for such a serious crime. To me, a bad person, who then kills the same girl he abused, is the lowest any person could sink and there'd be no return.
Hope in the end the public turn on Danes.

How awesome would the ending be if everyone went back to normal, and Danes was pulled apart by a baying mob, all the time with a smiling face at ending the guilt.

Brilliant and would maintain the creepiness of his character.
How much longer do you think before we find out who the big bad is? We know PhiCorp is the front, but we don't know the motive for the ovens or who's behind it all.

I have a theory:
- Spoiler:
The morphic event that hit the world at the same time happened in the first episode. Just after the words Torchwood appeared and disappeared from everyones screens at the FBI - this is how it was spread (somehow). Maybe a former Torchwood member is behind it. I dont know enough about Torchwood history to suggest who it is

I only started watching from Children of Earth so can't help on that one. It's an interesting theory though.
- Spoiler:
- I thought by Torchwood appearing it was someone trying to a) Frame Torchwood and make them seem responsible or b) Get Torchwood's attention to what was about to happen. I think whoever was behind the message was an ally of Tochwood who got caught.

- I actually think that it was what caused the event due to the network capabilities.

Well, we should start getting more clues as to who (or what) is ultimately behind Miracle Day, as the team starts trying to unravel the meaning of The Blessing.
I'm expecting a trip to China, to that construction site that guy broke into, just before throwing himself off a skycraper, after telling the Phicorp CEO that there was nothing there. The key must be there.

The "blessing" must be some sort of drug or supernatural thing by the looks of things. We didn't really learn much from this episode though

According to people I work with, in the flashbacks there was a small alien in one of the plant pots. I didn't see it, but I guess that points to it being a supernatural reason.

Re: Torchwood - Miracle Day
Anyone find Gwen (The character) annoying this week? Found the plot somewhat annoying, why would there just be a whole load of explosives lying about? The Chinese agent not being mentioned again- pretty sure that's huge considering Jack even mentioned geography to the black guy. Also Rex just lurting out everything he knows to ths boss of the place, somehow doubt a CIA trained agent would just blurt it all out.
The series is starting to frustrate me because of how drawn out it is, I've only seen a few others episodes of Torchwood before Children of Earth, and the reason that got me interested was because it was a short series where each episode seemed to have something important happen. I'm pretty sure they could have cut down this series down a few episodes, it feels as if it's been on longer than it has!
Looking forward to the last two episodes though, just seen that they're written by Russell T Davies and John Fay, who both worked on Children of Earth.

Enjoyed the episode although I do find some of it far fetched (like Rex just strolling around all the time unnoticed)
I also found Gwen annoying and find some of the plotting ridiculous (like the explosives bit). Also, how can Gwens hubby just drive out - is no one going to give chase? Security is very lax!
Still enjoyed it though - the beginning with the Floor 45 bit was very good. It would have been better if we had seen people in the background of Ernie Husdons scene jumping off too! Would have been darkly comic!
It is going very slow as well - thats 6 episodes in and we have just found out about the "blessing" - Could we have not got to where we are now in 2 episodes? And Jacks mortality has just been forgotten about. As has Danes who didnt make 1 appearance this week.

Agreed that the camp security was a joke, as was the convenient cache of explosives.
Rex Harrison blabbing to the camp administrator, could've been a bit of psychology on his part - an attempt to appeal to his humanity (badly misjudged though it was). Very strange guy. I can't make out what his character is supposed to be. Sometimes he cringes and blubs at the prospect of killing people and at others he's perfectly happy to shoot or strangle them (or burn them alive), if it means saving his own neck.
Still, it was an interesting ending. Whoever's behind the whole thing hacked into the Torchwood network and contacted Gwen though her hi-tech contact lenses, to let her know they've got her hubby, (didn't get far, after all) her kid and mum.

So what did everyone think of last nights episode?
I really enjoyed it but there was way too much man on man action for my liking. It was a sweet story but the whole thing could have been covered off in a 10 minute flashback (as could most of the episodes so far).
Dont forget to ask Rhys/ Kai Owen your questions!
