Greatest Song with a Person's name on it (pick 3)
Music Cup Round 1: Names
First topic message reminder :
Well here we go, the first round of the Music Cup, I won the last edition (boo hiss I hear you cry) so the pressure is on me to retain my title, it’s even harder this time round as well as we have even more people entered and I only get to choose my track until after everyone has picked theirs.
So without further ado lets kick it off.
Pick from the poll above your fave 3 tracks. This round is based on songs that have a person’s name within the title.
My Name Is Jonas - Weezer
Perry Mason - Ozzy Osbourne
Lola - Kinks
Valerie - The Zutons
Dani California - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Hey Jude – The Beatles
Billie Jean - Michael Jackson
Brianstorm- Arctic Monkeys
Mrs Robinson - Simon and Garfunkel
Delilah - Tom Jones
Buddy Holly - Weezer
St Jimmy - Green Day
Jenny was a Friend of Mine - The Killers
Stan - Eminem
Maria - Blondie
Hey Joe - Jimi Hendrix
Voting will close on Monday.

makes no sense bearing in mind Lola is winning.
Sour grapes for Hero.
Hey Jude regularly features in the top ten greatest songs of all time when voted for by critics etc.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_500_Greatest_Songs_of_All_Time
Yet it's losing to one of Chili's Peppers most forgetable songs (sorry Electric but I'm a huge Chili fan and I think Stadium Arcadium was their equivilant of The Phantom Menace)
Re: Music Cup Round 1: Names
Stadium Arcadium was a brilliant album. It was John Frusciante's album to shine on. It would have been better condensed into a one disc with 15-16 tracks on. There was a bit of filler.
Who's The Phantom Menace by??
Hey Jude is pants. I've always thought Hey Jude is pants. It's horrible, cloying, sing-a-long pants.

Voted for Dani California, Valerie and Billie Jean.
Surprised to see no one chose Proud Mary
One of my favourite current songs at the moment is Peggy Sang The Blues but I doubt many others would have heard it

Breaking news: Music Cup cancelled due to increased amount of idiots with lack of decent musical taste.
Re: Music Cup Round 1: Names
I'm usually quite in sync with your music tastes Macc. But I can't abide Paul McCartney. This round is your punishment for appeasing his dopey, pudgy, grinning face.

this isnt the movie cup you know! (well your position after round 1 will seem like it though)
Get on with it!
Re: Music Cup Round 1: Names
Lola I'll give you, I voted for that too and if I had just one vote it'd have gone to that.
But Hey Jude is just a beautiful song, telling John Lennon's son that although his parents are splitting up that everything will be okay, great writing, great melody, great build up.
You all know nothing.
I'm now going to throw some small childs toys out of his buggy.

Re: Music Cup Round 1: Names
I'd just like to say that I think this kind of category is ace as it allows us to choose from our own favoured genre. Last time I had NFC about hip-hop, rap etc. but at least with this sort of category we can all choose what we know.

I agree with you to a degree. I do think though there should genre specific rounds that perhaps take people out of their comfort zone. I'm not a fan of certain types of music (R&B, urban, country & western) but I'll have a go at them.
Re: Music Cup Round 1: Names
Also, if you just pick songs from your own genre, you probably won't see much of a change in your number of votes from round to round, because you'll attract the same voters. Likewise, if Macc keeps picking his horrible McCartney rubbish - he'll keep finding that not many people actually like The Beatles - it's one of life's great mysteries.
I've only ever met one or two people who like the Beatles yet the media always tells me that everyone does.
I think Murdoch's a Beatles fan. i think once his empire has crumbled, so will the Beatles' popularity and album sales, and Ringo Starr will have to start signing autographs again, and Paul McCartney will have to do something he'd be more suited to - like advertising pastry

I don't like many McCartney songs! This and Live & Let Die (and I prefer the GnR version) is probably it!

There must be more! How about some of these?
Yesterday
Let it Be
Eleanor Rigby
All My Loving
Love Me Do
Helter Skelter
The Long and Winding Road
We Can Work it Out
Not saying he was better than Lennon, whose songs I tend to prefer on balance, but he is still an excellent songwriter!

I had to listen to that about 10 times in a row when I was on hold phoning for Watford play-off semi final tickets a few years back.
I now hate it

It took me a little while to realise that you were talking about last weeks round! I was thinking - did Elton John die at 27? Bernie Taupin? Who is the Daniel who died at 27?
