Re: England vs India 1st test debate
India will avoid the follow on but a few more quick wickets will give England a very healthy first innings lead

Not sure the follow on would have been a good idea anyway...rather have India forced to bowl again without any long rest (and still without Zaheer , I think)
Kumar doesn't believe in defence does he?

Chris Tremlett is struggling, hopes he doesn't join Zaheer Khan on the table. Both these sides are missing a qualiy all-rounder.

yeah i guess they are.
look at Broad? sorts the ball out and the bat deserts him.
neither have a real one.

Hopes they send Ishant in, Dravid needs some support, and Ishant has done it in the past. PK has his heart in the right place, good effort from him, the shot he playd to get out may not look great, but he made a decent contribution with the bat at a crucial moment.

Re: England vs India 1st test debate
Wow - just popped back to see if my absence had any effect and find India have lost 3 wickets!!!
Tremlett on the rampage now - though as I type Broad strikes to claim his fourth victim. Kumar gone for 17.
England will have a very handy 1st innings lead now. Hope the immoveable Dravid gets his ton though. He's really held the Indian innings together.

Dravid indeed deserves his ton.
Let him get it, let Broad complete his Michelle and England can get on with some quick second innings runs to give themselves time to win this...
100 for Dravid

Dravid standing proud like the deputy king of lords her is (kp is the king in this match, contrary to Knight calling Dravid the shining light of the match) whilst his footmen fall around him.

Still need one more , Billy but yes , it is (I think we can assume the tenth is coming soon)
Can they bowl them out again , that is the question...this pitch tends to play easy late in the match

Nice one Jimmy and well played Dravid. A thoroughly well-deserved hundred.
Just the one to go now. All in all a very satisfactory day for England.

Heh. You'd think, wouldn't you?
I seem to recall someone saying India's batsmen would batter England's bowlers.
Only one of them managed to do that and fair play to him, he's really earned his place on the honours board.
As I type, Jimmy strikes again to remove Sharma for a duck and India are 286 all out, giving England a 1st innings lead of 188.
Crikey - who'd have put money on that?

Re: England vs India 1st test debate
Good wrap up from Jimmy...no Michelle for Broad , but he'll be happy to be back in town...
Four ducks for India! ...nice lead for England , just need to get through tonight and extend that lead tomorrow to something like 450 as quickly as they can...

not sure on London. Due to be nice in the far west here.
Yep they will have to do really well. if they can get a lead of 400-450 then they can put real pressure on India on a pitch that will be tough on day 5.

Re: England vs India 1st test debate
England only need to make 250 or so to have a good total to defend.
At this stage I'd put money on an England win. Not a lot, to be sure...but the odds are good now. Don't forget India have to bat last on a pitch that will be deteriorating.

England are in a superb position after 2 and a 3/4 days. I think india are lucky not to be even more under the cosh than they are now. If they can bat well now in the next 2 and bit sessions then we will be in an excellent position to push india very hard.

Re: England vs India 1st test debate
India should take some positives from Dravid and Kumar, both on Lords honours list...
And try to make amends in the 2nd innings and salvage a draw at best now...
Eng I think should declare when they lead by 350 runs or so before tea tomorrow...in with a very good chance
What a gem of a test.. .Hope rain don't mess things up....

Just caught the highlights in Singapore and what a masterful performance by The Wall. In any other side he would be the golden boy, but he live in SRT's shadow.. Has he ever complained? No. A true gentleman and a great ambassador for cricket.

Re: England vs India 1st test debate
It depends on the weather, but with time already taken out of the game we can't really afford to lose any more.
I think Botham had it right on Sky commentary, bat normally until lunch. We're effectively 193-0 in a one innings game. With 30 overs meant to be bowled in the 2 hours up to lunch, we should be looking at around 90 runs, so a lead of about 280 at lunch would be good, preferably with only 1 or 2 wickets down. If we have wickets in hand we can push on and look to be 400 ahead by tea. That would set India 100 runs a session, a challenging prospect, especially without Sehwag, and should give us enough time to bowl them out.
The Lord's pitch holds up well, in 2009 Australia hit 406 all out chasing 551. In 2010 England got Bangladesh following on and they made 382 all out over days 4 and 5, before England knocked off 163-2 in 35 overs. This year against Sri Lanka we made 335 in 78 overs on days 4 and 5 before Sri Lanka made 127-3. India have a stronger batting line-up than all those sides, so I would worry about giving them 4 sessions to chase 350.

Re: England vs India 1st test debate
India maybe to stronger, but they do have a rookie at the top of the order, whilst guys like Gambhir and Tendulkar haven't played a lot of 1st class cricket in recent times, as was displayed from their dismissals.robbo277 wrote:It depends on the weather, but with time already taken out of the game we can't really afford to lose any more.

Hi Longhopmerchant - welcome to the cricket board. I'd be happier with 450 lead around tea tomorrow. Providing we have wickets in hand at lunch tomorrow we should be able to press on then...
