Re: England vs India 1st test debate
I think that its more about consuming time here instead of runs. England have already a decent lead but they wont want to give India enough time and overs to get it.

Re: England vs India 1st test debate
I think there's roughly 155 overs left in the game, 2 will be lost because of the changeover.

Re: England vs India 1st test debate
surely with old smashers and the likes you need 400 for them to question winning at all Billy?

or you need to take time out of the game.
4 sessions and 400 would at least be something they'l have to work for.
anyone know the what's considered a good fourth innings target at Lords?

I think that if Ebgland hold out for at least another half a session then the will be in a very strong position trebbs

Highest ever 4th innings score at Lords was 406 a/o for Australia during the 09 Ashes. Highest 4th innings score for India at Lords is 397 a/o which was in 2002.

Re: England vs India 1st test debate
That would seem reasonably Billy.
Been a poor day.
The only positive is that they at least have a lead and the bowlers can see there is something in this pitch.
What is the highest total India chased down in their recent Windies tour?
Forecast is nice for tomorrow so looks like they'll be chasing under their favourite conditions.

Re: England vs India 1st test debate
oh dear.. so it's Indias game then.
Hard to imagine how any team can mess it up so badly from such a good position but if anyone can, our boys can. it's been a speciality for decades.
to get 406 i'm guessing the Aussies had a long time to bat and a lot of runs to chase?
I vaguely recall it now, we were pretty worried they were winning it and then finally broke.

Yeah they needed 522 off of nearly 2 full days of cricket. We eventually bowled them out on Day Five but it was close.

Re: England vs India 1st test debate
Back again. Amazing Grand Prix...that's all I'll say in case anyone is watching the highlights later.
Mightily relieved to see Prior and Broad have come to England's rescue and patched up the sinking ship. Bravo lads!
Maybe...just maybe we can still win this...

Lead looks a lot better if Gambhir can't bat. Not sure if Tendulkar could open if he missed time?

Re: England vs India 1st test debate
The type of innings I wasn't convinced Prior could deliver. Great 50 just when we needed it. If he can kick on and get the lead to 450+ plus just after tea we're in luck.

Re: England vs India 1st test debate
I must say that is really good from MP. This situation was set-up for the whole pack to fold like they used to and he showed some real spine and character.
It's still too low at the moment, looking at those records i guess India will be confident of anything less than 400 but at least it starts to giver the bowlers something to bowl at.

Broad has more than held his own in this partnership as well. His contribution has helped Prior immensly.

Re: England vs India 1st test debate
They had something to bowl at before we started batting. Now 2 of their batsmen will be less than 100%

Re: England vs India 1st test debate
both fair points.
If 402 is the highest ever here then i suspect 400 is might be considered a reasonable challenge even for the worlds best.

dhoni is defensive captain, harbajhan is defensive spinner, and they rely on only a few of their players

Not having much luck on that score, are they eirebilly? Wonder if they'll have to call up replacemnets for the 2nd Test?
England's lead 362 at tea...a bit short of what I predicted, but then I wasn't expecting the collapse. Would think only another 50-60 is required before the declaration.

Re: England vs India 1st test debate
india really do have health problems here.
Botham and Holding think Eng need 420. Well, they say 420 would put it out of sight for India.

Re: England vs India 1st test debate
I doubt Eng could get that high with the way India have been bowling.
and they've run out of the kind of batsmen that can really give it a whack after Prior.

Good steady 50 from Prior - a birt more restrained than usual (just the 2 boundaries). Lets hope Broad can match him.

That's 6 runs off the opening over after tea - the lead is now a vast 368.
