Oh and QPR have agreed a one year deal with Rio Ferdinand for £3.6m a year in wages.
Honestly you'd thought they'd have learnt from the first time

Arry's going to bust another club, before saying "no one could have kept us up"!

HBA - Id love him, gamechanger.
The O'Grady who scored 15 goals for Barnsley last year? Worth a punt.

one season doesn't make a player, other than barnsley the guy hasnt scored anywhere he's been other than rochdale when they were in league 2.
he's a 1 in 5 striker

Ben Arfa might be worth a punt, but as John has said he's quite "out of shape" shall we put it, and probably the most selfish player I've seen play.
Also doesn't exactly work hard tracking back. Think Jarvis/Downing are better all round packages already tbh

Cracking bit business by Newcastle selling Debuchy and replacing him with somebody who is better, cheaper and younger.

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
Basically your right back (Demel) better be good because Hatem has one eye on pies & the other eye on only going forwards. As I say, I reckon we will be offering him out quite cheap just to get rid of him & out of the group. The fact he couldn't motivate himself in a WC year, summed it up. Great player on his day, those days are maybe two or three times in a season.
Completely agree Hammer. £5m for a Dutch International right back, cracking business. Whoever puts the valuations on Feyenoord players, clearly needs sacking. What was it, £6m for Martins Indi to Porto.

De Vrij is being touted as available for roughly the same price too, none of them are world class but can still do a job for any team. You'd expect to pay three times that for English alternatives.

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
Meh, only player in that team worth watching once Cabaye went and Pardew was too scared to get him in the middle of things. But least you've let me know who our right back is But what we're missing is the spark, that player that isn't predictable and opponents don't just zone into a pattern of play. Downing and Jarvis are far too traditional to both play. Our system next year will ideally be based on one traditional winger and then one attacking midfielder who drifts wide. Downing shows signs of tucking in well on the right but doesnt have any instinct for goal so we lose that threat.
Not sure Janmaat is better than Debuchy. In fact, I don't think he is at all, and I think if he was any good he'd be a Man United player.

I trust very little of those Dutch defenders to be any good when LVG was desperate to have 5 at the back and would happily play a workhorse Kuyt in there.

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
According to some Sky Sports reporter, we're on the verge of signing a big-name striker. Whether that means plenty of characters or someone who is actually well known and good I don't know!
Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
Feyenoord have just about got themselves back to their feet after some financial troubles, and all those players were coming in to the last year of their contracts. Better to cash in than let them walk at the end of the season.John wrote:Completely agree Hammer. £5m for a Dutch International right back, cracking business. Yeah, I've never watched a game outside of the Prem and mainly just MOTD. Everything you say will be right and I'm just a blind fool cos I don't agree with you

You bang on about this Dutch back five when LVG only used it during the world cup and hadn't used it prior to that, he lost his midfield linchpin and changed tactics because of that.

They couldn't play his standard system cos of one man and now you're going to use that as a defence of the players? Carry on, pal, its funny. About as funny as the pant wetting every time Van Gaal is criticised because he's been your manager a day.

Dolph mightn't like the Dutch for some reason but the defenders are still dodgy.

Strootman is far and away the best midfielder the Dutch have but do carry on thinking otherwise that the player central to how they played wouldn't be missed and couldn't be replaced.

Maybe a little off topic, but Phillip Lahm has retired from international football.

surprised at that news, he's only 30. would have liked him to have a crack at the euro's at least, try to do what both spain and france did and hold both at the same time. 32 would have been a better age to go out, got a feeling he might make himself available after all the pesky qualifying games are out of the way

I think theres something to be said for going out on top, at the absolute pinnacle of world football.
Rather that than play too long and be remembered most as a shadow of my former self.

In other news, Leicester are continuing the trend of spending stupid money on good Championship strikers with a club record fee of 7m agreed for Ulloa.

He himself recognised that this semi final was the best he ever played though. On that day he was maybe worldclass but his average Villa performance doesnt come close to that. Easier to concentrate on defending against one player (even if it is Messi) when you have 5 defenders, less space to cover.

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
The thing with Vlaar is, for start I dont think he's as bad as some people make out.
As much as it pains me to say, when hes playing with jokers like Clarke & Baker, he has had to pretty much work as to centre backs.
So yes he has had some poor performances, also some good ones.
He had a good world cup and hopefully he can bring that back to VP this season.
There is alot on his shoulders when he's playing with sh1te players.
Hopefully Okore(jury still out on him), can stay fit and him and Vlaar do well at the back.
We will see.

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
Cole was probably a better left back in their respective best positions, but I think Phillipp edges it because other than the best right back, he flirted with being the best left back in the world as well. He was also a class defensive midfielder.

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
Debuchy was a liability & couldn't defend. He was a a part of the time we were being thrashed 6-0 by Liverpool, 3-0 to Sunderland etc. He was a joke defender. Have to laugh Debuchy commenting about enjoying being back in the Champions League. The last time he was there, with Lille, he was a part of the defence that got banged for six by Bayern Munich. £5m for Janmaat is good business, especially as we've made £5m, selling Debuchy for £10m. If he's great, then great, if he's average, well it's only £5m.
I also hate when people think because LVG doesn't sign the player from his WC squad, they are immediately labelled rubbish.

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
I think you've done fantastic business myself with Janmaat and with the accusitions as a whole there's a lot more to be positive about than I thought there would be for Newcastle. Just have to make sure they don't switch off from Jan onwards.

Can we all take a minute to appreciate Yaya Toure as he has graciously decided that he will honour his contract with City
I think after they forgot his birthday and didn't lavish him with gifts that for him to state that he will still play for the club that pays him his paltry wages shows what a great human being he is.

that got to a semi & won the third place playoff & had robben, rvp, sneijder, huntellaar, wijnajdum, depay and other young talent etc. just because strootman was not there & you had never heard of or seen the young defence before, either side of vlaar, you just label them rubbish. people make it out LVG performed miracles. garbage. he had an abundance of good quality players & a near world class duo in robben/rvp.

Outside of Robben, RVP and Sneijder (who is past his best) he had a very limited squad and lost his best midfielder weeks before the tournament. No recognised goal keeper and started with a Villa centre half and De Guzman in midfield. It was a limited squad.
I'm sure these younger lads are solid enough players but compared to the German and Argentina squads he had bugger all to work with (less said about Brazil the better).

To be fair to Yaya, whatever has gone on behind the scenes, he didn't shirk his load at City, and having a ton of cash dropped into your account every week doesn't mean you have to like your employers.
