Mario Balotelli - what are your thoughts
Just found a cracking piece from the Football Blog that I have reproduced below.
It would be great to hear your thoughts on Mario and if you get a chance, check out the original article and site - http://www.the-football-blog.co.uk/i-just-cant-hate-mario
Our group of Mario Balotelli sympathisers welcomes its newest member with Matt Hines the latest blogger to come to the defence of the controversial Italian striker.
Despite his brattish behaviour, his apparent lack of care for irritating fans of his own club (most notably wearing a Milan shirt whilst playing for Inter) and his god awful hair cut, I just cannot stop loving the fact that Mario Balotelli is playing in the Premier League.
Admittedly, the dart flinging at the youth team may have been a tad too far, but has any player brought so much entertainment to the Premier League in just a year?
Paulo Di Canio, Fabien Barthez and Eric Cantona were eccentric, but Mario is a cut above. Remember Wayne Rooney’s well-documented liaisons with an expensive lady of the night? Mario bumped into her in a classy Manchester restaurant and proceeded to blow raspberries and chant “ROONEY, ROONEY!” Quality!
Then there are some of his more noble accolades such as the time when he won £25,000 in a casino and gave a chunk of it to a guy he always buys the Big Issue from. Following this he was stopped whilst driving home with the rest of his winnings on his passenger seat and when questioned as to why he had it there he simply replied “because I’m very, very rich”.
We can hate ‘over-paid’ footballers all we like but would any of you have acted that much differently if you were a 20-year-old millionaire in a Maserati?
Of course, it gets better. When a young fan asked Mario for his autograph outside the City training ground, the player asked why he was not in school and the youngster replied that he was being bullied. Balotelli proceeded to drive to the boy’s house, pick up his mother and escort them both to the school to confront the headmaster. Balotelli was said to have mediated while the two boys sorted out their differences.
Now we’ve all read about his various training ground scuffles, but my favourite Mario moment was the Balotelli vs. bib bout in Kiev, when the firebrand repeatedly struggled to put on his attire. It was pure comedy gold from the big man.
I write all this in response to the latest wave of criticism which has been directed towards the young Italian after his failed ‘trick shot’ in a friendly against LA Galaxy. Yes it was a bit silly, but you have to remember, to him, an exhibition match against Galaxy is like a kick about in the park to us, and if I had the confidence and ability that he has, I’d give it a try as well.
I mean, if Messi had attempted it, I can guarantee the world would be applauding him for playing ‘the Barcelona way’.
Personally I think it’s time we gave super Mario a break. He’s had a very tough upbringing, and is still racially abused every time he pulls on the blue of Italy. And besides, in a nation where Alan Shearer is considered a TV ‘personality’, surely we need as much Balotelli as we can get?

Re: Mario Balotelli - what are your thoughts
I agree that the game needs personalities, but i don't think it needs another arrogant, petulant little upstart. To compare him with Cantona and Di Canio is sacrilegious, those keys had class and were well respected for their incredible levels of skill.
Mario might well turn out to be of a similar quality, for if he continues to behave in this way, I will struggle to appreciate his obvious talent, in the same way that I can't stand the Danny Cipriani's and Gavin Henson's of this world.

He is hilarious though! It doesn't matter whether you think he's a good player or not, the amount of funny stories about him in just one year in the league is brilliant.

Yeah - comparing a self-confessed fascist to an ongoing victim of fascism would be a bit foolhardy.
I think he's good value for the Premier League. Sure, he's brash and arrogant, but gestures such as the ones mentioned in the article show that he does have some element of groundedness (is that a word?)

Talented footballer , but off field antics seem to over shadow on field on performance . He's young and should learn so time will tell , needs to grow up .

I like that way he got Rio Ferdinand's back up after the F.A Cup semi last season.
That won him my vote.

Re: Mario Balotelli - what are your thoughts
the guy who wrote that is a fool (if not a very biased city fan), if your going to be an idiot off the pitch you better back it up on it. cantona/di canio could do that. mario hasnt exactly light it up yet. alergic to grass etc etc all just stinks of excuses, cant see him being a major player in the prem hasnt got the right attitude
what the author of that artcile doesnt realise is football is about what happens on the pitch not off it, there are plenty of cranks off the pitch who wont be remembered, we remember cranks like maradonna, cantona because despite there personanlity they were brillant footballers. mario is just a crank at the minute

Re: Mario Balotelli - what are your thoughts
I think he is great, a genuine character who has loads of talent as well. People need to remember he is only 20/21, how many players past or present were as good as him at a similar age? Not too many.
I'd much rather have him than some damp "We'll take each game as it comes, I'm just glad to get the three points" type.
I think he will be a great player, whether or not that happens in the PL, who knows, but I'm sure he will screw his head on soon, I think a lot of it is an act to get attention and see how far he can push things.

Re: Mario Balotelli - what are your thoughts
I’m amazed by the “talented player” and “he’ll be a class act” type comments as to date he’s shown us absolutely nothing. Seriously, in an entire season of football I can’t think of one thing he’s done to suggest that he is anything other than mediocre............perhaps the whole bad boy persona is a little bit of misdirection as without it we’d be talking about him signing for the likes of Blackpool, Birmingham et al.

Re: Mario Balotelli - what are your thoughts
A club of city's size shouldn't be putting up with the child like behaviour of Balotelli. For the wages he's most likely on, he should be cleaning Mancini's shoes with his tongue, not disrespecting him and the club at near enough every game. If I were City, i'd sell him, they don't need to worry about making a loss - the team would benefit more from not having an attitude like his around them.
Personally, I love watching his antics, they're brilliant. But, then i'm really not a city fan.

I personally like the guy.
I also believe if he can sort his temperment out he could be one of the best strikers in the world.
Hope he stays at City.

Re: Mario Balotelli - what are your thoughts
I love the guy, just some of the stuff he does
He helped a kid getting bullied.
In a restaraunt, he saw that hooker Rooney pumped, so he started shouting "Rooney, Rooney" at her.
He gave a tramp £10K.
Throwing darts a people cos he was bored.
Refused to go on the Man City team bus, cos his dog wasnt allowed.
Throwing water ballons at an Italian FA officials meeting.
Got stopped by the police and he had £30k on him, they asked why, he said, cos i can.
Legend.

I cant stand the guy, and please lets not compare him to Di Canio or Cantona.
Ive seen nothing from Mario to tell me he up there at all. IF he was that good regardless of his attitude...he would be winning games singled handledly...like Messi, or Ronaldo.
Mario is just a jumped up chump...but hey fair enough i wish i was on his money for being a chump!

Re: Mario Balotelli - what are your thoughts
Ha, some of that stuff in the article was quality... Giving the homeless guy the money was hilarious! Also I think him helping the kid out who was being bullied is quality shows he is actually a pretty decent guy. It's easy to judge him on everything bad he's ever done.
To be fair I'm 19 and I could sort of see myself acting like a complete tool aswell, thinking I'm the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Listen he is quality... clearly you can tell, he only has had 1 season in the Premier League, let's be fair not every single footballer can say he had a great first season especially someone that is only 20 years of age.
It's very harsh to compare him to Maradonna and what has he ever said to make people consider comparing him to him? I don't think he has ever said he's the greatets footballer ever. I don't like how we always say yeah but he's not as good as this legend, take him on his own merit and don't compare him to others, then perhaps you won't have such skewed opinions on players.

Re: Mario Balotelli - what are your thoughts
I like him, and I also respect his abilities as a footballer. He doesn't have the longevity of a Di Canio or Cantona yet, but it's only his second season in the PL now, so lets just see how he has settled. I think he is clearly highly talented for a young player -- he was playing for Inter as a teenager, so he must have something special there.

Re: Mario Balotelli - what are your thoughts
I'm not really sure how Di Canio and Cantona have become such a great comparison for Balotelli?!? Di Canio was hardly world class and as good as Cantona was, 5 years at Utd from the age of 25(?) was the highlight of an otherwise very average career. Messi is a different class and bears very little comparison to any other player for a very long time with so many achievements at such a young age. Ronaldo was also just a potentially good player at 20 years old, although a year later he seemed to accelerate in fulfilling his potential.
Balotelli is a young player with bags of potential and is not really any more or less arrogant than a lot of other players that are young. In fact, a lot of older players hardly set good examples with Cashly and his air gun and the rest of the England set up with their penchant for ladies of the night. Don't really see another side to them though so maybe Balotelli showing some humility should be admired rather than his arrogance be singled out in an industry full to the brim of arrogance.

Re: Mario Balotelli - what are your thoughts
I think they are selected as comparisons because they have similar eccentric personalities allied with their talents.
I don't think Cantona can be bracketed as 'average' -- he won trophies, received international recognition and is still a recognisable ambassador for football.

He won trophies during a 6 year spell in England but did very little outside of that and this was the point that I was making - not exactly up there with the most glittering CV's in Europe. As for their personalities, Cantona could back up his eccentricity/arrogance on the pitch but the same could not be said of Di Canio. It was also a different era of football where money was not as full flowing - since that era, the vast sums thrown at youngsters has bred a whole generation of arrogant footballers and Balotelli is no better or worse than the rest of them. He has been singled out despite also showing a very generous and thoughtful side to his personality when in reality, these acts that contrast the rest of the arrogant football industry should be a better way of highlighting him than looking at his arrogance.

Re: Mario Balotelli - what are your thoughts
Cantona won trophies in France too, the only other country he played in. Not that it matters, he won trophies for a sustained period at one of the most recognisable clubs in the world -- not many can say that.
I'm on your side with Balotelli though, I don't think he is worse than many others that I could name, but he gets attention for his genral anarchic behaviour on and off the pitch.

I actually think he is quite refreshing for the game - I'd rather see his anarchic behaviour in the media than another predictable headline about an England International fighting/seeing prostitutes/cheating on his wife etc. He at least shows a degree of intelligence in is mischief...

Hehe...
I'm not too sure it's attitude problems. I think he just has an attitude that is a bit different to others. He actually seems like a pretty decent bloke and as real as you can get for me.
