Re: Week Four Predictions
Wigan Athletic 2 - 2 Manchester United
Klose ----------------- Higuain
Sneijder ------------- Messi
Two excellent sides both with solid defences and strong attacks. Utd's Argentine quartet combined well and posed a constant threat but Wigan's CB pairing of Pepe and Terry coped admirably with that threat. At the other end, Sneijder and Iniesta pulled the strings for the home side. Utd led twice but Wigan pulled level twice to earn a share of the spoils.
Newcastle United 1 - 1 Manchester City
RvP ----------------------- Eto'o
Another close battle between two fairly even sides. City probably edge things up front with the greater threat but it is close and with Newcastle roared on by the home crowd things were always going to be tougher for the visitors. They did take the lead late on in the first half after a good spell of possession and pressure but failed to add to that advantage with Newcastle equalising on the hour. After that the match could have gone either way but ended with a point each.
Stoke City 1 - 0 Liverpool
Villa
Again two evenly matched teams both with similar stengths and weaknesses. In such close matches things can often be decided by who has the deadliest finisher. Stoke have David Villa and he scored the only goal of the match. His counterpart Pato will get his goals but today he was unable to respond. Narrow home win.
Sunderland 1 - 2 Fulham
Benzema --------- Pedro
--------------------- Schwein
Hard earned away win for Fulham against a committed Sunderland side but one whose Italian central trio lost out marginally to the visitors run by Schweinsteiger. In truth the wide men made the real difference where Fulham possess the more regobnised wingers. The key was getting the ball to them and utilising their pace and skill. Fulham did this to greater effect and despite a late comeback attempt by Sunderland, ran out narrow winners.
Tottenham Hotspur 0 - 0 Everton
Plenty of endeavour and good attacking play but both defences held firm today leaving both sides with a point. Both sides have their star players and they often matched up against each other with the Bale/Ramos battle a particularly interesting spectacle. Both sides had chances but both keepers were on fine form to chalk up a clean sheet each.
WBA 0 - 1 Chelsea
------------ Ozil
WBA have the better defence overall with their CB pairing a nice combination although they may struggle against more direct sides. Chelsea are not direct though and like to play their football. Up front is where the battle was won where Chelsea saw more of the ball and provided the greater supply to their forwards. Albion have two excellent wingers but struggled to get them enough into the game to provide chances for their front two. Despite that it took a top strike from Ozil to separate the sides as he stroked home from the edge of the box with twenty minutes remaining.
Aston Villa 0 - 2 Blackburn Rovers
------------------- Drogba
------------------- Simao
Battle of Hodge and Hodgey at Villa Park. New Villa manager Hodge has done an excellent job since taking over making some good signings and strengthening the starting XI. I particularly like the addition of Ballack and Ramires to anchor midfield, a strong combination. However, overall they were no match for their opponents especially going forward and a goal either side of the break saw the points go back to Lancashire.
