all blacks will at least make it to the semis as their 1/4 final will be against either england, scotland or argentina (not exactly hard teams for nz, no disrespect) most likely scotland, then semi will play either france or england (possibly bogey there) otherwise fairly simple job of beating wales in the final

I will be surprised if anybody gets within ten points of New Zealand.
At the moment they are second to none and I believe that they are a class above their nearest rivals.

They should win it, the squad is just so compact with stars.

There's a bit of deja vu in this discussion - given their superiority over most teams over the years, NZ have been touted as favourites to win the WC on each occasion, but have only won it once -
I just wonder whether the weight of expectation from the NZ public will be too much for them.

If we are gonna talk about choking maybe we could broaden the field and
have a look at how all the big teams have choked at some stage of a rwc.
Or from another perspective how favored teams have been upset. After all isnt
the joy of sport seeing an unexpected result (unless its your team being knocked off)

OzT I think Mortlock was just as guilty of choking as he had that kick to win it with 2 mins to go.

You're right Disney, though was not filled with confidence I have to say when I was watching him line the kick up.

Anyway, that day England played better than us, and deserved to win. Had great hope after Lote's try, but we seem to lose all shape and lines in the backs after and never broke thru again.

No worries, time this year, if we meet up, to make amends!!!

1987,1991. We didn't choke, the sports world choked us.
1999 we took Oz to extra time and got drop goaled by Larkham
2003 We never got into the game, NZ slaughtered us.

I can safely say we are yet to choke at the RWC

Must admit Biltong the 03 Boks were probably the worst SA team I've seen. Though how do you think you would have gone in the first two?

I think looking at the '87 world cup, NZ were streets ahead of everyone, depending in which pool we would have been we could have made the final, based on what happened in 1986.

1991, I can't really say, I don't have any reference points to work from.

do you think it is possible for s.a to not make it out of their group as i heard the last performance against aus was terrible- what i am basically saying is do you think you will lose to fiji, samoa or wales?

Since that Lions series we have lost to Ireland, France, Scotland, Australia 5 times, NZ 4 times and beaten france, Wales 3 times, Ireland, England twice, australia, NZ 3 times, Scotland.

By my count that is 50%, and by my standard 25% below where we should be

Welshy to be honest with you I don`t expect us to lose any pool games.

No matter how poor our coach is, the reality is our players didn`t play for 7 weeks prior to that test. We weren`t poor. We controlled the first half, blundered 3 try scoring opportunities, didn't take three kickable penalties and missed a sitter. We lost 1 lineout, got mullered in a few scrums when John Smit moved to prop. We had 50% of possession and territory.

We didn`t execute well and ran out of steam due to not being match fit.

Come rugby world cup the players will be good enough to win their pool

Irrespective of our current dillema, between all the teams in our pool they only have 1 win against us and that is Wales 12 years ago

The tri nations teams will always be favourites when they play anyone else. They're the 3 best teams in the world. But there's normally at least one tri nations side that looses to European opposition at the World Cup. At the moment South Africa look the most vulnerable to me. Maybe I'll change my opinion on that after seeing more of the trinations. But Wales in the group could do it. They have a strong scrum. Their new backrowers are better than anything they've had for years. Their biggest weakness is a complete lack of creativity, but on paper they have the players to score tries. Maybe they'll find inspiration in New Zealand?

Can't wait to see the game this weekend. NZ look a bit disrupted in the back row, and the back line could either be lethal or terrible. It should be a real battle of styles, i'd expect SA to improve 50% on last week's showing, as both NZ and Aus did on their second outings of the year with the settled experienced line up.

SA looked good in patches early on last week, but seemed to suffer from match fitness in the concentration department later on in the game.

What's up with the amount of support the AB's get down there Biltong?
