I think mental fortitude also can be seen as being a hard man.
In that case my mental fortitude puts me up there.
My team has been poor for a while now, the Irish and Welsh all want to beat us, the Wallabies and all Blacks are our biggest rivals
And i fight the lone crusade for my team.
How hard do you think that is.

Re: Hardest human being ever?
George North gets a look in for being a winger but Jordan Crane doesn't get a look in? He got MOTM last year in the last GP final whilst playing with a foot injury, so much so that on the tour of the pitch with the trophy he had removed his boot to show a blood soaked heel (he played all 80 mins). This season he completed the Churchill Cup (every game, as captain) with a broken bone in his foot. He doesn't get to lounge around on the wing either he is grafting in the tight.

Not the biggest or strongest guys in the world, but for extreme physical endurance and mental strength:
Vidmantas Urbonas, ultra-distance athlete. Winner of a number of world championships in various events, but most impressively the record holder for the Double Deca Ironman (76km swim, 3,600km bike, 844km run, squeezing in an hour's sleep max at a time), 18 days, 5 hours, 21 minutes. He's also the only man to have swum across the Baltic Sea (250km), which he did aged 50.
Serge Girard, an ultramarathon runner. Trans-USA (LA-NY, 4,597km in 52d, 23h, 20m, 87km/day, aged 44), trans-South America (Lima-Rio, 5,235km in 73d, 3h, 40m, 71km/day, aged 48), trans-Africa (Dakar-Cairo, 8,295km in 123d, 2h, 40m, 67km/day, aged 51), trans-Eurasia (Paris-Tokyo, 19,097km in 262 days, 73km/day, aged 53) record holder and former trans-Australia (Perth-Sydney, 3,755km in 46d, 23h, 12m, 80km/day, aged 46) record holder. He also holds the record for the longest distance covered in a year, 27,011km around the EU, 74km/day, aged 57.
Yiannis Kouros, an ultramarathon runner. Holder of every men's outdoor road world record from 100 to 1,000 miles (10d, 10h, 30m for the latter) and every road and track record from 12 hours to 6 days (645 miles for the latter). He also won the Spartathlon (246km) each of the four occasions he competed, setting what are still the four fastest times in it's history (his fastest, 20h 25m, being 2h quicker than any other competitor has managed in the event's history).

I read a story Jake white was telling about Schalk burger. They played a match in australasia and he injured his neck in the process, but the didn't notice it until he sat on the plane for some hours. He couldn't move his head before he realised he got injured.

Excellent, but the real reason Schalk Burger looks under his bed, he is afraid Richie will steal his balls. ( rugby balls)

He can't have been all that - no VC, so obviously just a wimp...
More seriously, did any of you see the documentary last nght about the ex-squadies trekking to the North Pole? Two guys missing an arm each, one guy with only one leg and a guy who broke his back and was told he'd never walk again.
My wife met them at a conference a couple of months ago, where they were giving the keynote presentation on one day (and Michael Palin gave a presentation the other day) - apparently a really good bunch of guys as well as being as determined as ...

Re: Hardest human being ever?
Yes some guys will go that extra mile and others just get greedy.
We had a charity event in Porthcawl a couple of years back in aid of Help for Heroes and we contacted on of the guys from my battalion who has become a bit of a celebrity.
The response we had from him was that we should contact his agent to discuss a fee.
I was one of the guys who pulled him out of the burning Sir Galahad I don't regret that of course but he has gone down in my estimation

Paddy Mayne was all those things. In the Second World War he took over the SAS after its founder, David Stirling, was captured. He also commanded a Special Raiding Squadron. He took part in many dangerous operations. His decorations included 4 DSOs and he was recommended for a VC after one action. This was turned down for reasons of army politics, a fact officially recognised some years later. He's been called the most outstanding Allied fighting soldier of the Second World War. As for being hard, well, he obviously was and apparently not a man to cross even if you were on his side.

Re: Hardest human being ever?
Yeah have to agree it's Blair Mayne (or Paddy Mayne). Talk of him getting a posthumous VC which I think may make him the most decorated soldier of WWII. Also I think the political reasons for him not getting the VC in first place may have been because he punched a superior officer. Is said that when they went behind enemy lines with SAS in North Africa he dismantled planes with his bare hands when they had run out of explosives.
As well as what has been said above he was Irish Universties boxing champion and a British and Irish Lion as well as an Irish International. One story from Lions tour in South Africa goes that one night following the dinner after a test match he went missing. Other players looked for him but gave up and went to bed. In the morning there was a Sprinbok impaled on one of the flag poles outside the hotel and the story goes that good oul Paddy had decided to go out hunting with a tribe all night. Just how true this is I am not sure but good story all the same
You can get a documentary about him from the History Channel on You Tube!
Am tellin ya guys, Paddy all the way

There's a lot of stories about Burger. In 2006 he played most of a game against Scotland with an injury so bad he needed his neck fused.
