So were Duran Duran. Girls On Film was 1981 and that was the first feature length promo video (to be promptly banned/censored). They also had their videos done by Russell Mulcahy (Mad Max film director) in the early '80s who did a feature length video promo film for them. It was made in 1984 but i'm not sure if was out before or after Thriller. Madonna was another who used the medium of video to establish herself at the same time too.

Dyre - no, that song would've been about three years too late. The first video ever was "Video Killed The Radio Star" by Buggles followed by one Pat Benatar.

Just out of interest where did Swagger Jagger get in the charts?
If it reached number one it truly is end of days and I shall be packing tinned goods and relocating my wife and baby badger to a hut in Siberia!!

Dyre - I am a massive music nerd. Used to avidly read the music papers and listen to the radio all the time. I worked in a record shop for years as well. You had to be a bit of a nerd then cause you'd get people coming in going "Oh, I heard this song on the radio right, and this was bloke singing about finishing with his girlfirend cause she couldn't help him? Something about going mad...."
Having said that, I'm a bit lost on modern music, because I haven't worked in a record shop for years now, and don't really follow it as much as I used to.

Greetings fellow nerd!
I haven't really got a clue about mainstream music as I stopped listening to Radio 1 or caring about the charts since Top Of The Pops went off air.
That said, I am a regular reader of music mags like Classic Rock and Metal Hammer. Those and the free CDs that come with them are good way of finding new bands. A lot of it is rubbish but theres usually the odd gem in there. DAB radio stations like Planet Rock and Absolute, as well as internet stations like Totalrock.com are good for keeping up with what new in genres other than rap, R&B and X-Factor rubbish.

Re: The Best Music Videos Ever
I listen to Radio 2 in work which isn't as bad as Radio 1 in that they play new stuff from different sources, not just the usual charty guff. Sometimes I've accidentally come across a new band or track through TV or a friend on Facebook. Only two mags I subscribe to now too - Rugby World and the Radio Times. Geez I must be getting old!!

I think the part at the start of the song where Sting sings "I want my MTV" was added when they found out it would be the first vid. Cracking tune.
Best video i've seen in ages is the Black Key's - howlin' for you
It's done like a movie trailer, very good.

Re: The Best Music Videos Ever
In all honesty, the best videos this year have to be:
Kanye West & Jay-Z - otis
Chris Brown - yeah *3
Jessie J - price tag
Pink - F*ckin Pefect
Chris Brown - look at me now
Kanye West - all of the lights
Lady Gaga - born this way
Wiz Khalifa - black and yellow
Adele - rolling in the deep
Cee-lo - f**k you.
Also Beyonce - run the world. Not the best I know but deserves a mention for the choreography.
Video director of the year is Collin Tilley no doubt. He has 3 videos up for VMAS, and the videos he has directed have a total of 200+ million views. Only 23 years old as well.

True, the Money For Nothing video does really look its age now, but I still think its cool for its uniqueness. Was also revolutionary for its time.
Also chuffed at being at least partly right.
