sunday comp - bogey competition
Playing on sunday in a BOGEY COMPETITION
Never played in one, is your handicap taken into account? And does this favour high or low handicappers or nobody in particular.
Can anyone tell me more?
Regards

Re: sunday comp - bogey competition
Essentially matchplay against the course. Your handicap is applied as per stableford, so on a shot hole your nett score is one lower than your gross and then compared to the par of the hole. Nett par is a half, bogey or worse a loss and birdie or better a win.
I like the format, but haven't played one for years. Look for a winning score about +3 or +4, where stableford might be 41 or 42, as a nett eagle is no better than a nett birdie (and indeed a 1 pointer is the same as a blob).

Re: sunday comp - bogey competition
I have played in 2 of these this year, theres only one flaw with this format & thats if you birdie a stroke hole you get nothing for it, as a par would have one you the hole !!. i went round in one under my handicap to the card, but in the bogey comp level due to birdieng the last which was a stroke hole. I think it suits the golfer that may have a couple to a few really bad holes per round as you only lose the hole irrespect of the score at the hole. !!

Re: sunday comp - bogey competition
Played in first one this year. Weird to get used to but although i had a bit of a mare' in general didnt end up going up 0.1 as I would have if it was a normal competition due to the format.
Think I actually got cut in the end, as it turned out I had a few birdies on none stroking holes and won a few of the holes I got my strokes.

Bogey tends to suit steady players who don't make big numbers on any hole. Bogey winners are usually 'steady eddies playing off about 12' type golfers.

Re: sunday comp - bogey competition
N1C - SJ captured it pretty well in his early post on the thread. It's matchplay against the course. Every net birdie or better wins you a hole, every net bogey or worse loses you a hole. Total up your wins against your losses and that gives you your result. Sometimes this will be positive, sometimes it will be negative. This type of game rewards the steady eddie type of player rather than the one that fluctuates wildly.

Re: sunday comp - bogey competition
I remember looking at an honours board at Hadley Wood i think it was. There was a 36 hole bogey competition where the winner was usually 4 or 5 up. Sometimes 6 up, sometimes 3 up, except for one year when the winner was 10 down.
It was sometime during the 1980s I think - must have been quite a weekend weatherwise.

George it was 1989 mate. The berlin wall was being knocked down that weekend and only a couple of blokes played in the comp, whilst the rest stayed and huddled round the front window of rumbalows watching it on the telly. Before your time...

Re: sunday comp - bogey competition
I've never played in a bogey competition - never really fancied it, but after reading this thread I think I'll have a go next time one comes up at my club

Re: sunday comp - bogey competition
played a round today and would have been -4
same course last sunday would have been +8, beleive it or not
I think I will equate on sunday to around 25pts stableford equivalent so maybe -3 if I am lucky (hope I have got this the right way round)
