Re: Ign review of Rugby World Cup 2011 xbox/ps3
Developer HB Studios has essentially taken its EA Sports-published Rugby 08 title from the PlayStation 2, eliminated the Tri-Nations, Six Nations, Super 14 (or Super 15 as it would be now) and basically every other tournament that isn't the World Cup, applied a minimalistic HD graphical overhaul, added perfunctory online support, and pushed it out the door. Which, as a full-priced release, just isn't acceptable.
"Calling the game Rugby World Cup 2011 and emblazoning its cover with the official International Rugby Board's crest is also quite misleading - aside from lacking the official licenses for the Australian and Kiwi teams, there's also no real players or strips from Japan, Fiji, Russia and more. In fact, all told the game only features 10 licensed teams out of the 20 competing at the World Cup - precisely half the real thing - with the 10 unlicensed teams made up of generic players with made up names."
Personal highlights for me
If you want to play this, why not try and track down a version of the old Rugby 08 second hand? It would be much cheaper.

I bet Lomu's rugby challenge is going to be a let down too, it seems great all the teams and career modes ,competitions etc but the general gist is that the gameplay is a bit lacking due to no set plays and it seems its got a get it to the winger and he will score everytime get out play /glitch

It couldn't be worse than the RWC game play.

Quite realistic for the Dragons then. Tidy.

Yes it was good for it's time but all you had to do was get the ball to the winger
and he would score everytime , it was the same for rugby challenge 2006 on the ps2 , I really do hope the new rugby challenge is good . Ive been waiting for a new rugby game for years and it was the only reason I got an xbox 360 on release as EA announced rugby 2009 then they cancelled it .
I'll get both anyway , won't be able to resist

perand - I have pre-ordered RWC and will buy Lomu too just because who knows when another rugby game will come out. Also did a similar thing to you, bought a PS3 ready for FFXIII and then it wasn't released for a full year after I thought it was out.

Re: Ign review of Rugby World Cup 2011 xbox/ps3
I bought my Playstation over a year ago in anticipation for the next gen rugby game.. An in bloody typical fashion my Playstation broke this week.
But after playing that rugby 2011 demo and then playing 2008 on my PS2 afters... 2011 is a step backwards. In a nutshell, the 2011 is a lot slower and less exciting than 2008. My main gripe in the penalty advantage system is just wrong, if you ever kick the ball away(even if 50m) and the oppenent gets there first you go back to the original penalty.. when surely the advantage is well and truly over..
So to concur with everyone statements, Rugby challenge all the way.. it just cant be worse and from the gameplay footage it looks actually brilliant.

Played the demo and it's poor stadium graphics look immense, then the players come out and Flood looks like Ashton and they look very weird mould like PS1 even.
Poor game, and Shontayne Hape is wicked on it making it even more poor.

After all the waffle and points-scoring about exclusive official licenses and likenesses, I read on another forum that, in the RWC game, Stephen Ferris has a rating of 76. Oh, and he's black. Hope it's an elaborate wind-up.

He'd be Ireland's first black player so!

Not sure why the UK/Europe will be a lot longer than the other launch dates. You would think that Sidhe would want to hit Europe promptly because it will probably be the most lucrative market. France and England on their own are lucrative enough let alone the other countries!
Having no South African licences might dampen the enthusiasm there.

France and England are the biggest markets, I presume that the delayed release date is just a distribution thing as allot more game copies need to be made?
South Africans have a pretty rubbish deal I agree, every other major rugby playing nation will at least have true playing likeness regardless of whether they have the international licences or not. South Africans are just a bunch of made up players.

tomhughesnice true
The South Africans could use players from the likes of Saracens,Bath,Ulster and Racing Metro as the Rabo,AP and Top 14 licences have all been acquired by Sidhe.
It wouldn't be an amazing SA team but it would have the likes of Brits,Pienaar,Pretorius, Bakkies Botha and Steyn.
Could have John Smit as well.

Re: Ign review of Rugby World Cup 2011 xbox/ps3
Received my copy this morning (don't have a clue how), not impressed at all, only options are RWC, international friendlies and warm up tours.
Bad points -
. Bad graphics
. Limited modes
. no tutorial
. no player creator
. basic line out options
. unrealistic offloads
. only a few licensed teams
Good points -
. player editor (attributes, name)
Cant think of any more at the minute, will get back to you!
4/10

If that's true... I mean, they have the license to use Irelands player likenesses! What possible reason could there be for that?

Cheers for the review.
I was gonna pick this game up today purely for the online games. But having read the review and played the demo, I'll wait another 2 weeks.
Rugby challenger had better be worth the wait.

Amazon still haven't got rugby challenge on there site.
Game say it's being released on 9th September.
I'm glad that it's being released in NZ and aid, so we can check out their reviews.
I hope they're not both a big let-down, or it'll be back to madden and FIFA.

I'll wait a fortnight after reading the review. Are you sure it's the 8th? That's a thursday and games tend to be released on a Friday.

Re: Ign review of Rugby World Cup 2011 xbox/ps3
The worrying thing about Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge is not the content/longevity. There seems to be lots of modes, teams etc.
It's the gameplay. Is it true there are no set plays? Will it be good enough I wonder.
It is no surprise rugby world cup 2011 game is a disaster. It seems like a rushed project with little thought put into the gameplay, content etc.
Being called the official rugby world cup 2011 game but not having the hosts New Zealand is a huge flaw.
The gameplay is arguably the most important aspect. Will Jonah Lomu challenge nail this?

Waited 4 years for a new rugby game and I can't believe I'm not buying the first one that's been released.
Gonna play on the old classic lomu tonight.
Is it worth getting RWC 11, just to play online for a couple of weeks?

The trick with Love film is that if you really want something, only put that one game in your rental list.
