If Worcester stay up this will be against all expectations at the start of the season. Curiously they have already lost 9 matches yet still have a good chance of avoiding relegation....

Re: county relegation
Hi Wheelchair - good to hear from a Worcs supporter. I think it's fair to say that Worcs have benefited from an unexpectedly weak season from Yorks, but nonetheless its good to see that a team written off by almost everyone may stay up or at least come close.
When Surrey re-signed Batty from Worcs most Surrey supporters that I am aware of - including me - thought we had made a bad decision, and I think Worcs supporters were happy to see him go. But this season at least he has not actually done too badly and I think there is at least a grudging admiration that he keeps plugging away.....

Wheelchair / Corporal - for what little it's worth, I think I can already hear the first bars of The Great Escape being played for Worcs.
I've seen Batty play a few times this season and agree with the Corporal about him. I'm certainly not going to use Chris Adams' ghastly expression ''good in the dressing room'' [usually dolled out by our manager to justify a costly and terrible signing] but to Batty's credit he is certainly a team man. He's constantly encouraging in the field, shining the ball for the seamers, giving or collecting seamers' jumpers to or from the umpire every over and generally supportive in every way he can be of his colleagues. He still hasn't fully convinced me as a player but, perhaps more difficult, has won some respect.

Re: county relegation
Everyone expected Yorks to have a bad season last time round, and they did better than expected. But this time around they just didn't get going. They have a good core of good players, Lyth, Bairstow, Adil Rashid, of course Tim Bresnan and Ajmal Shahzad and Ryan Sidebottom. Somehow they didn't click as a unit, but I hope they stay up.
Yorks are my favorit side in English county cricket!.

Re: county relegation
Remarkable that after their excellent win today Worcs are up to 6th.
Hants look certain to beat Somerset heavily with help of another massive record breaking partnership - but too late. What on earth were they doing earlier in the season Return of Carbery to form has perhaps made the difference.
Yorks on the precipice - they have to beat Warks - which not looking likely.... So it's odds on Yorks and Hants for the chop.

It's possible Yorks could win tomorrow which would keep the issue open for a bit longer....

Corporal, we have some really good players like ADams, Mcknzie, Vince, Briggs, Dimi
Just got off to a bad start and got stuck in a rut

I'd written off Hants chances - But Worcs look odds on to lose and maybe not get more than one batting point. Lancs will be desperate to win - so if Hant don't concede too large a lead it could be that Lancs set a target that dangles a bit of a carrot for Hants.....
So, all to play for, Jimbo .

Re: county relegation
There is something seriously wrong at Yorkshire if they end up going down this season, and it looks very likely that they will. On paper they are too good to go down, but cricket isn't played on paper.
Players like Rashid, Lyth and Shazhad, all England contenders (2 with caps) have regressed so badly that 2 of them have been left out of the team at various points of the season? Rashid rarely gets a bowl before the 50th over of an innings, Lyth has no FC century this season and Shazhad is getting lumped to all parts of the ground, especially earlier in the season.
Then there's are young hopefuls, which there are plenty which you'd expect given that we are one of the larger counties geographically. Why have none of Ashraf, Hannon-Dalby, Wainwright and Rafiq progressed from their debuts? They are all in and around the same stage they were at 1/2 years ago.
And most of all, whoever made the decision to not replace Jacques Rudolph with an overseas batsman needs chopped immediately. Every man and his dog knew his runs needed replacing. Our batting line-up was too inexperienced (bar the waning McGrath) to make up the difference. That decision has probably cost us first division cricket.
Questions that need answering, and maybe a new approach needed.

Even if Yorkshire win against Somerset it's still gonna take an absolute miracle to keep us up. Shambles.

Re: county relegation
Yorks' relegation pretty much guaranteed since Worcs are only 1 point behind with a game remaining. But it is still possible for Hants to make a remarkable escape if they win and Worcs don't win - and especially if they lose....

cricketfan, Carberry has made a few impressive scores but he also gets alot of low scores. Dont think this was the main reason for us struggling

Well Jimbo and CF - at least Hammers are doing OK!
I fear from Hants point of view that Warks will be up for that match. Fair chance that Durham will beat Worcs - which will give Hants a chance to win and stay up if they are good enough .

I have no idea why Carberry was in the slips
We need some early wickets, we seem to be going down without a fight. Except for Dimi who is bowling superbly

Well, Goochie, not only a game show host in ''Richard'' Whiteley but an assistant as well at the wicket - ''Anthea'' Redfern!
Come on, Pepe. ''Give us a twirl!''
Sorry, folks - brilliant comment but on the wrong thread!

Re: county relegation
Jimbo - really interesting. You might have a chance after all.
Hants now need 30 to avoid the follow on with 2 wickets left. If you manage that, Warks will need to declare tomorrow and set you a target. That'll then be their only way of winning but it could open the door to you.
The Bears have really mucked this up ....

Worcs will probably lose tomorrow, making it 11 losses out of 16 - and still stay up!
Were Yorks and Hants that bad Or is there something slightly odd about the points system. Basically you can lose as many games as you like providing you win a few.....?

Re: county relegation
Definitely seems better to win and lose lots than draw them all which is good really imo as it will lead to more 'cricket wickets' and a bit more urgency from captains (although I am not a fan of 'forced results' with set targets etc.). It only falls down on screwing the teams over who have the worst luck with the weather! Gutted about Hampshire going down tbh, having spent 3 years living in Southampton I have a bit of a soft spot for them.
