World Cup, whose your favourite? Empty World Cup, whose your favourite?

Post by hodge Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:41 pm

Pretty much what the title says who would you back to win the world cup?

Australia - very good record when it comes to world cups despite strength of current aussie side
India - Home advantage? although lack of a god may be trouble for them if he doesnt recover
England - 20/20 champions, remainder of one day series could be key. Will Prior click at the top of the order, will Swann be able to just get back into the swing of things.
Sri Lanka - sub continent advantage, Murali and Mendis could be key in the tournament

odds according to Stan James:

India - 3/1
Sri Lanka - 9/2
Australia - 5/1
South Africa - 5/1
England - 5/1
Pakistan - 15/2
West Indies - 16/1
New Zealand - 16/1
Bangladesh - 40/1
Zimbabwe - 125/1
Ireland - 300/1
Holland - 1000/1
Canada - 1000/1
Kenya - 1000/1

Decent odds on the dark horses New Zealand i would think Vettori could be a big player in the tournament and Jesse Ryder could have a field day i reckon.

World Cup, whose your favourite? Empty The winners of the World Cup will be.....

The winner of this World Cup will be the team who manages to win 3 games in a row. That could be; India, Australia, Sri Lanka, South Africa, England, New Zealand or the West Indies. I doubt very much that it will be any of the others.

I think Sri Lanka will win it.Sub-Continent advantage and some top class batsman should see them through, along with a bowling attack of Murali,Mendis and Malinga.

Hope Ireland can do well, Porterfield and Rankin went to my school. Cricket is quite big round my end come the summertime.

I'd go along with the bookie's odds here.

England have a very good chance to break another record, whilst after seeing some of the Pakistan v NZ match today - the Pakistanis showed how awesome they can be. Can they get through to the semis then reproduce that form?...that's the question.

A Sub Con team will win the world cup, as the conditions are ideal for them, the only other team challenging is the Aussies

I'm not sure Aus will perform too well in subcontinent conditions. I think it's a wide open tournament, with any of 8-9 teams in with a chance. The format lends itself to sides who peak later than sooner. Finishing top 4 in a group of 7 with sides like Canada and the Netherlands floating around should be no trouble for the big teams, and then it's just down to getting a run together come the knockout stage in the last eight. I'd have to back one of India, Sri Lanka or Pakistan to win the tournament, but with Aus, South Africa and England capable of good cricket, and dark horses like New Zealand and West Indies in the mix, not too many will correctly pick the winner. Still too long an event at 37 days though.
