Golf balls
Ok, been done a fair bit on the old forum but can't remember the response, and as it's a new forum it seems fine to go again with some of the traditional questions.
So, I play off 15 but want to get it down this year. Think i have a fast swing, and on occasion slice it right. Short game needs improving and i don't think i get much check on my short shots (although i'm trying to change setup for these shots). Any thoughts about what mid to top end ball I should try for the season?

Re: Golf balls
You would be best getting a ball fitting done and I know it sounds dodgy, but trust me it works. I finished up being reccomended a ball I would never use, but the results speak for themselves. If you have a fast swing then you'll probably need a Bridgestone Tour B330RX. I go longer. straighter and am able to achieve backspin now.
The fitting showed that the ball I always used had a fade and I had more spin that ballooned the ball especially in wind. Amazing to see the results on screen against a a number of other top brands. The guy said check these out on screen and tell me which one got you the best results. It didn't feel like it whilst I was hitting, but the results were there, so I gave them a whirl and was able to knock a couple of shots off.

Srixon Z-Star £20 at the moment - comparable in quality with a Pro V1....

Re: Golf balls
I have heard a few people mention golf ball fittings. Can someone elaborate on what is involved and also provide any info on where they can be done? I am in Edinburgh area if that helps.

There are plenty of places around who do this now and even though the kit is sponsored by all the top brand suppliers, the bloke doing it will show you the best ball for your game irrespective of brand because he'll show you side by side results and they can't lie 8)

I got the best deal ever on the srixon z star. I was playing in the states having hired clubs and needed some balls. A pro shop was selling them of for $4 per 3 ball sleeve.

Re: Golf balls
Srixon Z Star have to say I think is a fantastic ball, for years played the Pro V1, but made the change to this last year after my gear all got pinched and our pro doesn't stock titleist as he is a Srixon staff player and found the ball to suit my game far better as I was getting way to hig a spin rate with the Prov

First up define fast.
If you have a quick tempo that doesn't mean that you're generating a high impact speed. And why do you need check on your short shots? Most people don't get up to the flag in the first place so all check does is leave them even further away!
Look at what your game needs first... And then build around that to the right ball.
(agree with Mave by the way. ProV1 is way too spinny. Bridgestone B330 Tour for me.)
