Tony Kanaan escapes massive crash Empty Tony Kanaan escapes massive crash

Tony Kanaan has escaped unhurt from a huge accident during this morning's IndyCar warm-up session at the Baltimore street circuit.

The Brazilian suffered a brake failure on the approach to the first corner and was launched over the top of Penske driver Helio Castroneves. Kanaan's car then clipped the outside concrete wall before flying through the tyre barriers, clearing the entire run-off area before finally coming to a stop.

Castroneves immediately rushed over to Kanaan's car, but he was able to climb out of the KV Racing Technology entry unassisted.

"I had a brake failure," Kanaan said. "It's lucky that I hit Helio, because if I hadn't then I would have been hurt. It was definitely not fun. Helio saved my life today. A brake failure in a racecar is just something that should not happen."

Castroneves said that he had no idea that Kanaan was in trouble until he felt the impact.

"I just saw the undertray of a car, and realised it was him," he said. "He really flew, and I was really worried about him. When I looked he didn't move it all so I ran over to make sure he was okay. It was a very scary accident, but I'm glad he's okay. I'm glad I was there to soften the crash for him, because it could have been really bad."
