Big blow for Eng. How is the depth looking in that position?

Big piece of fortune for Australia. I'd have backed England with Sheridan to do a number on them in the semis. He really loves playing the Aussies.

Re: Andrew Sheridan out of World Cup
In my opinion he was rushed back too soon after his surgery,
Sad to see him take no further part due to injury,,,,
Did Stevens replace him because he was injured ? I thought it was just the last quarter tactical change.

Cover is fine, though the props left are a bit weighted to the tight head.
Saying that the England scrum has improved in each of teh matches so far (incl warmups) when Stevens has replaced Sheridan.
It is a real shame for Andrew Sheridan - but perhaps good news for England, as even at his best he was over-rated.
We may now see an extra 3/4 drafted into the squad.

5 props was probably too many in the squad anyway - I was surprised when the squad came out. Maybe no-one remembered to tell MJ that the RWC was doing 7-man benches not 8
A shame for Sheridan though, and as you say the remaining props are biased towards the tighthead side.

Re: Andrew Sheridan out of World Cup
cover is fine, Corbisiero was excellent during the 6N, and Stevens has done well when he has come on in the last few games. A year or so ago I'd have hated hearing this as it would have meant Tim Payne was going to start, but now, not that fussed TBH

Shame for Sheridan, I thought he had been putting in some good shows recently. England have enough cover there that they won't suffer.

Re: Andrew Sheridan out of World Cup
Agree with most of the above posts. A real shame for him, but we won't miss him as much as we would at one time. Happy with Corbs and Stevens there.
Sheridan really doesn't have much luck. He just seems to be one of those guys who gets injured. Though I guess there are recurring injuries, especially in his position, and you're never likely to be 100% again. Maybe there's also the argument that he's just too big/developed and puts extra stress on his body.
Hope he recovers as soon as possible.

Extremely bad news for England as he is, at his best, a world class performer. Having been out for so long he needed some games under his belt to regain some form, which he was slowly doing. Yes we have some good cover but there is no way that Corbs is in Sheridan's class. I would now prefer Stevens to start at loosehead.

Re: Andrew Sheridan out of World Cup
It's a blow for Sheridan, but I don't think 5 props was ever the right decision. We could do with another back, preferably a 12.
Re: Andrew Sheridan out of World Cup
Big loss for England. Corbs is nowhere bear as good in either the tight or loose and was quite average in the 6N. Wilson and Stevens can both cover there. Payne, Mullan and Golding could be called up and are all natural looseheads where as PDJ could cover.
No chance of Marler coming out though as the idiot has picked up another ban.
Can't see Johno calling up another openside though.

Cymroglan, that was my thought exactly. Just watching him run made me think he was not quite recovered and was simply not ready. He never looked quite right. Shame.Cymroglan wrote:In my opinion he was rushed back too soon after his surgery,

Any word who the injury replacement will be yet? Front row, back row?
If not a front row, who do you all think would be next in line? Marler was pushed around by Saints last weekend.

Marker has just got himself a three week ban for throwing punches (again). Hopefully even the possibility that he might have done himself out of a trip to NZ helps him sort his act out.

I think Fourie would be an option to be called out. He looked sharp when he started against Ireland & I think he is not far off full fitness.

This year so far he's had a back injury, calf injury, right shoulder injury and now a left shoulder injury. Too big for his frame?

Plenty of cover at prop but it's very early days. Far worse than loosing Lawes for a couple of games. I wonder if Sheridan was ever really fit?

Re: Andrew Sheridan out of World Cup
Props are always injury prone, and that was a very demanding game on them even wth relativly few scrums.
Its no suprise one has been injured, and no shock they took 5 ....look at th pool they rae in, every side is going to arm wrestle England, they need to manage thir resources there and try and keep guys fresh. The backs have barely done any work as usual, theeres plnty of cover there with flexible players.
Tough on Sheridan.
Doctor Gry...did you see him run when he was at his prime? He always looked like hed just ben raped by a moose.

This is what happens when you rush people back. He's hardly played any rugby this year with shoulder, back, and calf problems. People need time to get match fit, especially in the front row.

Re: Andrew Sheridan out of World Cup
I feel sorry for the guy. The now typical amount of hype that came out of England when he first appeared was typically galling "the best prop the world has ever seen" (of course...) and it was easy to dislike him.
But he seems like a nice bloke who really enjoys his rugby.
It's always a shame when someone fights their way back from injury and then suffers a similar one. Seems like he's never had an opportunity to realise his potential.

Re: Andrew Sheridan out of World Cup
Feel bad for Big Ted, he was looking to regain the form of 2005(Lions) and 2007(RWC). But has been riddled with shoulder injuries.
Luckily Matt Stevens and Alex Corbisiero have been looking good. Matt has been the stand out prop in the Prem since his return and Corbs was brilliant in the 6 nations looking good against on Castro and Mas in olny his first two tests.

Yep - luckily you have an almost endless line of foreign imports to prop up your props.

S'truth, mate! I think you just insulted the moose population.Peter Seabiscuit Wheeler wrote:Props are always injury prone, and that was a very demanding game on them even wth relativly few scrums.

I think Sheridan has been rushed back multiple times, and the injuries - especially at prop - add up quickly. Or better put, the injuries multiply. Yeah, bad luck for the big guy. I hope this is not the end for him. Hope he takes the proper time to recover.

Re: Andrew Sheridan out of World Cup
You never want to see any player get injured and miss out of events such as this.
But IMO I still don't think he has ever reached his early potential, he gained his rep after destroying, what was at the time a poor Aussies scrum.
I don't think he ever reached his full potential around the field (which is a bonus I know) but someone of his bulk and size could or should be devastating.
I admit he has been looking good in recent games but once a prop starts picking up shoulder injuries as often as he has then its not good.
