Bill Haas yesterday, what a shot! For those who missed it:

Oh and it helped that i had him to win at 40/1

Re: One of the best shots ever?
I think the big thing, jimbo, is that Haas had the balls to hit it.
As soon as the commentators saw the lie they stressed the only real problem was the height of the bank, estimated at about ten feet.
Execution was, as BBC journos love to say, sublime.

I watched it pretty much as a neutral but after that shot, I was really rooting for Billy boy Haas. Great entertainment and executed 'sublimely'

Incredible shot.
He showed no fear and executed it perfectly. It was however no doubt helped by it being all or nothing for him. There was no decision to be made. He had to hit it and I suspect this helped him commit. Still incredible stuff to pull it off. How do you get spin out of water??

Was a brilliant shot, couldnt believe it when he pulled it off. Thought it went backwards after he hit it

Took some big balls to play that shot, and played it fantastically. A shot of a champion.
Not sure how he got the spin on the ball considering the amout of water he would have had between the blade and ball at impact,

Ah. I'd heard about it but hadn't seen it. Good shot though it was, it was basically a bunker shot and they're all good at that. Some shot given the situation for sure, but I thought (from all the talk I'd heard) that we were talking about a ball which was actually below the surface - that would have been some shot.
Wonder what club he used? Flange and high bounce would have made it hard but a low bounce lob wedge would have cut through the water as if it (more or less) wasn't there.

Re: One of the best shots ever?
I'm with NBS on this one.
I played a very similar shot once at one of the Portsmouth courses on the second hole of a championship. Everyone told me what a great shot it was but it was just a basic bunker shot.
Mind you my powder blue slacks and pink polo shirt were in a bit of a mess for the next 34 holes. Shoes and socks were OK as I had taken them off.
PS I won.

Doon, so are you saying Haas's shot wasn't one of the all time special shots or are you saying you've played an all time special shot too?

Re: One of the best shots ever?
The shot I played was probably a bit tougher than that of Haas, the bank was about 6' but the ball was closer to it and the ball was fully submerged in the water. I hit it to about 10' from the flag and missed the bloomin putt.
Good shot by Haas but as NBS said it was a standard bunker shot.
My shot was probably one of the best recovery shots I have hit. To take that chance at the second hole of a 36 hole event was a real gamble.
I find it hard to believe that some of the young thrusters on here have not played shots like that.

Re: One of the best shots ever?
I would imagine many club golfers have played that shot out of flooded winter bunkers. Easy to get spin off wet sand.

Maybe. I think I could play it reasonably competently but in that situation? To get it that close? Maybe 1 in 5? I'm a pretty decent bunker player in general.
I don't argue it was a good shot, but one of the best ever? IMO, I don't think it really contends.
