New zealand vs Canada match thread.
Canada started with a penalty and New zealand answers with a try from a beautiful forward pass.

Slade started poorly with a charged down kick in NZ 22. but then he makes up for it with a great line break and a well struck conversion from the touch line.

There is plenty of space out wide for the all Blacks to exploit. Kaino is looking immense

Re: New zealand vs Canada match thread.
Can someone please explain the crazy line-out put-in by the Canadian "quarter-back"? I can't believe for a minute that the ref and assistant refs all missed it; is there some archaic rule that explains it?

The All Blacks are so smart at the breakdown, they make it look as if they are counter rucking, but in reality they are walking around the ruck like you would wheel a scrum.

Great offload by Guildford to put Dagg over in the right hand corner.

The Canadians are making the tackles but the all Blacks are so slick, there is always a support runner to take the offload.

The tighthead prop (a former Canadian football quarter-back) stepped up and threw a very very curved ball (one handed) over the top of the line-out and into one of the Canadian centres in the middle of the pitch, about five yards behind the line-out. Very strange.

Bad luck for canada, kick through by cowan, the canadian 14 actually outruns Cowan, bur misses the ball and Guildford has an easy score.
Slade misses another one. 2/5

90 meter try for NZ, Muliaina scores from a quick tap penalty by cowan.
Cowan looks sharp. slade gets the conversion. 3/6

Re: New zealand vs Canada match thread.
forward pass spotted at last by NZ, canada scrum just outside the all Black 22. although that pass was not that much forward.
Canada on attack from the scrum 5 meters out, gets a penalty.

It was clearly illegal for at least 3 different reasons as far as I can tell??? Bizarre. Surely not another referee howler at the RWC?? hold the papers...

Re: New zealand vs Canada match thread.
Brave decision, kicking for a line out. 5 meters out. knock on at the lineout by All blacks, scrum to canada, but they are struggling at scrum time.
tighthead by NZ, kicks the ball out on their 10 meter.

Canada on the attack again, but sadly their execution lets them down every time, this time they get a penalty, thrid penalty against NZ in the red zone.
Perhaps something that can be exploited by other teams?

Re: New zealand vs Canada match thread.
Well Biltong I failed to defend it in front of panel on the basis that it is not adding any new information to the field.
Apparently the referees already know they are incompetent, but frankly enjoy running around in shorts shouting at 30 larger grown men blowing a whistle and alientating themselves from the worlds population. The laws are just a pretext to justify it.

Fantastic try by canada, at last they break the line, they simply went wide and crashed over, no overlap just straight through.
Well done, halftime coming up. kick to come

Re: New zealand vs Canada match thread.
Fact is, the conditions look blustery out there. Not sure Slade's 3/7 is all about his technique.
It's not like DC has never had a kick charged down, or made a handling error.
Slade's doing a good job. It's easy to criticise every single mistake a player makes, especially in a key position like 10. But not every mistake is "nerves".

Slade needs to learn to be patient when he's made the half break.

After watching the Canadian 9 feed their rapidly retreating scrum under the feet of the no. 8 all afternoon, if any referee in the rest of the tournament dares to penalise a crooked feed they will in one facet have proven their utter inconsistency.

No arms headbutt in the tackle from Kleeburger on Woodcock. Disgusting stuff and worrying signs for Woodcock as he appears concussed.

Only saw the second half but from what i seen it was men against boys.
NZ confortable winners in the end, but a big headache for Graham Henry, who to play at 10?

Re: New zealand vs Canada match thread.
Very hard to reach conclusions from this match,Canada are not rubbish they beat Tonga, drew with Japan, and gave France problems.
Even without the turnaround problem they`d have struggled players rubbished put there hands up.Guildford,Vito,Slade [until Weepu came on].
Slade does`nt know if he is the starting 10 still, after Graham Henry said
of the media encourage him.
Then replaces him with Weepu, they know what he can do why not givehim the full 80?.
Cowan`s service was rubbish Weepu or Ellis start with Slade/Crudon outside backs coming out your ears.
Slade apart from a half charged kick[and even DC had them]and goal kicking conditions were difficult.
Weepu played for the Hurricanes so knows the conditions.
The first half was good structured stuff, second half in very poor conditions
lost shape.
Forwards at set pieces looked good, restarts in tricky conditions second half were very iffy.
Muliana went well ,as did Read,Dagg,Slade, Woodcock all took knocks.
If given a decent service Slade is more than capable, but I suspect they will go with Weepu.
Which leaves just Ellis at 9,Cowan today was abysmal ,it`s a case of getting all theTop row players available starting for semi if they get there.

Re: New zealand vs Canada match thread.
Back from the match. Was a typical ab rout. Many silly passes put to ground but the weather was a bit yuck.
Kaino was tops and good to see guilford enjoying himself again. And mils. Slade was up and down and weepu seemed to offer a bit more smarts at 10 and a smarter goalkicking style- flatter and faster through the wonky winds.
Not much you can take from the match with the result over early.
Alan slades coming off was precautionary. Was favouring a leg.

Re: New zealand vs Canada match thread.
Apart from the early half charge Taylorman, and goalkicking Slade went well.[In the circumstances].Weepu knows the kicking conditions well if I
were
Henry start Weepu at scrum half,Slade at FH,get Dagg doing extensive goal kicking practice.
That was the combo Henry went with in 2010 3Ns when Carter was injured v final Aus match.
As forCowan they should have had the bum off the moment he started making skyscraper passes to 15 foot players.

Re: New zealand vs Canada match thread.
I think I'd stick with Slade. My feeling is he'll improve quickly if given the opportunity and is ultimately a better 1st 5 than either Cruden or Weepu (I'm a lions and huricanes fan BTW). I think he's been rushed a bit quickly, having missed most of the year through injury. A game against Argentina should seem him gain confidence. My understanding is that he needs to simplfy it at this level until he gets used to the pace of the game (that's GH's comment anyway).
