Re: Best 10 Fielders In Cricket History
Thinking of fielders, one guy who deserves a mention (although less well-known) is Brendan Julian, who played a handful of games for Australia in the early and mid 90s. Terrific fielder, and actually slightly frustrating cricketer who should have achieved far more. Slightly a victim of his times, had he been around today he would certainly be a permanent fixture in the one-day side, with his stylish lower middle-order batting and left-arm brisk medium-pace swing bowling making him an ideal number 7. He was around at a time when teams picked were more specialists, and basically your test side was your one-day side.
Talking about awful fielders, Malcolm was a lot worse than Tufnell (the latter pulled off a few good catches at least) although he had a great arm. If we're talking relative terms, a few current indians would be close to making the list. Danish Kaneria is/was also a terrible fielder.
One area which hasn't improved much (if at all) in cricket is slip catching: I often wonder why that is? Possible answers include: there's not much to improve, slip catching is much harder today (bowlers are quicker and ball comes quicker off the heavier bats), slip catching is less practiced (certainly in matches, since there are fewer slips usually), etc...
