Will Nadal break Brian Gottfried's record?
Brian Gottfried lost 10 finals in 1977 which is the record for finals lost in a year in the open era.
If Nadal were to lose the final of Shanghai to Murray, the final of Paris and the final of the WTF to Djokovic and then lose the final of the Davis Cup to Argentina, he would establish a new record of 11 finals lost in year.

Maybe he should start tanking matches when he's on the verge of meeting Nole.

That ain't gonna happen. Nadal has lost several finals this year but he ain't gonna lose anymore because he first have to make these finals which is not going to be easy considering his current form.

Gottfried also won 5 finals in 1977 - 15 finals in one year! (Plus 5 doubles victories and 5 doubles finals - that's 25 finals altogether)
He never made more than 5 singles finals in any other year.

Every single player in ATP circuit can and does dream about reaching every final and even winning it, why only 11. And why wouldn't they dream? But converting that dream into reality is another thing of course.

I don't like the thrust of this OP, but taking it at face value the DC does not count and if Paris plays anything like last year I don't fancy Nadal's chances much. A rested Fed may have his eye on Paris this year for lots of reasons - his tally of one minor win this year is poor by his standards, he needs points to make sure he's in the top 4 for next year, he has a poor record in Paris, and he should try to take advantage of a surface that is likely to help him against his main rivals.
Nadal needs to be careful, if he drags his seemingly exhausted body through another 15 singles matches on hc this year as well as the DC that will probably not do him any good.
